En torno al Cares/The Cares Walk

Este fin de semana en Valdeón me dio la oportunidad de acompañar a un amigo de tierras andaluzas a conocer la Ruta de Cares. Había descartado esta excursión, suponiendo que iba a ser imposible aparcar en la zona por estar en agosto y pensando que habría la masificación que se suele ver en el extremo asturiano, en Poncebos. Pero me dijeron que "para nada" y a las 9:15 aparcamos tranquilamente en Caín de Valdeón.

Last weekend I had the chance to accompany a friend from the south of Spain along the Cares walk. It's the most popular hike in the Picos de Europa, and I would have kept well away, thinking of the crowds that flock to the northern end in Poncebos, but surprisingly, in Caín we had no problem parking at 9.30 am. on a Sunday in August!

La bajada de 500 metros por los bosques desde Posada de Valdeón es preciosa, y a medio camino paramos a ver el Chorco de los Lobos, que data del siglo XVII - ha sido restaurado por motivos etnográficos.

The 500-metre descent through the woods from the main town in Valdeón is lovely, and halfway down we stopped to have a look at this wolftrap, originally from the 17th century. They would guide the wolves into the funnel-shaped trap which ended in the stone dungeon at the bottom... I've seen others, but this has been restored for ethnographical reasons and is much more striking.

Era la primera vez que empezaba la ruta en Caín. No había demasiadas personas y se pudo disfrutar de las vistas en la sombra y maravillarnos de la obra de ingeniería que la hizo posible.

It was the first time I'd started the Cares walk in Caín de Valdeón. There weren't too many people and we were able to enjoy the views in the shade and marvel at the engineering work from the last century that made it possible 

Como es bien sabido, el sendero arranca al altura del río y después de pasar por varios túneles y algún puente, va cogiendo altura sobre el Cares

The path starts off next to the river Cares and after passing through various tunnels carved out of the cliffs and the odd bridge over the gorge, it gains height with regard to the river

A las dos horas de empezar, en el kilómetro 8,5 a la altura de los Collaínos ya nos daba el sol, y puesto que lo siguiente era la subida a los Collaos, y habíamos quedado para comer, nos dimos la vuelta. 

After a couple of hours, and having covered just over two thirds of the path, we were feeling the strong sunshine, and as we had to get back for lunch, we turned round and walked back.

Por casualidad, la última vez que anduve por la "Garganta divina" tampoco completé todo el recorrido. 

A finales de mayo de 2009 salí de Poncebos, y a continuación subo unas fotos de aquel día caluroso. En ese momento no tenía blog, así que aprovecho para completar la visión de la ruta desde el norte además de ofrecer imágenes ¡inéditas! desde arriba. 

As it happens, the last time I followed the Cares I didn't do the whole walk either. At the end of May in 2009 I set off from Poncebos in Asturias, and as I didn't have this blog back then, I'll post a few photos now to cover the whole walk and add pictures from higher up.

Aquel día disfruté muchísimo con las vistas, pero recuerdo haberlo pasado mal durante la vuelta a Poncebos a causa del calor - no corría aire  como es normal en un entorno tan encajonado.

I remember the beautiful views from that walk, but also how I suffered from the heat on the way back along the Cares path - not a breath of air in a narrow gorge.

Back to the present: we returned to Caín, walking past the Raya and Culiembro paths I went up and came down respectively 17 years ago.

and were in good time for our lunch date.
