Valle de Mena/ N-E Burgos

Llevaba tiempo con ganas de conocer el Valle de Mena en las Merindades de Burgos. Por fin el domingo pasado disfrutamos de un día  - bueno, una mañana - sin lluvia, así que no lo dudé.

Last Sunday we actually had a day (OK a morning!) of decent weather, so I took advantage to visit a place I'd had on my list for a long time - The Mena Valley in the neighbouring province of Burgos.

Quizás la aldea donde empecé a caminar no sea el sitio más fácil de encontrar. Fui por Los Tornos; y ya en la provincia de Burgos, en una rotonda cerca de Bercedo cogí la carretera dirección Valmaseda para bajar por el puerto del Cabrío. Al pie del mismo sigues las señales a Lezana, donde te da la bienvenida esta torre bonita con la Cresta de Mena de colofón. Luego a seguir por Sopeñano hasta Siones. Al llegar allí coges a la izq en el cruce para girar casi en seguida a la dcha, dirección El Vigo.

A la entrada de la aldea hay un paso por debajo de las vías de la FEVE y por alli comenzamos a andar todo recto en ligera subida por un bosquecillo hasta ver la Cresta de Mena delante. Se sigue por una senda unos metros a la izq de la alambrada hasta entrar en el bosque, y poco después giramos a la dcha, cruzando la valla para atravesar el bosque en diagonal en subida respetable hasta llegar a la base de las rocas.

The path we followed starts in a hamlet called El Vigo, and crosses the field in the photo before entering a beech wood. It then veers to the right and leads through the wood diagonally on the way up to the rocky crest.

As we made our way up through the wood there were occasional gaps between the trees that gave a glimpse of the valley below

Llegamos al Portillo de Lérdano, y se extiende al otro lado el Valle de Losa
We reached the point where we could see over to the valley on the other side of the ridge.

Rápidamente se alcanza La Peña de Lérdano.
Esta es la vista hacia el este. Al fondo se intuye el Anboto en el País Vasco.
All that remains is a short climb to the Peña de Lérdano. From the summit this is the view towards the east, with the Anboto mountain in the Basque Country visible on the horizon

La bajada se hace rápidamente, aunque después de tanta lluvia la parte justo debajo del Portillo estaba un poco resbaladiza. Aquí acercándonos ya a El Vigo.
The descent doesn't take long. After so much rain there were a few slippery stretches on the way. This photo was taken looking back when we were out of the woods and nearing the starting point.

2 paseos por Líebana/2 short walks in Liébana

Carmen and I spent last weekend in Liébana and luckily enjoyed gorgeous weather after so much rain. Here are some photos from a couple of short walks we did.
Carmen y yo pasamos el fin de semana pasado en Liébana y disfrutamos de un tiempo soleado después de tanta lluvia. A continuación unas fotos sacadas en un par de paseos que hicimos.

The first starts in Brez and takes you to the Canal de las Arredondas.

The easily accessible Pico Aliago is a good vantage point for stunning views of the Agero, with La Jontaniella to the left
