I've been to Liendo, set in a polje (a depression in a karst landscape) in eastern Cantabria several times, but not as the starting point for a hike. Setting off from the southern part of the village, near the motorway, I followed a path that is on the Santiago Way and which took me to the other side of a viaduct on the A-8.

There were pastures on either side of the road. The bull in one of them had a couple of impressive horns to show off

Poco después veo el monte adonde me dirijo
Soon afterwards the hill I was heading for came into view
Peña de las Abejas
Este ternero se acerca a saludar
This bullock came up to say hello

On the way up the slope these goats stopped dead in their tracks when they saw me

The last part of the walk is through terrain that makes progress very tricky. I followed the rocks in the vain hope they'd take me most of the way up

They took me only so far. I was left with no alternative but to make my way through the dense undergrowth

Eventually I reached the top, with mount Candina to the north

To the east there's a "hum" - the name for a residual hill in karst landscapes
Pico Cuito

Coming down from the summit was even more complicated than going up and I felt like the conquistador Cabeza de Vaca making his way through the Amazon. At last, thankfully, I got out of the jungle-like terrain and returned to Liendo. In the distance is the rocky summit la Peña, that was next up on my agenda.

Otro hum
Another hum, this one on the edge of Liendo
Monte Cogorio

A quarter of an hour later I was in Las Cárcobas, a suburb just up the hill from Laredo

From Erio, a promontory a short walk from Las Cárcobas, you can see mount Atalaya in the foreground

and the Peña I saw from the walk down from Las Abejas half an hour or so earlier. From this angle it looks like an animal's head looking out to sea

As I walked towards it, I realised that for the 2nd time that day I was on the Santiago Way, (but going in the wrong direction!)

From the western summit, looking towards Erio (middle of the photo, but doesn't stand out) with the Atalaya behind

Liendo, now seen from the north. The hill I climbed earlier is out of sight

The eastern summit, with mount Candina behind and the rock known as the Oriñón whale jutting out into the Bay of Biscay

Returning along a different route I was lucky enough to see a stick insect on the track

a mixture of colours: some bracken is already looking autumnal while other plants are still green

Looking towards the southwest, I engage in the usual activity of working out which are the mountains I can see from this unfamiliar perspective

And for the 2nd time that morning I feel like an explorer in the "New World" - llamas!

The walk back to the car is via this pretty path.
