Peña Sagra vista desde la cara este/ Looking up at Peña Sagra

Con ganas de disfrutar de un paseo de "veroño" salimos de San Sebastián de Garabandal en Rionansa. Las "visiones" que presenciamos eran de los comienzos de cambio de color de las hojas en los bosques . Más que suficientes para nuestro bienestar de espíritu.

Looking forward to a walk on an early autumn day, we set out from a village that made the headlines in the 60s when three local girls claimed the Virgin Mary had appeared before them. The visions we enjoyed were of the first changes of colour of the leaves on the trees. Spritual wellbeing that more than sufficed.

Seguimos el denominado "Camino de Castilla". Al rato vislumbramos la cima de la Sierra de Peña Sagra que queda más al sur

We followed the so-called Castile way. The southernmost summit of the Peña Sagra sierra was the first to come into view

Cueto Cucón

y en seguida la continuación de la Sierra hasta el Cuernón

and soon afterwards the continuation of the sierra as far as the Cuernón - the highest point

En una zona de cabañas la pista se acaba

The track led us to these pastures

Seguimos hacia la derecha y con la ayuda de ocasionales postes buscamos una senda que nos llevaría por una acebal hacia los restos del camino antiguo

We headed to the right and, helped by occasional signposts, sought out a path up towards the old way up the valley

 

Hay que cruzar algún arroyo y de vez en cuando había tramos encharcados

There was the odd stream to cross, and a few waterlogged stretches

Pero el reto mayor era encontrar el mejor camino entre los escajos 

But the biggest challenge was finding the best way through the gorse

Pico de las Astillas

Cruzamos un canal que capta agua de los arroyos que salen de las faldas del Cuernón. Lo construyeron presos políticos en los años 40.

We crossed a channel that takes water from the streams that run down from the Cuernón to a Hydro-electric plant. It was built by political prisoners in the 40s.

Durante la última parte de la subida tuvimos que sortear mucha vegetación

In the last stretch of the walk up the hill brambles and gorse made for slow going

Y llegar a la pista era un alivio

And it was a relief to get onto the track

En el collado de Abellán encontramos tres mastines que estaban en los huesos. Si el dueño no los alimenta, no estarán en condiciones de defender el rebaño contra los lobos

At the Abellán pass we were met by three clearly undernourished mastiffs. How the owner expects them to be able to defend the cattle against attacks by wolves in that sorry state I don't know.

Abajo hacia el este está Tudanca

Down below to the east is Tudanca

No suelo ver la Sierra de Peña Sagra así de cerca desde este lado, ya que se suele subir desde el oeste

I don't usually see Peña Sagra close up from this side as its peaks are usually climbed from the west

La bajada por la pista para completar el círculo se me habría hecho un poco aburrido si no fuera por las perspectivas de las cimas que he ido subiendo durante estos años en Cantabria

The walk down the track to complete the loop would have been a bit boring were it not for the varying views of the summits that I've been up during these years spent living in Cantabria

La pista empieza a descender

The track leads down to link up with the one we took at the beginning of the walk

y llego al pueblo

and leads back to the village
