Making the most of a Saint's Day / ¿Para qué sirve un Santo?

St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of teaching in Spain, and that means a day off work at the end of January. What better way to celebrate than going for a walk after two weeks' rain and snow. Setting out from Lanchares in Southern Cantabria on a sunny day we took a path through the woods
Felizmente, el día festivo de la enseñanza coincidió con un día soleado, después de dos semanas de lluvia y nieve. Salimos de Lanchares, en Campoo de Yuso,  para dar una ruta circular por el Vallejo Rucándano
                                                                                           
which led us to a brook that we had to cross several times, increasingly more tricky as the tributaries from the melting snow made it ever wider
más adelante había que seguir un arroyo que se iba ensanchando a medida que seguíamos, lo que producía momentos divertidos a la hora de tener que cruzarlo

 
The water was headed towards the Alsa reservoir, seen here at the foot of Pico Jano. Water and mud were soon replaced by snow, as we made our way up to higher ground
El agua se dirigía hacia el embalse de Alsa al pie de Pico Jano. La dejamos atrás y subimos hacia la nieve

The walk down through the woods saw the deepest snow
Donde más nieve había era en el camino de vuelta por el bosque en frente de Midiajo Frío

 Leaving the trees behind we had the Ebro reservoir in front of us as we completed the walk.
Salimos del bosque y nos dirigimos otra vez hacia Lanchares con el embalse del Ebro delante.

Castro Valnera

                              

Castro Valnera - A classic to start the year, but approaching  from the east (Burgos). Possibly a last chance to see it in its virgin state, as they  plan to build a cable car up to the summit from the other side.
Quería subir Castro Valnera antes de que empiecen a construir el teleférico que alterará el paisaje irremediablemente. En lugar de comenzar desde el Portillo de Lunada como otras veces, salimos desde el lado burgalés a unos 5 km del mismo.
                              
The first 3 km are pretty flat, but when you get to El Bernacho there's a steep incline up to the collado de La Piluca, where this photo was taken from. The going wasn't easy here as snow covered most of the path - I decided there and then to return via another path you can see on the left.
Los 3 primeros kilómetros son bastante llanos, pero a partir de las cabañas del Bernacho la subida hacia el Cdo. de La Piluca desde donde se sacó esta foto se me hacía costosa ya que la nieve cubría la mayor parte del sendero - decidí volver luego por otra senda que no figura en el mapa y que se ve en la  parte izq. de la foto

From the Alto La Piluca you see Cantabria on the other side, with part of the road up to the Lunada Pass and Santander in the distance

The last part of the ascent was delicate because of the snow and ice. In fact I thought I was going to have to turn back on more than one occasion
La última parte de la ascensión fue un poco complicada a causa del hielo. De hecho pensé que iba a tener que dar la vuelta en más de una ocasión
