Después del agradable paseo por el PR. S-21 en Soba, tenía interés en conocer la zona un poco más. Así que fui a Veguilla (donde esté el ayuntamiento de la comarca), y allí comencé el PR. S-20. Por senderos a veces un poco liosos caminaba hacía el suroeste. Enfrente se ve Villar, con su iglesia blanca, por donde pasaré a la vuelta.
Having enjoyed the previous walk in Soba (SE Cantabria) so much, I decided to do another short walk (PR. S-20) in the same area. Leaving Veguilla, where Soba town hall is located, I followed paths taking a south-westerly direction. Across the way is Villar, with its white church, which I'll be going through on the way back.

Después de pasar cerca de Lavín hay una subida con buen surtido de flores y arbolillos
After skirting the village of Lavín there's an uphill stretch, exuberant with flowers and bushes
A la vuelta rodearé ese farallón verde tan sugerente
I'll be walking round the foot of that suggestive green cliff face on my way back
Llegué a Quintana y di una vuelta por el pueblo - una mezcla de alguna casa bien cuidada, la mayoría bastante menos, y por todas partes casas abandonadas en varios estados de deterioro. Hay un panel que informa sobre la Torre medieval de los Velasco, pero no la encontré. Más tarde descubriría que está un poco alejada del pueblo.
I came out near Quintana; I took a look around the village - a mixture of one or two well-appointed houses, most though in a sorrier state and everywhere you look abandoned ones left to fall to pieces. There's also a medieval tower, which I didn't see, only to read later that it's outside the built-up area

Up the road to the nearby village of Cañedo, where for the first time I saw a signpost for the walk I was doing. It's use limited to pellet-gun practice as far as I could see
La parte etnográfica de la ruta ahora daba paso a la paisajística. Sigo hacia arriba y echo una mirada atrás a Cañedo y, un poco más abajo Quintana, antes de continuar por el antiguo camino a Castilla
The ethnographic part of the walk now gave way to natural scenery. A look back down at Cañedo and Quintana before continuing on what was the old road that linked this valley with Castille

Salimos a una pista que sube a nuestra izq. pero no la cogemos; hay que cruzar el arroyo que está al otro lado y subir por una senda estrecha que nos lleva a la parte más bonita de la ruta: una cambera que sube en zigzags por un hayedo cerca de Busquemau, lugar que recuerdo de mapas consultados años atrás
We come out onto a track that goes up to our left, but we don't follow it; instead we cross the brook on the other side and take a narrow path up to the most beautiful part of the walk, a beech forest near Busquemau which we zigzag our way through

On reaching the road I turned round and followed a concrete track down to the east briefly returning to the woods

The descent takes you down below the Alto de Tiñones and the path is easy to follow

Al cambiar de dirección al SE para rodear el farallón, veo como la niebla se pega a la montaña
as I change direction to the SE round the foot of the cliffs, the mist hugs the side of the mountain

The only sound was the water crashing down the hillside opposite
Después de un rato vemos Veguilla al otro lado del valle
Eventually Veguilla comes into view on the other side of the valley
Un camino nos baja de la aldea de El Hoyo a la carretera
A lane leads down from El Hoyo to the road
Justo antes de llegar a ella veo una capilla abandonada
Just before taking it I go past an abandoned chapel
Al ver la puerta abierta, entro, y me sorprende ver que se ha dejado el altar con los figurines de madera a su suerte
Seeing the door open, I go inside and am surprised to see the altar still standing with wooden figures struggling to resist the passing of time
La ladera a mi derecha me llama la atención I'm struck by the property over to my right

El momento desagradable del paseo: ver este frigorífico en un lugar nada apropiado
The unpleasant moment on the walk: this fridge, disposed of in an environmentally unfriendly manner
Después de pasar por Villar, cojo un atajo hacia el fondo del valle, que no recomiendo a los que quieran evitar la maleza. Cruzo el Gándara de nuevo y sólo me queda subir por la carretera a Veguilla.
After going through Villar, I take a shortcut down to the bottom of the valley, which was rather too overgrown for me to recommend it to anyone else, and cross the Gándara again, with a short walk up the road to Veguilla.
