Tenía pendiente volver al Macizo de Arria y recorrer un sendero que descubrí en mi ultima visita. Me apetecía explorar la zona un poco haciendo un circuito y bajando por el Collado Tolaco.
I'd been meaning to go back to the Arria massif and follow the path that I discovered on my last visit to the area. This would take me to a pass from where I'd explore the pasturelands (Puerto) and do a circular walk.
Seguí pues el camino que va hacia el NE por encima del cementerio de Lafuente y que se coge un la primera curva de la carretera que sube a Burió. Casi en seguida tomamos el camino empedrado que sube a la izquierda. Una vez superada la primera parte, el sendero ascienda de forma mucho más suave y disfrutamos de la sugestiva imagen delante de nosotros de la Peña Abidules.
So I took the path that heads NE above Lafuente's cemetery. A road branches off to the right at the first bend in the road up to Burió and almost immediately we take a stony climb up to the left. It levels out a bit and we walk towards the striking Peña Abidules mountain.

Tardamos una media hora en situarnos debajo de esta roca con un árbol en su cima. En ese punto cambiamos el rumbo y el sendero se pone más empinado y subimos zigzeando.
After half an hour's walk we are beneath the rock with a tree sticking out from its top. That's where we change direction and the path gets steeper as we ascend in zigzags.
Más de una vez creo que estamos cerca de llegar arriba pero en cada ocasión la senda vira hacia la derecha y tardamos otra media hora en nuestra subida.
More than once I think we're approaching the top but each time the path veers off to the right and altogether we spend another half an hour on the climb.

Enseguida estamos en el Collado. Hay dos cabañas encima de una dolina que dejamos a nuestra derecha
These are the Arria pasturelands. We keep straight ahead, leaving these two stone huts (and the doline behind them) on our right.
Cogemos un sendero que bordea una segunda hoya que esconde otra cabaña en ruinas más abajo, y ésta en la ladera.
We pick up a path that flanks a second depression, with another abandoned hut hidden from view down below, and this one on the side.

A partir de ahí el sendero empieza a bajar hacia una gran depresión que hay a la derecha y cuando vira a la derecha lo dejo y sigo un trocho hacia el norte hasta rodear una pared rocosa a mi izquierda. Luego subo hacia el sur al otro lado de la roca y gano altitud por una ladera herbosa. Después sigo hacia arriba y hacia el oeste hasta ver una senda que invita a bajar un poco a una braña hacia el sur. Continúo el rumbo arriba hacia el oeste. Me asomo a un pequeño alto a mi izquierda y así compruebo que voy bien: enfrente está el Cueto Cucón al final de Peña Sagra.
From this point the path starts going down towards a big depression on the right, and I stop following it when it turns right. I then follow animal tracks that take me past a rock to the left before changing direction and climbing up a grassy bank. We carry on upwards to the west until we see an inviting path down to the left to some pastures. From there up the side to the west and I go southwards to check on my position: all is well, the end of the Peña Sagra range lies just opposite.
El siguiente tramo pasa por un lapiaz, pero encuentro un sendero (hacia el centro-izq.) que ayuda a avanzar.
The next part of my hike westwards takes me through a karst landscape. I find a path (centre-left) that makes progress easier.
Mantengo un rumbo hacia el oeste, siguiendo senderos donde los veo. En un momento dado creo reconocer una braña atravesada por una línea de piedras lo que significa que estoy a la altura de la Canal de Braña.
I keep going west, latching on to paths that don't take me too far away from this direction. I see a pasture over to the left with a line of stones crossing it, which I've seen on a previous excursion, so I know I'm on a level with the Canal de Braña access to the massif.

Después de pasar por otra cabaña en ruinas a la izquierda bajamos a un hoyo que tiene un charco a la derecha. Desde ahí arranca un sendero que sube casi hasta la cima del Cueto del Castillo. Las vistas están algo deterioradas por los incendios en la ladera, pero el humo no impide ver los Picos de Europa.
We pass another hut in ruins to our left then head down to another depression with a small pool to the right. A path leads up from there almost to the top of Cueto el Castillo. The views are not as good as they could be due to the smoke from the fires below, but the Picos de Europa are clearly visible.
Bajo hacia el oeste y hasta la brecha que hay entre este pico y el Pico Rocas, ligeramente más bajo. Un poco más allá está el Picu la Cueva, que tiene la misma altura que donde estoy. Detrás está el Gamonal.
I carry on straight down the other side as far as gap in the rocks between this peak and the next one, Pico Rocas, which is slightly lower.

Ya que no he gastado mucho tiempo en llegar hasta aquí decido bajar a la cabaña que está abajo en una braña en lugar de bajar directamente al collau Tolaco, que separa Pico Rocas del Picu la Cueva.
As I haven't taken long to get this far I decide to go down to the hut in the pasture down to the right instead of descending directly to the Tolaco pass.

Seguimos el sendero un rato y luego lo dejamos para bajar directamente a Burió.
We follow the path for a while then leave it to head down straight towards Burió.
Una mirada atrás a los buitres, que no paran de volar encima de nosotros y bajamos hacia unos eucaliptos. Como otras veces, no me resulta fácil encontrar una forma cómoda de llegar a la aldea, pero terminamos por conectar con una pista por la parte baja de la plantación de eucaliptos que nos lleva a Burió y la carretera de vuelta al coche.
A look back at the vultures, constantly circling above us before continuing down to some eucalyptus trees. I found it much easier to find paths up in the massif than to find one to get to the village, but we end up on the track that goes through the lower part of the eucalyptus plantation and takes us to Burió and the road down to the car.
