Calseca años después / Calseca years later

Una de las primeras rutas que hice en Cantabria, hace más de 20 años, fue la subida a Porracolina desde Calseca. Volví al pueblo para hacer una variación sobre el mismo camino, y vi que el croquis que manejaba ya no servía: la carretera ya no acababa donde yo recordaba - seguía hasta un repetidor, y donde antes existía un sendero que significaba el comienzo de la ruta, ahora había otra carretera que acaba en Bustablado. 

Total, que perdí bastante tiempo buscando dónde empezar a andar, hasta que di con la opción de hacer la ruta al revés - un aliciente adicional sería descubrir donde acababa.

Pues a menos de un kilómetro desde el cruce con la carretera que sube a Valdició está el camino que cogí (ver foto). Un poco antes hay un lugar donde se puede dejar el coche, en frente de una bifurcación que baja a un albergue.

Returning to Calseca, a village which served as starting point to one of the first hikes I did in Cantabria, I found that new roads made it difficult for me to work out where I'd set off from before. So I decided to do the walk the other way round. The photo shows the starting point about half a mile from the turnoff from the road that goes up to Valdició near San Roque de Riomiera.

Porracolina

Pronto se deja el camino para coger un sendero que sube al lado del Arroyo de Calseca

Un poco más adelante cogí este ramal a la derecha en lugar de seguir de frente. Pasa por delante de una cabaña donde reanuda la dirección ESE de antes
A bit further on I took this fork to the right instead of carrying straight on. It leads to a hut then takes up the ESE direction again

Después de salir del valle fui subiendo por restos de sendero y praos. Una mirada hacia atrás

Continúo hacia el NE. El viento está muy fuerte pero empiezo la última parte de la subida a la cima

Y Santoña más al este. Luego bajaré por el sendero que va hacia la izquierda donde hay un collado. A la izquierda de este collado hay una pequeña subida a un alto donde experimentaré un viento huracanado

Empiezo a bajar casi en seguida de Porracolina debido a la fuerza del viento. Abajo se ve un grupo de cabañas con sus praos, por donde habrá que pasar
But it's already too strong for me to want to stay longer on the summit. Below there's a group of huts surrounded by meadows, which I'll be passing through later

El Mortero

Primero llego al pequeño Alto de la Porra de Hormigas. Aquí me cuesta mantenerme de pie por las rachas tan fuertes. Mi idea de seguir por las Peñas Gordas hasta el Mosquiteru no tiene sentido en estas condiciones
But first I follow the path to the col and then it's a real battle to get up the nearby hill - I can hardly stand upright due to the intense gusts. My original idea of following the Peñas Gordas as far as Mosquiteru is just not an option in these conditions

A medida que voy bajando veo que vamos a salir a la carretera que sube a Bustablado. Primero paso cerca de una cabaña rodeada de fresnos delante de un prao que se aprecia en la parte baja de esta foto
As I make my way down I realise I'm going to come out on a new road that leads to Bustablado. First I go past a hut surrounded by ash trees set at the edge of a meadow you can see at the bottom of this photo

Una vez en la carretera miro atrás a la cabaña y la senda que sube al Mortero.  Hasta aquí llegaba un sendero que venía de Calseca la última vez que andaba por aquí. Ahora solo hay que bajar la carretera, atajando una curva por un camino a la izq. antes de llegar al punto de salida.
Once on the road I look back at the hut and the path that goes up to the Mortero. I remember this place from the last time I was here. all that's left now is to follow the road down, taking a short cut down a path on the left and coming out on the road again just above the starting point.

Cascadas/Waterfalls

Leí hace poco que hemos pasado el mes de noviembre más lluvioso desde que se registra este tipo de datos. Parecía un momento propicio para dar un paseo con final en una cascada. Al ser corto podía acompañarme Carmen, además de Monty. Aparcamos en Bustriaguado, en Roiz y seguimos la pista que sale del final del pueblo.

Apparently we've had the wettest November on record in Cantabria since records began. It seemed like a good moment to do a walk ending at a waterfall. As this one was short, Carmen could come along, as well as Monty. We parked in Bustriaguado (Valdáliga) and followed the track that leads out of the end of the village.

