Rodeando la Tabla/Circling the Table

 

Una ruta de corta distancia: salimos de la estación de esquí de Brañavieja, siguiendo la pista que sube hace el sur. La dejamos por seguir campo a través por senderos entre el brezo                                                                    A relatively short walk: from the Brañavieja ski station we followed a trail that heads south, leaving it to continue along paths and through the heather

A medida que subíamos encontramos restos de un viejo teleférico 

As we ascended we came across signs of the old chairlift

En el Cueto de la Horcada estamos aproximadamente en el punto medio de la Sierra del Cordel. Miramos hacia el oeste, con la Tabla muy cerca, a la misma altura que nosotros

The Cueto de la Horcada is roughly halfway along the Cordel range. Just over to the west, the Tabla summit is at exactly the same elevation

Eastwards lie peaks Iján and Cordel

El plan es rodear la Horcada y la Tabla por el norte, así que bajamos por el este hasta un punto en que podemos seguir una senda hacia la izquierda

The idea we have is to go round the Horcada and Tabla on the north side, so we head down to the east and find a path that'll take us to the left

Sin perder demasiada altitud cruzamos hasta la base de las rocas enfrente

Without losing too much height we cross over to the opposite side

Ahora toca subir unos doscientos metros por una ladera relativamente tendida

We now have to clamber up the mountainside to the west of the Tabla

y llegamos arriba donde paramos a almorzar mirando hacia el Cornón

and once we get to the top we stop for a bite to eat, looking towards Cornón

Bajamos en diagonal, primero por brezo

We make our way down diagonally - at first a pleasant walk through the heather

y más tarde tuvimos que vérnoslas con la retama, antes de conectar con un viejo camino del teleférico que no estaba del todo invadido por la vegetación

but later we came up against the dreaded broom. Thankfully we were later able to follow the old ski lift access route, which wasn't totally overgrown, and get to the bottom of the hill.

Late spring in southern Cantabria / Finales de primavera al sur de Cantabria

You have to wait till the end of spring to to see the trees in full leaf on high ground. Here are photos from a couple of walks I've done recently, in the southern part of the province.

We walked down from Cantabria's ski station (1650mts). No snow at this time of the year, but lovely to see the heather-covered mountainside opposite

We followed a path through a pretty birch wood

then changed direction and walked down to a brook

On the way back the other side we followed a trail through a holly wood

and back up to the start with views of the Sierra del Cordel

I chose a village in the southernmost part of the province to start this next walk as it's near an oak forest with many venerable trees

I crossed a firebreak and went in search of a well-known but badly burnt tree, though the one that caught my eye on the way down was this young oak struck by lightening

Crucé un cortafuegos para bajar hacia un roble muy conocido pero quemado y medio muerto que se llama el Abuelo. Pero me llamó la atención más este joven alcanzado por un rayo

I returned to the trail and when I left the trees behind I turned left down to a brook. The bushes in flower on the other side made for a lovely second part of the walk

Volví a la pista y al salir del bosque bajé hasta un arroyo. Al otro lado me esperaba el campo florido

The highest point of the area affords limited views owing to the pine trees on the summit

El punto más alto de la zona, El Bigüenzo (casi 1300mts), ofrece vistas limitadas debido al pinar que llega a su cima
