Robles otoñales/Autumn oaks

Antes de la caída de las hojas de los robles en la meseta, quería visitar un ejemplar en la Montaña Palentina. Para que el trayecto algo largo en coche mereciera la pena, encontré un track que incluye otros lugares interesantes de la zona. El primero es esta choza usada por pastores de la comarca de Cervera.

I wanted to see a famous oak tree in Castile before the oak trees on the meseta lost their leaves. To make the longish car journey worthwhile I found a track including other places of interest in the area. The first is this hut formerly used by cattle drovers.

La escarcha nos esperaba al salir de un bosquecillo, pero aunque en el coche había marcado 0º,  el día estaba soleado y no necesitamos la ropa de invierno.

The frost was awaiting us on the other side of this copse, but even though the reading in the car was 0ºC, we enjoyed a sunny day and and winter gear was not needed.

Bajamos al embalse de Requejada

We made our way down to a reservoir

Y una vez abajo lo bordeamos 

which we then skirted on the southern side

Un poco más tarde entramos en otro bosque 

Later on we entered a (mainly oak) forest

Un camino nos lleva al Roblón de Estalaya, el impresionante árbol de más de 600 años que impulsó esta ruta

The trail took us up to "Grandad", the oak tree of more than 600 years of age that was the reason for this excursion

Lo rodeé

I walked round it

Aquí sí hacía fresco, y después de manducar algo, continuamos ladera arriba entre los árboles

It was much cooler sat by the big oak, and after we'd had a bite to eat, we carried on up the hill

It didn't take long to get to the top

Desde el vértice geodésico del Alto San Cristóbal veíamos la Sierra de Peña Sagra y Sierra de Híjar

From the trig point at the top there are views of the Peña Sagra and Híjar ranges

El Espigüete, Curavacas y Peña Prieta

and the highest mountains in Palencia

y bajamos en esa dirección, pronto viendo el embalse debajo

We walked down a trail in that direction, the reservoir soon coming into view

Llegamos a un pueblo con una iglesia románica que destaca encima de una colina y otra muy fea abajo a la izquierda en el pueblo

We came to a village with a romanesque church atop a hill and another very ugly one below it to the left in the village

Volvemos al coche atravesando más robledales

We made our way back to the car through more oak woods

Paramos a tomar un café en Aguilar, que ofrecía también bonitos colores otoñales

We stopped for a coffee on the way back in Aguilar, which was itself festooned in lovely autumn garb.
