No tardamos en llegar a una zona llana de gran belleza, el valle de Marcadau:                                                                                                    Another day, another downhill start, but this time with a touch of mist. We didn't take long to reach the Marcadau valley, an area of great beauty:

Although the day before had in theory been the standout stage, this one was longer, owing to repair work at the hut we'd been meant to stay at. To reduce the extra elevation gain we took a chairlift, a novelty for me.

When we got going again, we walked to Gaube lake, popular with tourists. In the distance we can see Vignemale, the highest mountain in the French Pyrenees, where we were headed

From the other side of the lake the mist could be seen rising up from the valley

As we ate up the miles, the mountain became nearer

Vignemale

And at the refuge under repair we were treated to this spectacular sight, the mountain with the glaciar below

There was still a 600-metre climb to come. Not long after starting, the silence was broken with the coming and going of a helicopter bringing material up to the hut

The heat and physical issues made this a difficult stretch for me

From the pass we could see the highest refuge in the Pyrenees (left of photo, partial view): Bayssellance. Away to the S-E, Roland's Breach, a famous gap in the mountains is visible to the right

Later from the refuge I took these photos of Vignemale and the pass we'd come over

and the sea of clouds that was coming up from the south-east

The last day would be the longest, and at 5.30 we were already getting up. Thanks to a last-minute cancellation we'd all been able to sleep inside rather than in a tent. So off we set on a hike that would take over eleven hours

We walked back down to Oulettes de Gaube, with Gaube lake visible in the distance

From there we had climb up to the Col des Mulets

Here we crossed over into Spain; a look back at the French side

We descended to an immense glaciated valley, source of the Ara river

After a good while we changed tack, turning up to the right

Behind us towers the imposing west face of the Vignemale massif

The pass didn't seem so far away, but appearances can be deceptive....

This was tough going, each little breeze a moment of relief, but little by little I made it up to the last pass on the trek

What followed was a long descent to the point we'd departed from six days previously

We spotted the Baños lake at Panticosa below, but the walk down seemed to take ages, under hot sun with hardly any breeze

I didn't feel anything in particular on reaching the bottom- I was on automatic pilot

This six-day trek demands a summary: it was a positive experience, I had the good fortune to do it with excellent friends; the backdrop was beautiful and I was wowed by the scale of the mountain range and the variety of landscapes. Also, I suppose I should feel satisfaction at having completed practically 100 kms and an elevation gain of 7000 mts at my age, though this maybe hasn't sunk in; I enjoyed the convivial atmosphere at the huts/refuges and the contact with other hikers and mountaineers -and the chance to practise my French has been a definite plus. So I count myself lucky to have been able to visit a part of the Pyrenees that was on my bucket list in this way.
The less-than-positive part would be that it was just too hot for me at least half of the time, though I am aware that it would have been worse had we got caught in a storm. Partly as a result of the temperature, being devoid of energy at the end of the last two stages was not good either. Finally, the feeling of having to keep to a tight schedule: the estimated time the stages would take and having to get to the huts in time for an early dinner didn't leave a lot of time for taking things in leisurely and getting the most out of places we went through.

One last thought, which we talked about a fair bit during the trek, is the way this brought home to me that even though you might think you're in pretty good shape, when you're in your mid-sixties you're not the same person you were forty years ago, when you went off to the mountains. That becomes clear when you see younger hikers disappearing up the slope ahead of you, even those carrying some weight in their backpacks!

I didn't get a decent photo of the lammergeier (bearded vulture) that circled above us on the first day, nor of any of the several groundhogs we came across, especially in France, so this photo of a humble vache perchée from the last day can take their place here.
