Las Enguinzas

Debe de haber dejado de llover poco antes de que llegué a Esles de Cayón. Cuando empecé a subir la cuesta al este de Esles el agua bajaba por los bordes de la carretera en torrente

It must have just stopped raining when I got to the pretty village of Esles in the Cayón valley. As I began my walk up the hill to the east the water was rushing down by the sides of the road.

Todo muy verde gracias al agua caída recientemente

No surprise I suppose that it all looked very green for the time of year

Me dirigí al hayal

I followed the road up to the beechwood

atravesando la parte baja por un sendero

taking the path straight up through the lower part 

y la alta por pista

and continuing on the trail through the upper reaches

El Edillo esconde la vista al otro lado

the top of the hill hides the view of the other side

Un mirador en el camino. Esles abajo a la izq y Lloreda hacia la derecha

A viewpoint is a good spot for the walker to stop and look back down at Esles below and Lloreda to the right

Me acerqué al collado de Edillo en lugar de subir a la parte de arriba, ya que hay una bajada al otro lado si uno quiere seguir hace las peñas. El cambio de terreno es evidente

I made my way to a col instead of going to the top of the hill as you have to go down before you can think about going up to the peaks. The geological change is clear to see

Al pie de la bajada se ve el picón de Marmojo a la izquierda del comienzo de la subida a las Enguinzas

At the bottom of the trail this is the view to the left, where the path up to the Enguinzas starts

Pero seguí bajando directamente por una senda hasta las cabañas que se ven en la foto y continué de frente, sorteando alambres y un arroyo con ausencia de senderos

But I carried on downhill via a pathway past the huts in the photo, and down through pastures, negotiating fences and a stream - not a path in sight now

Tuve que resguardarme cinco minutos cuando empezaba a llover, y luego rodeé la montaña para llegar a la cima por sendero sorprendentemente poco definido 

I had to shelter five minutes when it started raining and then I walked round the foot of the mountain and made my way up to the top via a surprisingly indistinct path

Desde arriba se veían los Pozos de Noja al NO.  Son embalses construidos a principios del siglo XX para suministrar electricidad a la zona de Liérganes.

From the summit you can see two pools to the NW. They were built at the beginning of the 20th century as part of a hydraulic plant.

 La Peña de los Lobos (izq) es un poco más baja que Las Enguinzas. Esquenta (Peña Herrera) a la derecha es más alta aunque no me lo parecía - todo lo contrario a lo que suele pasar. Hace un año (¿ya?) vistamos estas dos 

Peña de los Lobos (left) is a little lower than Las Enguinzas. Esquenta, a slightly higher peak, on the right is actually higher, though it didn't seem like it today. Ten years ago (how time flies) we visited these two

Barruntaba más lluvia así que no quedé demasiado tiempo arriba y bajé en dirección al Pozo de Arriba                 It looked as if more rain was on the way, so I didn't stay for too long and went down towards the higher of the two pools 

Las Enguinzas se ven a la derecha. 

Han montado un columpio grande al lado del Pozo. Tanto el fin de semana anterior como hoy había gente que se habían acercado en coche a verlo/probarlo/hacer un selfie...

The Enguinzas is on the right. 

They've set up a giant swing near the pool. Both last week and today there were people who'd driven up to see it/try it out/take a selfie...

Espero que hayan disfrutado de la vista hacia la costa

Bajé por otro camino a Esles - las cabañas ocasionales son lo único que rompe la monotonía del paisaje víctima de la tala de árboles en el pasado.

I returned to Esles by a different route - the occasional stone huts are the only thing that breaks the monotony of the treeless landscape.

Salvo estas Tudancas y las vistas de la costa hacia el norte

Save for this local breed of cattle and the views of the coast to the north

La bajada es muy gradual hasta que estamos a la altura de Lloreda, cuando comenzamos a notar el descenso al valle. 

You only lose elevation very gradually until you go past Lloreda, when the descent into the valley really begins

En el pasado he subido a Las Enguinzas desde Rubalcaba y Mirones en el valle del Miera y el paisaje es  más llamativo.  Pero ya que habíamos andado por Miera hace poco, me apetecía la perspectiva distinta que da el valle de Cayón.

The approach to the Enguinzas is generally made from the Miera valley to the east, and the landscape is also more interesting. But as we'd done a hike on the Miera side recently, a change in perspective felt appropriate.

Salimos desde el suroeste, cerca de los Pozos de Noja

We set off from the south-east

Pasamos cerca de cabañas abandonadas, por terreno embarrado, pero sin vernos envueltos en la niebla que subía desde abajo 

We came across abandoned huts and muddy paths but fortunately weren't enveloped by the clouds coming up from the valleys below

Anduvimos por el hoyo que separa Peña Pelada y el Castrejón

El paisaje se volvía más agreste, y el sendero demasiado incómodo para seguir por la vegetación crecida

The path we were following was invaded by undergrowth so we had to make our way through the fern-covered hillside as best we could

Eventually a path that enabled us to get round one of several depressions

We scattered a herd of goats as we went

y volvimos a terreno herboso

and found ourselves back on a grassy hillside

Then a path taken on a previous walk

La otra vez que vine por aquí continuamos a la Peña de los Lobos (centro-izq)

Last time here we carried on up to the mountain centre-left

Pero hoy giramos hacia el Hoyo Castrejón

But today we turned off to the Castrejón Depression

La lluvia de la semana pasada había convertido algunas zonas en un lodazal

The previous days' rain meant it was impossible to avoid the mud in some stretches

We reached the end of the depression

y volvimos por donde habíamos venido, aunque ahora sin nubes que impidiesen ver la costa

and returned the way we'd come, though now without clouds blocking the view of the coast

Rodeando la Tabla/Circling the Table

 

Una ruta de corta distancia: salimos de la estación de esquí de Brañavieja, siguiendo la pista que sube hace el sur. La dejamos por seguir campo a través por senderos entre el brezo                                                                    A relatively short walk: from the Brañavieja ski station we followed a trail that heads south, leaving it to continue along paths and through the heather

A medida que subíamos encontramos restos de un viejo teleférico 

As we ascended we came across signs of the old chairlift

En el Cueto de la Horcada estamos aproximadamente en el punto medio de la Sierra del Cordel. Miramos hacia el oeste, con la Tabla muy cerca, a la misma altura que nosotros

The Cueto de la Horcada is roughly halfway along the Cordel range. Just over to the west, the Tabla summit is at exactly the same elevation

Eastwards lie peaks Iján and Cordel

El plan es rodear la Horcada y la Tabla por el norte, así que bajamos por el este hasta un punto en que podemos seguir una senda hacia la izquierda

The idea we have is to go round the Horcada and Tabla on the north side, so we head down to the east and find a path that'll take us to the left

Sin perder demasiada altitud cruzamos hasta la base de las rocas enfrente

Without losing too much height we cross over to the opposite side

Ahora toca subir unos doscientos metros por una ladera relativamente tendida

We now have to clamber up the mountainside to the west of the Tabla

y llegamos arriba donde paramos a almorzar mirando hacia el Cornón

and once we get to the top we stop for a bite to eat, looking towards Cornón

Picos de Europa

Bajamos en diagonal, primero por brezo

We make our way down diagonally - at first a pleasant walk through the heather

y más tarde tuvimos que vérnoslas con la retama, antes de conectar con un viejo camino del teleférico que no estaba del todo invadido por la vegetación

but later we came up against the dreaded broom. Thankfully we were later able to follow the old ski lift access route, which wasn't totally overgrown, and get to the bottom of the hill.
