La Cubada Grande

For the 3rd time this year setting out from the province of Burgos for a relatively short walk to try to get back to some sort of fitness after a two-month lay-off. This is the view from the starting point: on the left is La Maza, which I was to visit on the way down; to the right is Peña La Horadada.

Mi 3ª salida burgalesa de este año empezaba en Jarrutías, entre Las Estacas de Trueba y Lunada. Desde la parada de autobús se ve La Maza a la izquierda, por donde luego pasaría al bajar de La Cubada Grande. A la derecha está la Peña La Horadada. 

The first part of the walk follows this track skirting La Horadada to the right along a gorge.
Al cruzar el río coges la pista a la derecha que entra en el Barranco del Curro a la dcha de La Horadada.

When you get to a stone hut, the track comes to an end and thereafter it's a case of finding the best way forward. At the end of the valley you make your way up to the right before doubling back to reach the top of the Cubada Pequeña (here seen on the right), descending to the separation between that and its big brother opposite and finally making your way up the slope to the top of the Cubada Grande (hidden from view here).

Al llegar a la primera de 2 cabañas se acaba la pista. Se sigue hasta el final de valle y a partir de ahí hay que subir hacia la derecha antes de girar otra vez hacia la izquierda para alcanzar la parte alta de La Cubada Pequeña (aquí se ve en la parte dcha de la foto), para luego bajar al "Callejón" entre esa y la Cubada Grande justo enfrente. Lo que se ve a la izq. es la primera parte de la subida - no se ve la cima desde aquí.

When you start to double back to get to the top of the Cubada Pequeña, you can see clearly the valley below and the two stone huts.
Desde el sitio donde cambias de dirección para subir a la Cubada Pequeña se ve la última parte del recorrido hecho. Se ven claramente las dos cabañas en el valle.

Acercándonos a la parte alta de la Cubada Pequeña. Enfrente se ve su hermana grande. Bordeando la cima hacia la derecha se llega a una zona donde se puede bajar fácilmente a la separación entre las dos 
Cubadas.

From the point where the incline gets less pronounced you have your last view of La Cubada Pequeña
Mirando atrás desde el punto donde la subida empieza a ser menos pronunciada tenemos la última vista de la Cubada Pequeña, con la Colladía del Curro al otro lado

Looking in the other direction you discover that the summit is still quite a way off

And finally from the top the reward: Castro Valnera just opposite, with Los Dojos to the left, where they plan to put the station for the cable car coming up from Vega de Pas. A hare-brained scheme if ever there was one!
Y por fin la cima, y el premio que son las vistas de Castro Valnera enfrente y a la izquierda Los Dojos, donde piensan colocar la parte superior del teleférico de Vega de Pas. ¡Ojalá no lo lleguen a construir!

On the way down I stopped off at La Maza; from here you can see Los Dojos and Castro Valnera on the left and La Cubada Grande directly in front.

The most uncomfortable part of the walk was to come: lots of gorse and no paths - Monty was not amused!
Quedaba la parte más incomoda de la excursión: mucha aulaga y ausencia de senderos - ¡a Monty no le ha apetecido en lo más mínimo! 

We did eventually get onto a track that led us back to the car though and came back via Lunada, where I stopped to take this photo of the valley down to La Concha.

Al final alcanzamos una pista que nos llevaba a la carretera y volvimos por Lunada, donde paré para sacar esta foto mirando hacia La Concha.

To finish, a photo taken in 2010 from the Pico del Polluelo to the south. Behind La Maza, the long ridge of La Cubada Grande rising gently from right to left is clearly visible, with Castro Valnera to the left. 

Para acabar, una foto de 2010 desde el Pico del Polluelo al sur. Detrás de La Maza, la larga cresta de La Cubada Grande ganando altitud de derecha a izquierda se ve claramente, con Castro Valnera hacia la izquierda.
