When I was in Viaña three weeks ago I spotted a signpost for the Foramontanos trail. I'd always associated this with the main Saja valley, without realising there were branches leading off the main route. These were also used in the 9th and 10th centuries by those who were leaving the mountainous regions of the north to repopulate Castile after the Moors were driven south.
As this is a short section, I did it on a day when I had just the morning free. I parked in Renedo, which is rather more than the main road that runs through it, and crossed the river, before following a track up to the right. So as not to do exactly the same walk there and back, I followed a path that runs through somone's estate, without being sure whether it was a right of way or not. With some relief I regained the main track without having met anyone and soon took a fork that leads to an old chapel, and then takes you round to the left of a very noticeable hill.

From a bend in the track you get the only view on the walk of Viaña, behind which is the high ground I walked along a few weeks ago

From that vantage point the path makes its way down the valley

When I got to the road that links Viaña with Renedo I set off back up the path. Earlier on I'd heard gunshots from a hunting party on the other side of the road so to my surprise, I now heard one of their  dogs barking very nearby. Soon afterwards a large boar moved hurriedly past through the trees and about a minute later first one then a second dog came down the track I was on in pursuit. A couple of hunters in their orange vests were visible at the vantage point I'd stopped at before, but I that was the last I saw of them, the dogs or their quarry.
When I neared the place where I'd seen the gilets oranges I made up my mind to avoid any possible contact with them and their weapons, as well as varying the walk a little. So I turned off the track and headed up the steep hillside to revisit a summit I'd not been back to in over 10 years.

From the top of this conical peak there were decent views of Peña Sagra, with the village of Fresneda below

and the way I came up, with the path down to Viaña on the right

As I didn't have much time, after taking those photos, I started down the other side

A modest peak, but very noticeable from the road whenever you head towards Saja

I got back onto the track I'd been on a couple of hours before and came past the chapel again

I crossed the Saja and entered the village where I'd left my car.

I hadn't done a walk in the Cuera range for a long time and had never been to Asiegu.
From this village we could see the clouds covering nearby Arenas de Cabrales

From the carpark you can see the most famous mountain in Picos de Europa (just to the right of the post)

Subimos hacia la parte alta del pueblo
We walked up through the village

pasando cerca de un abrevadero bien decorado
admiring an aptly decorated drinking trough on the way

Una subida por camino de cemento
Up a cement track we walked

a walk up a steep hillside took us to the first summit

Hacia el norte está la cima gemela Cabeza Ubena                                                                                                   To the north is the twin peak

We quickly reached that one and had a better view of the sea of clouds that impeded us from seeing the real sea

and carried on enjoying the skyline. The Cuera range lies parallel to the coast and between this and the Picos de Europa, so it's a great vantage point

Apologies for repeating the same mountains as before, but the change in light altered the view

Setting off on a walk in the Soba region of Cantabria in 2021 I saw the range opposite and made a note to come back another day and see it close up. I was particularly taken by the valley that must separate it from the Hornijo range that I was headed for that day. The Canal de Ancillo it's called, and one of these days it will appear here. Meantime, I was back to do a shorter walk from Rozas village up to the range itself, which bears its name.

Rozas is the starting point for a well-known hike up to Pico San Vicente, to the east of where I was going today
Rozas

Looking southwards as I made my way up the grassy hillside

which gradually became typically karst

There are several summits, from the first of which a group of vultures kept me in their sights

I got to a summit that afforded this view of the Hornijo range opposite and the Ancillo valley below

To the other side was a summit higher than the one I was on

There are no paths up here and care needs to be taken as you seek out the least uncomfortable route up

From the top I saw another summit sightly higher, which is the highest point of the range. Although the walk thus far had been fun I didn't see the need to go farther

To the other side is Hornijo, and on its left, Mazo Grande

I went over to the north side to see what it's like down below where the Ancillo valley comes out

I started on my way back, but this time went round the first summit and descended to the SW

Going down was a bit steeper than coming up, but I soon got to a gentle grassy slope and walked down to ther mouth of the Ancillo valley, to which I will return one of these days

To the right is the range I just came down from, with a very visible slit in the rockface

I now headed back towards Rozas, with the range on my left

Behind me you can clearly see the wall that juts out of the Hornijo range and runs towards San Pedro

Bajé por un camino antiguo
I walked down an old path

and coming into Rozas I saw this house with an apt name:"Steep"

To end, I'm adding a photo of the Rozas range taken in 2021 from Hornijo
