Anticipándome a las restricciones / A step ahead of lockdown

I decided to take a day off work before travel restrictions came into effect and returned to an area I was exploring a couple of months previously. Setting off from Lebeña I followed the Lebaniego Way arrows out of the village. At a bend to the left stands the El Valle water deposit. Here I left the track and took a path behind the building.
It looked as if I might be unlucky with the weather again, as there had also been low-lying cloud  in the summer

However, I went through the stratus and saw that the holm oaks had given way to another member of the genus

And as I got higher, I got a good view of the sea of clouds that covered the Hermida Gorge

I left the track just where it starts to level off. The name of the destination "Arcedón" has been painted on a rock at the foot of the path I took

Nearing the Arcedón Pass, I spy this beech that's beginning to don its autumn wear

When I came out onto the high ground, I headed up to the right to take in the views from Cueto Torcal. The sun had gone to work on the cloud and I could see Lebeña down in the valley below the eastern massif of Picos.

I walked back down towards the Arcedón pastures

Instead of following the PR-S3 route (which has been left unattended with the advent of the Lebaniego Way) I made my way to the huts near Arecdón and from there NE down to Cordanca by means of a narrow path that is the least straightforward part of the excursion

Eventually I come out on a track that will take me down to Cicera, and which connects up with the PR-S3

I take a look at these huts then carry on down to the right

I don't stop in Cicera as I was there in the summer, and take the Lebaniego Way through the beech wood. Unlike in August, this time round there are good views of the surrounding mountainsides to be had

Where the track reaches its highest point I can see the area I walked up earlier on

But this time round I carry on down the track towards Lebeña

Once again on the slate track surrounded by holm oak

On reaching the first huts I leave the track I'd walked up that morning and follow the markings by a gate to go down via another route

At a fork lower down I turned right so as not to repeat the morning trail and walked down to the water deposit and from there on to Lebeña

Los abedules y los pozos / Last walk of summertime

With sunny and windy weather forecast, it seemed like an ideal last day of summertime to make the most of. What we got though was cloud and wind, which curtailed part of the walk we had planned. Mind you, the autumn colours  near the village of Cardaño de Arriba, which we set out from, were so beautiful that the lack of visibility above 2000 metres mattered not.

Half hidden behind the cloud in the centre are the "Cardaño Needles", which were to have been the high point of the day's walk

The route is clearly signposted to Las Lomas pools. To begin with, gentle slopes, which then get a bit steeper

The largest pool is the first one you come to. I had to wait for a brief break in the clouds to get a half-decent photo

A hundred metres higher up lies the second pool. From here you can see the Needles very well - if the clouds don't get in the way of course

There wasn't much point in continuing on up as we weren't going to see much. So we set off back down the path, making the most of a relative moment of clarity to observe the bigger pool

These are the slopes that lead up towards Peña Prieta, a mountain that marks the provincial limits between Palencia (this side) and Cantabria to the north

Descendiendo entre la retama                                                                                                           Walking down the broom-covered slopes

Más a la izquierda el Espigüete está completamente escondido                                                                                                 To our right is Pico Murcia, but you can barely see it through the clouds

In the centre is the stream that runs from the pool

Más abajo cruzamos el arroyo de Valcabe                                                                                           Lower down we cross another stream

And I spent the rest of the walk revelling in the autumn hues, especially the birch trees. I make no excuses for the number of photos that follow:

Un puente más y ya nos queda la última parte del descenso al aparcamiento                                         One more bridge and then the last part of the walk down to the car park

Well, it turns out we were lucky to choose that weekend, as this part of Spain is now off limits for those of us who live in Cantabria.

Celebration walk/ Un día señalado

Leaving Enterrías on a lovely sunny day taking the track to Dobárganes

In Dobárganes I had intended to walk down towards the main road to the bottom of the village and take the path up through the woods, but seeing a signpost (PR S-95) which offered me the chance to check out a new way up to Pico Jano I took that instead. The path came out at the pool I would have reached on the other side from the other approach.

I followed the path to the right straight up, crossing a tarmac track on the way. A pleasant walk through oak woods and meadow saffron

Coming out onto the summit of Pico Jano, with wonderful views in all directions:

From the lower part of the summit
Desde la parte baja de la cima:
Pico Lezna; Curavacas; Peña Prieta

Heading down to the east. Clouds making their way in from the coast to the left of Peña Ventosa

I followed a signpost down to the right towards Dobárganes, going down through a meadow before joining a track on the left for the rest of the descent to Enterrías, seen here with the road to Barrio and Ledantes in the background

A short walk (4 hours) to one of my favourite spots in Cantabria; that's how I'll remember saying goodbye to the fifties.
