Dulla (2)

Salimos de Quintanilla Valdebodres, un pueblo de las Merindades para explorar los barrancos que tanto nos impresionaron hace un par de años.

On the shortest day of the year we returned to Las Merindades in Burgos to further explore the ravines that made such an impression on us a couple of years ago.  This time we set off from Quintanilla Valdebodres.

Seguimos el GR-1, que se dirige al norte para luego girar hacia el oeste. El Canal de Muela (también Barranco de la Mata en algunos mapas, que puede llevar a la confusión, debido a que el canal principal de la zona, por el que volveríamos, recibe el mismo nombre) es el que queda más al norte del sistema. La primera parte discurre por terreno bastante llano,
We followed the marked route that heads north to begin with before curving round to the west, making it the northernmost of the five gorges around the Dulla. The first hour or so was fairly flat,

antes de que un sendero nos lleva por una colina que separa valles a ambos lados  

before the path took us up a hill separating depressions on either side

El sendero se convierte en pista que se dirige al collado de Arroya, en la parte más norteña del escarpe
and towards the Arroya pass on the northernmost part of the scarp

Dejamos la GR para alcanzar la zona más elevada hacia el norte
Rather than continuing along the GR route we carried on a bit to the higher ground to the north

Hacia el sur está el Dulla, al otro lado del canal por el que pensamos descender
To the south lay the Dulla, beyond the ravine down which we planned to return

No existe senda para llegar al barranco principal, por lo que tuvimos que subir por la ladera empinada. Al principio me dirigí a la lengua herbosa entre las rocas pero resultó acabar en una cueva así que nos desviamos hacia la derecha.
There is no path up to the entrance to the main ravine so a steep clamber up the hillside ensued. On discounting the grassy area between the outcrops (it turned out to lead to a cave) we veered to the right

Monty nos esperaba mientras el cielo se oscurecía. La roca a la derecha estaba a punto dedescubrirse..
Monty waited for us as the day momentarily darkened. The rock on the right was about to reveal itself completely...

Habíamos llegado a la Brecha de la Llosa. En nuestra visita anterior llegamos al cerro de Dulla, que ahora quedaba delante de nosotros.
We had reached the Llosa gap. The escarpment in front of us was the point we arrived at on our previous visit, before heading down a ravine to the south

y en medio el canal de la Mata (o barranco del Dulla)
And in between these two outcrops lies the Mata (or Dulla) ravine

Al oeste el embalse del Ebro y el Escudo.
To the west lay the Ebro reservoir and the Escudo pass we'd driven past to get here

I walked up to the foot of the Paño rockface to take in the view

Después de almorzar pasamos al canal de la Mata, descendiendo a un sendero que recorre la ladera sur
After eating we crossed over into the Mata ravine, making our way down to a path running along the southern side

Nos llevaba a la base del barranco
It gradually took us down to the base of the gorge

Los distintos canales convergen a medida que vamos hacia el este. Había más agua en el riachuelo que la última vez que visitábamos el lugar, y tuvimos que pasar de una orilla a otra constantemente. No recomendaría hacer este ruta después de una época de lluvias copiosas.
The ravines converge as we head east and the surprising amount of water in the brook meant we were constantly crossing over from one bank to another. A route to be avoided following heavy rainfall...

Los farallones calcáreos a nuestros lados dibujaban formas muy llamativas
The limestone cliffs presented wonderful shapes at our sides

Conectamos con la GR de nuevo y volvimos al pueblo justo cuando se ponía el sol. Cuando paramos en Puentedey a tomar un café la noche se había instalado.

We joined up with the marked route and returned to the village just as daylight was extinguished. By the time we stopped in Puentedey for a coffee a mile down the road, night was upon us.