En una curva hacia la izquierda dejamos la pista y continuamos de frente hacia la cabaña de la foto

Pronto llegamos a la cascada, que tiene un nombre muy extraño; por lo visto la rampa es natural.
We soon reach the waterfall; this is not a man-made ramp, according to a description I came across

Pero lo que más me gustó era la parte de arriba, donde ves como el agua desaparece de repente...

Al día siguiente, decidimos visitar otro salto de agua, mucho más conocido, que es la de Borleña, en el Valle de Toranzo. Nunca lo había visto, pero al investigar un poco descubrí que hay dos cataratas  no una.
La pista, convenientemente señalizada al "Churrón" se convierte en sendero. Había muchas personas, de todas las edades - ¡hasta una que traía un coche de bebé! aunque el barro en el camino le habrá impedido llegar muy lejos
The day after this walk, we decided to visit another, much better-known waterfall, near Borleña, on the way to the Escudo pass. I'd never seen it, but on researching a little I found there are actually two falls not one. A track signposted to the "Churrón" heads out of the village. There were lots of people of all ages, even someone pushing a pram (!), though I can't see how she made her way along the muddy path leading off the track...

Churrón de Borleña

Pero primero subimos un poco a la derecha para verlo de frente
But first we made our way up the bank to the right to take in the view from higher up

De vuelta, al poco de dejar el churrón crucé el arroyo en búsqueda del segundo salto. Éste no está señalizado y no vi a nadie mientras iba hacia él.
On the way back, just after leaving the fall behind I crossed the stream to look for the other waterfall. This one is not signposted, and I saw no-one once I had crossed over.

Arroyo de la Llana

A partir de ahi me alejé un poco del agua, trepando por las rocas y buscando la mejor manera de subir. Hay que mantenenerse en la misma margen izquierda del arroyo

Thereafter you have to move away from the water a bit and make your way up over the rocks, keeping on the same left-hand side of the stream

Al principio no se ve ni se oye nada, pero al rato se vislumbra entre los árboles
At first I didn't see or hear anything, but not long afterwards I saw it through the trees

Churrón del Castillo

Un churrón espectacular solo para mis ojos
For my eyes only

Cuando el tiempo se ponía menos oportuno para hacer senderismo en Cantabria, decidí probar suerte en el norte de Palencia, justo en el límite entre las dos provincias.
With the weather worsening in Cantabria, we headed to the north of Palencia for the final walk of the long weekend

A la salida de Revilla de Pomar hay un sendero señalizado a la izquierda que se dirige a Covalaguas.
Pasamos cerca de plantaciones de girasoles. No estoy acostumbrado a verlos en este estado.
Just opposite the church in Revilla de Pomar we follow a signposted path to Covalaguas. I'm used to seeing fields of sunflowers in the summer, but had never noticed how they look in winter:

Siguiendo unas balizas originales me dirigí un kilómetro por el páramo al SE
Following some original markers I walked a kilometre across the moor to the SE

Abajo se ve el Pozo de los Lobos. En siglos pasados los lugareños batían a los lobos para llevarlos entre los muros hacia un lugar desde donde no había escapatoria
Below is a wolf-trap. In centuries gone by the locals would chase wolves down the hill between the walls to a dead end.

Una ruta con final ventoso / High winds in Liébana

Hace 6 años hice esta misma ruta por la Canal del Valle y por lo tanto no voy a repetir las indicaciones que aparecen en la entrada de septiembre del 2013. Como la vez anterior, cuando vine solo,  nuestra idea de pasar la Paré Corvera y ascender al Alto de las Verdianas no se pudo realizar, en esta ocasión debido al fuerte viento, que nos obligó a dar la vuelta cuando habíamos llegado a la parte alta de la Canal.
Subo unas fotos de esta última salida.
I did this walk up the Canal del Valle six years ago, so I won't repeat the information in the Sept. 2013 post. As on the previous occasion, when I was on my own, our planned route up to the Alto de las Verdianas couldn't be completed, this time due to the strong wind, which forced us to go back the way we'd come when we got to the top of the valley.

En la parte alta de la canal se intuye un paso en la Paré Corvera (yendo hacia arriba en diagonal y hacia la der. desde el centro de la foto). Habrá que explorarlo otro día.
Near the top of the valley there's a likely looking way to get over the cliff (going up diagonally to the right from the middle of the picture). To be explored at a future date...
