la meseta sobre la meseta/plateauing

Cuando viajo por el norte de Castilla a veces paso las pequeñas mesetas al lado de la carretera y me imagino que si fuera un vecino de la comarca serían las únicas posibilidades de andar por cuestas. La última salida que realizamos me dio la oportunidad de experimentar exactamente eso.

When I'm driving through Castile I see the occasional plateau to the side of the road and I think to myself that if I lived in that part of the country, that'd be the only chance of walking uphill. The most recent excursion we made gave me the opportunity to do exactly that.

Partimos de una aldea del norte de Burgos, camino del altozano que se ve en la foto.

We set off from a little village in the north of Burgos, headed for the hill seen in the photo

Turzo

Pasamos delante de una iglesia románica

The hamlet has a Romanesque church

Y desde el alto, con su cruz de factura original, vemos Turzo abajo. A la derecha está Peña Nava, monte que visitamos el año pasado

And from the hilltop, with its original cross, we see Turzo below. Over to the right is another hill we visited last year

El Cotorro del Moral

A medida que pasamos de un alto al siguiente vemos las hoces del Ebro abajo - el río está entre el escarpe y la llanura aluvial verde claro

As we walk from one hill to the next we spy the Ebro gorge below - the river lies between the escarpment and the light green alluvial plain

Una bajada pindia

a steep descent

el Ebro se ve a la izquierda

se ve un poco más aquí, a su paso por Pesquera

a little more is visible here, as it passes Pesquera

Aquí paramos a comer - buscando la sombra ¡en marzo!

This is where we stopped to eat - grateful for the shade, in March!

Pico Mazo

Camino de Pico del Águila (no vimos águilas pero sí un par de alimoches) pasamos cerca de este viejo roble

On the way to "Eagle's Peak" (we didn't see any eagles, but a couple of Egyptian vultures had circled above us on Pico Mazo) we came upon this old oak

y este refugio de pastor

and a shepherd's shelter

El camino de vuelta totalmente llano

The walk back was totally flat

Pero antes habrá que bajar de esta meseta sobre la meseta

But first we'd have to make our way down from this plateau on the meseta central

Volvemos a ver El Cotorro, acercándonos a Turzo. Hace la derecha se ven los montes por los que anduvimos

We walked past the first peak of the day as we approached Turzo. The plateau we traversed stretches out to the right

La iglesia de antes

Y un par de casas de pueblo con inscripciones llamativas

and a couple of village houses with interesting inscriptions

Y la alegría de la primavera.
