Entre el Valle de Sajambre y Valdeón / The other side of the Picos

As a holiday treat I went a little farther afield than usual,  to the S-W part of the Picos, in order to go up Pico Jario. We parked in the little village of Soto de Sajambre and followed the signposts up to Vegabaño. Peña Beza overlooks the first part of the walk.

Torre Santa de Castilla (the highest peak in the western part of the Picos) in the distance - I think it is anyway!

Después de una hora llegamos a Vegabaño.
After an hour walking up through beech woodland we got to Vegabaño.

I asked for information about my planned return route at the refuge. The mountain in the centre is the Torre Santa de Castilla.

The walk continued behind the refuge and was signposted to the right up through the woods.

When we came out of the woods I wasn't sure whether Jario was to the right of the col...

....or to the left, but when I got there it would become clear that it was the latter.

As we carried on up, Vegabaño came into view down below.

This was the view towards the south that awaited us on reaching the col

First we walked across to the right and from the Pico Neón (the ridge I had previously confused with Jario) we could see Soto de Sajambre and the carpark almost 3000 feet below

Pico Jario was another 100 metres up, on the other side of the col

¡En qué sitios pacen algunas!
What a nice spot for a graze!

From Jario:

Torre Santa de Castilla stands out to the north. This photo also gives an idea of how much woodland there is in the area.

Continuing towards the NE

la vista hacia el este
and to the east

In the foreground are the Picos de Valdelafuente, the most prominent one being Pica Samaya. That's where I planned to wend my way after tarrying awhile at the summit.

On the way there, looking back at Jario from the east. You can make out the path down on the right hand side of the mountain.

There didn't seem to be a clear path down so I crossed over to the south side

Here the going was easier as I headed down to the path

A couple of cairns as we approached Pica Samaya

We made the summit by walking up diagonally, which Monty didn't appreciate due to the large rocks. Anyway, this is the view back towards Jario and the intervening outcrops

Looking down towards the Collado Viejo, which lies at the foot of Peña Blanca (in the foreground) and Peña de Dobres beyond.

The Vegas de Dobres in the foreground with Llambrión in the distance; in the centre la Torre del Freire on the left and Torre de Salinas on the right.

We then went straight down to the north, and then diagonally across to the east through the heather and rocks before joining the path that comes down from the Collado Viejo (centre-right).

The path heads north then goes down to the right. You have to get to the Puerto de Dobres, right in the middle of the photo

As the path veers down to the right you go past this signpost

Behind are Pica Samaya (right) and Peña Blanca to its left

Although the path peters out as you near the wood, you have to keep going downhill till you meet the path the crosses the woods and follow it to the left. You don't have to go  as far as the Puerto de Dobres, but in any case, there are a couple of large cairns that show where the path leads into the wood.

There are lots of cairns along the way. From time to time you come out into the open.

The first part is pretty level, but later you start to go downhill. Peña Beza appears between the trees now and again.

this was just about the only stream along the way that hadn't dried up

Up to the left are the Picos de Valdelafuente

After a bit more than half an hour the path comes out onto a track which we followed down to the right. To the left it leads up to Jario

We soon got to Vegabaño, and walked down to Soto rather more directly than before, by taking a path that cut out the bends. Not long afterwards we came to the meadows near the village.

Altogether it was a 7-hour walk including the stops. A nice change of scenery from the eastern and western massifs that I'm more familiar with.
