Tolaco & Cumbrialucu

Volví a Lamasón para seguir explorando el Monte Arria. En Burió, barrio de Lafuente, sin cruzar el arroyo, subí por una pequeña plantación de eucaliptos. Al llegar a un prado crucé un muro para poder seguir un sendero hacia la izquierda.

I returned to Monte Arria in the west of Cantabria to further explore the rocky terrain. In Burió we followed a track up through a small plantation of eucalypti before traversing a stone wall and heading along a path to the left.

Un poco más adelante cogí este camino empedrado que sube hacia la derecha. El sendero continúa hacia el oeste, y bajé por él al final de la ruta.
A few hundred yards on I turned up this stony path to the right.

Pronto perdí el camino, pero se sube fácilmente en dirección al Collado Tolaco, a la derecha del Picu la Cueva
The path soon disappeared but it was easy to make my way up the hillside towards the Tolaco pass, to the right of Picu la Cueva (literally "Cave Peak").

Al rato el camino aparece otra vez, y se sigue sin pérdida hasta el collado.
A little later the path reappeared and zigzagged up to the pass. Warm work, eh Monty?

A medida que subimos van apareciéndose el Coriscao y los Picos. Más tarde bajaremos hacia las naves ganaderas que se ven al fondo.
 As we got higher, Coriscao (centre) and the Picos de Europa (right) came into view. We would later come down towards the farm buildings in the middle of the photo.

Llegamos al collado y al otro lado vemos las Rías de Tinamayor y Tinamenor
This is the view awaiting me from the pass, looking towards the sea, with the two estuaries that coincide with the border between Cantabria and Asturias.

Rodeamos el pico a la izquierda, subimos a una antecima, ya viendo la zona que exploraremos después
We went round the peak to the left, walking up to a point immediately below the summit. To the right, the area we would explore later on.

Subimos el Picu la Cueva desde el oeste, y vemos el Cueto el Castillo al otro lado del Collado Tolaco. Tiene exactamente la misma altura (1002 m) que el Picu.
We reached the top from the west side. On the other side of the Tolaco pass is the Cueto el Castillo, which we approached from the east in February.

Bajamos hacia el oeste y no tardamos en encontrar un sendero que recorre la cresta
We descended in that direction and soon found a path that follows the ridge

Al salir a una zona menos agreste me metí hacia el norte. Mirando hacia atrás: el Picu la Cueva
When we came out onto the other side of the ridge I changed direction and went towards the north. Looking back, Picu la Cueva.

Conecta el puerto de Arria con el lado sur

It links the Arria pasturelands with the villages to the south

El sendero se dirige hacia el oeste, pero lo dejamos un par de veces para coger otros que veía más abajo
The path goes westwards, but we left it a couple of times to follow others I saw lower down

En este punto cambiamos de dirección, y seguimos un sendero hacia el este

bordeamos una finca, y pasamos al lado de las naves vistas durante la subida
we walked alongside these pastures and passed the two cowsheds seen on the way up

Por eso se llama Picu la Cueva
This is why it's called Cave Peak

Entramos en la plantación de nuevo

y bajamos por la carretera hasta el cementerio de Lafuente, desde donde vemos la zona recorrida
and down the road towards Lafuente cemetery, where I took this photo of the area we covered on the walk.

A continuación cogimos una pista que sube hacia el este y pasamos por debajo de la Canal de Braña por donde bajamos en febrero.

We then went to see where a track heading up to the east would lead to and found ourselves below the  path we came down last time we were here.

El sendero sigue por la ladera antes de subir por encima de la Peña Lamasón; lo añadí a la lista de excursiones futuras, eché un último vistazo a Peña Sagra y bajamos al coche.
The path offers another way to get up to the ridge, which I noted for a future occasion. I took one last look at Peña Sagra and we returned to the car.
