Los Aguayos

The first part of this walk took me through what is often referred to in England as broad-leaved woodland.

Coming out onto higher ground I got the distinct impression the cloud was going to continue to lie low

I passed various groups of horses
Pasé cerca de varios grupos de caballos

Below to the NE is the Alsa reservoir, which I was to see better from a distance than down at the shore

The highlight of the walk where the abundant wild flowers:

I walked down to the village of San Miguel de Aguayo, which I'd discovered for the first time last autumn, and wandered over to the church

I then took a concrete road, of which there seem to be several in the area, that makes its way up the hill behind the church to see if I could get a decent view of the reservoir. The increasing cloud cover made climbing higher a non-starter

Behind me I could see the hillside I'd walked over earlier on that morning

Poppies growing on a slag-heap
Unas amapolas embellecen una pequeña escombrera

Swathes of mist had been engulfing me well before I reached the reservoir, and I stayed long enough to take this photo before retreating

The mist came and went as I headed towards the next village in the valley

Very near Santa Olalla is Santa María de Aguayo, which exemplifies the ancient and modern of river-related technology; the old mill in ruins and just below that the pumps to send water uphill as part of the bi-transfer system in Cantabria

foxgloves in evidence as I walked down towards the pump plant.                                                                       estas dedaleras jalonan la bajada al río

I walked past the most eye-catching building in the village on the last leg of the hike.
El edificio más llamativo del pueblo

After leaving the road I indulged in some challenging encounters with barbed wire fences and boggy paths but was rewarded with one or two pleasant landscapes before reaching the end of the loop.

A calm morning. A cuckoo somewhere in the woods near the mill. We follow the road to the village of Butrera, walking up through the streets and out the other side.

The fog was taking its time disappearing, but lent itself towards a feeling of peace as we walked along the trail past fields of wheat, oats and barley. The quiet was punctuated by the insistent calls of another cuckoo.

The lifting of the fog was as gentle as the slope we made our way up

After a good while the sunlight started to break through and we left the trail to follow a path up through the woods

The path brought us up to the top of the hill and from there we headed east towards the highest point. We made our way through the thick vegetation without difficulty. One or two cairns were placed in the crook of the branches along the way

Occasional clearings allowed us a glimpse of the views to the south

Ahead lay the highest point: Pantarra. We had to go down before going up again to get there

Fortunately, the fog had now lifted completely

Unfortunately, the trig point was surrounded by bushes and there were no views

On the walk back we stopped at the odd place where we could survey the south

o el norte
or the north

But for the most part we had views of the path and the trees

Back on the path that had taken us to the top part of the hill, we descended to the NW and came out near the village of Linares - one of several with that name in Spain. We went to have a look at the church

From there we took the trail back to Butrera. The last part runs down through a pleasant wooded area

Rain drops started to fall, but we were spared the thunderstorms of the previous days

From Butrera you can see the eastern end of Pantarra - the summit is hidden from view, which is quite appropriate really.

En torno a Alájar / Spring in Sierra Morena

Chestnut trees are a common sight in the Aracena natural park, but their leaves are a bit late in coming out this year.

The cork oak, the other tree I most readily associate with the sierra in Huelva province, is evergreen. The local cork industry is suffering, as prices for the bark are rock bottom.

Olive trees, introduced by the Phoenicians and especially the Romans, also feature.

perhaps the most visble flower in the countryside is the rockrose

lavander is also flowering at this time of the year

It's not all grassland - the countryside is hillier and rockier in the Risco de Levante

the animal most associated with the sierra is the Iberian pig

Hay aldeas bonitas, como Los Madroñeros, que ya no tiene habitantes pero que se conserva en buen estado      There are pretty villages like Los Madroñeros, which is no longer inhabited but well maintained

la aldea rodeada de encinas
the village is surrounded by holm oak

and nearby is the larger village of Alájar
