Una ruta por hoyos del macizo central / a return to central Picos

Desde 2019 no había hecho ninguna excursión por el macizo central de Picos de Europa. La irrupción del Covid, la obligación de reservar el teleférico, las obras en el Desfiladero de la Hermida, sobre todo esta última añadidura a un trayecto en coche ya de por si largo suman las causas principales.

Pero ya tocaba meterme de nuevo en este universo de roca caliza, aunque al subir a la estación superior de Fuente Dé todo parecía como si hubiera estado ayer.

En cambio lo que más hemos notado ha sido en la carretera. Las obras del Desfiladero están acabadas y se nota mucho el ensanchamiento. También la ausencia de semáforos. Me alegro mucho por los habitantes de Liébana y los transportistas que usan esta vía a diario.

I hadn't done any walks through the central massif of Picos de Europa since 2019. The effects of the pandemic, including needing to make reservations for the cable car at Fuente Dé, and the major roadworks on the road that runs through the gorge that separates this limestone landscape from the coast go a long way to explaining why.

But once we set out from the upper cable car station it seemed as if we'd been there yesterday. What was vastly different though was the recently widened road through the Hermida gorge. And no traffic lights to hold us up!

Anyway, as far as the walking bit is concerned, we set off for the area you can see in the photo.

y antes de cambiar de rumbo al paso hacia otra vertiente una mirada hacia atrás: a la derecha de Peña Vieja vemos la peña con nombre muy apto ¡cuando de mi memoria se trata!

Aunque habíamos pensado subir la Torre del Hoyo Oscuro, las nubes que llegaban no nos garantizaban una tarde sin lluvia, así que bajamos directamente hacia tierras leonesas

Although we'd planned to clamber up the Dark Depression Tower, the clouds seemed to be announcing a change in the weather, so we crossed straight over to the other side into the province of León

Mientras bajábamos pasamos cerca de unos rebecos, que no se asustaban en lo más mínimo al vernos

Cogemos la canal de San Luis, esta vez sin el calor que he pasado otras veces en el mismo lugar

We follow the San Luis path, fortunately rather cooler than I've experienced it on previous excursions

Al final no llovió, y habríamos tenido tiempo de subir a la Torre del Hoyo Oscuro, pero aun así ha sido una excursión bonita incluyendo parajes que no conocía.

In the end no rain fell, and we would have had time to climb the Dark Depression Tower, but it was an enjoyable walk all the same including landscapes I hadn't seen before.
