Un paseo a las Pisas/ Back to Burgos

Volvemos a las Merindades de Burgos para hacer otra ruta circular, esta vez pasando por la Cascada de Las Pisas (que no encontramos en invierno). Empezamos a andar justo antes del pueblo de Cubillos del Rojo (Valdebezana) por la pista que va a Leva.

Back to the neighbouring province of Burgos for a walk taking in the Pisas Waterfall, which we tried  in vain to find in winter.

Después de medio kilómetro más o menos, dejamos la pista para seguir campo a través a la izquierda, dirección noroeste. Pronto encontramos un sendero, que seguimos un buen rato en la misma dirección.
We set off from the village of Cubillos del Rojo, briefly following the track to Leva, before taking a path to the north-west. 

Al ver abajo hacia el norte la carretera que va a San Cibrián, vamos pensando en buscar el lugar para cambiar de rumbo.  Poco después del lugar de esta foto giramos al NE y pasamos por debajo del tendido eléctrico.

We were on the lookout for a suitable place to change direction and just after the place where this photo was taken, we turned to the NE and passed below the electricity lines.

...y mariposas jalonan el camino - esta se llama "chupa leche"
and butterflies in evidence along the way. I'd never managed to photograph a swallowtail butterfly before

Salimos a la carretera a la entrada de San Cibrián y seguimos las indicaciones de la GR-85  hacia la cascada de Las Pisas, dejando la carretera por la izquierda y perdiendo unos doscientos metros a medida que bajamos al río
After reaching the village of San Cibrián, we followed the GR-85 signposts and headed down to the river

En época de deshielo y de lluvias caerá agua por la pared del fondo. Ya volveremos.
I'll be back at a more propitious time of the year, when the water comes gushing over the wall in the background.

Llegamos a Villabáscones de Bezana y de ahí continuamos a Quintanabaldo, ya en la Merindad de Valdeporres - a la entrada del pueblo una numerada se deja fotografiar

Después de parar para almorzar, seguimos un rato el camino balizado que va a Puentedey, pero poco después de pasar una portilla canadiense subimos hacia la derecha por un sendero hasta la carretera. Salimos al lado de un cruce, donde subimos a la izq. a Villavés.  Ahora vamos hacia el SE en subida gradual, con vista bonitas hacia los farallones de enfrente.

Vemos el pueblo de Puenterey, y pronto giramos al sur

y llegamos al pueblo bien conservado de Leva

De ahí solo restan 3 kilómetros por pista para completar el círculo
before concluding the circuit after a pleasant 7-hour walk

Regresé a Villabáscones en abril 2018 confiado en que tras un invierno tan lluvioso la cascada presentaría otro aspecto. Así fue:

I returned to the area in abril 2018, confident that after an extremely wet winter, the waterfall would look rather different. Such was the case:

Ravines, ruins and Romanesque / Un paseo por Las Merindades

En seguida cogimos un sendero para subir hasta las ruinas del castillo

On the way to a small village called Consortes. The call of a cuckoo accompanied us throughout the first half of the walk - the first one I'd heard in 2016 - which gives an indication of how few hikes there have been this year.
Camino del pueblo de Consortes. Durante esta primera parte del paseo nos acompañaba el canto continuo del cuco. Siempre me produce un efecto placentero oírlo, a pesar del comportamiento tan particularista de este pájaro.

And thence to Lándraves in Valle de Valdebezana
De allí seguimos a Lándraves, ya en el Valle de Valdebezana

I'd just seen my first ever (surprisingly big) crayfish near Lándraves, but unfortunately didn't have time to get the camera out before it scuttled under a rock

Acababa de ver por primera vez en la vida en cangrejo de río, que no se parecía nada a un cangrejo, sino más bien a una langosta. Sólo lo vi cuando se movió, y por supuesto ¡no conseguí sacar la cámara a tiempo! Sólo en casa pude comprobar qué había visto.

We then walked up to Munilla, where we would change direction to head back towards the south
Luego subimos hasta el pueblo de Munilla, donde cambiaríamos de rumbo para volver hacia el sur.

Subimos un momento a la izquierda al llegar al pueblo para ver estas tumbas medievales

Looking back towards where we came out of the ravine in the centre. Halfway up on the left a small rocky outcrop marks the spot where the graves lie.
Ya enfrente de Munilla, se ve donde salimos del desfiladero en el centro de la imagen. A la izquierda, unas rocas que parecen estar a la mitad de una ladera indican donde están las tumbas.

Around this time the sound of thunder became the main backdrop, only punctuated by a woodpecker drilling away at a nearby tree.
Empezábamos a escuchar truenos, y más cerca, un pájaro carpintero cogió el relevo al cuco. 

We entered the beautifully kept village of Crespos

and visited its impressive Romanesque church, surprisingly open to wander around
y visitamos su bonita iglesia románica, que se encontraba abierta - a diferencia de lo que parece ser lo habitual.

On the way back to Arreba I was taken by the beams that remained from this old building in ruins
Volviendo a Arreba, al pasar delante de este edificio en ruinas,  me llamaba la atención cómo se resistían  las vigas.

We stopped for a moment on the drive back by the Ebro reservoir to take a photo of the approaching storm - which broke just moments later.
Paramos un momento durante el trayecto de vuelta al lado del embalse del Ebro para sacar alguna foto de la tormenta que se acercaba - de hecho tardó segundos en estallar.

Rambling along the Cadiz coastline/Paseando por la costa gaditana

In contrast to the snow in the last entry, sun and sand on the Costa de la Luz. A pleasant walk along the beach from Conil to El Palmar. We crossed the bridge over the Salado river and stopped a moment to look back at Conil.

Como contrapeso a la nieve de la última entrada, un poco de sol y arena en la Costa de la Luz. Un paseo agradable por la playa de Conil a El Palmar. Cruzamos el puente sobre el río Salado y paramos un momento para echar la vista atrás hacia Conil.

To the left the Castilnovo beach lies ahead of us, with the lookout tower that gives the beach its name clearly visible in the distance
A la izquierda queda la playa de Castilnovo, con la torre de vigía que le da nombre claramente visible a lo lejos

It dates back to the 16th century - behind it can be seen some more recent additions to the skyline.
Data del siglo 16 - detrás se pueden ver unas torres mucho más recientes

A delicious lunch of tapas including exquisite red tuna tataki and scrumptious sea anemones in the first bar on the road along the seafront before the return walk. That's not my glass by the way!
En la cervecería de la carretera enfrente de la torre (no la de antes) disfrutamos de unas tapas que incluían un fantástico tataki de atún rojo, el cazón en adobo de mi vida y unas ortiguillas que nunca defraudan, antes de volver a Conil. No tomamos ningún chupito - así que ¡ese vasito no es mío!

Next day, a little further down the coast, we set off from Zahora towards Trafalgar
Al día siguiente,  salimos de Zahora (el siguiente pueblo después de El Palmar) por la playa hacia Trafalgar

Less than half an hour later we we walking up to the lighthouse
En menos de media hora habíamos llegado al faro
