Ambos lados del Ebro/Either side of the Ebro

Cruzamos el Ebro en Villaescusa para acercarnos a una cascada que habíamos visto de lejos cuando hicimos otra ruta en Valderredible a finales de 2024. 

Crossing the Ebro in Villaescusa, we set off for a waterfall we'd seen from afar on a walk in the south of Cantabria at the end of 2024

Seguimos el curso del río durante unos minutos

We followed the river for a few minutes

 

y luego subimos hacia el sur, llegando a la parte baja de la cascada, en estas fechas con poco agua

before heading up to the south, and soon coming to the lower part of the waterfall, with relatively little water at this time of the year

Lo llamativo es que las caídas de agua se ven en distintos puntos de la ladera

The waterfalls are visible all the way up the hillside

En este otro punto, más arriba, el contraste del agua con el musgo nos deleitó

Higher up, we were struck by the contrast of the water with the moss

Bajamos por otro camino a Villaescusa. El siguiente propósito de la excursión era visitar unos fortines de la guerra civil en lo alto del escarpe de enfrente

We came down to Villaescusa via another path. The next part of the walk was a visit to some pillboxes from the Spanish civil war on the top of the escarpement opposite

El contraste entre los colores de la roca y los árboles me gustaba mucho

I loved the contrast between the colours of the rock and the trees

Pasamos cerca de unas piedras, que son todo lo que queda de las ruinas de un pueblo abandonado hace más de dos siglos. 

We walked past a few stone walls, which are all that remain of a village abandoned more than two centuries ago

San Andrés

El pueblo estaba cerca de este meandro del río, donde hoy el ganado campaba a sus anchas. ¡Increíble pensar que ahora el agua corre casi cien metros más hacia abajo!

The village was near this former oxbow lake, today home to a herd of cattle. It's incredible to think that the course of the river is now almost a hundred metres lower down! 

Me quedé un rato a saludar estos caballos

I spent a few minutes with these horses

Vimos unos refugios de la guerra civil, un fortín en particular dominaba el valle abajo

We saw some pillboxes from the civil war, one of which, perched on the edge of the cliff, overlooked the valley below

En otro lugar se veía el meandro desde arriba

Nearby we saw the oxbow lake from above

Más construcciones quedan algo alejadas del precipicio

Other pillboxes were further away from the edge of the cliff

La temperatura subía, y imaginábamos cómo los que usaban los fortines habrían sufrido tanto los calores de verano como el frío del invierno  Nosotros, que pudimos, bajamos hacia el río

It was getting uncomfortably warm, and we felt for the men who had to suffer the heat of summer and the rigours of winter in this exposed wood. As for us, we headed back down to the river.
