Hiker in the mist / A través de las nubes

How to get around the blog
Following some comments that were made to me I thought I'd better translate a couple of the links that appear in Spanish on this blog, for those of you who don't speak Spanish or simply weren't aware of the options.
i). On the left-hand side of the page, where it says "archivo del blog", that means previous entries, and it tells you how many there are per year and month {eg July (2)}.
ii). You can click on the photos to enlarge them.
iii). At the end of each entry there are one or two options available:
- "comentarios" means you can post a comment (publicar un comentario). You have to "seleccionar un perfil" ie. choose a profile, such as "cuenta de Google" = Google account. "Vista previa " gives you the chance to see how your comment will appear on the blog.
iv). At the end you can also access the main page (página principal) as well as previous entries (entradas antiguas).
Hope that clears up any misunderstandings.

I did two walks in the last week of July, but despite promising weather forecasts both could have been much more spectacular if the clouds hadn't intervened.

The first was to the Picón de los Lastreros from Bernallán, on the way up to Lunada in south-east Cantabria. This is a relatively modest walk but promised good views of Castro Valnera as well as getting me in shape for a more demanding hike in Picos de Europa.

You have to walk up the spur amidst lush geen countryside. That's the positive part - the negative is that I don't remember a walk when I've been bitten so many times by horseflies.

Looking back to where I set off from - how green was your valley Boyo?
Mirando hacia atrás - verde que te quiero verde

From the top there were decent views to the east

But cloud was swirling up from the other side, preventing me from getting a glimpse of the Canal de la Vara

Northwards you can see the Picones de Sopeña. I walked along the ridge in that direction and then crossed over to the western side when the fog moved away somewhat

I crossed over via the col on the right and walked around the hill in the centre of the shot to take a path back down to Bernallán

Before heading back I walked towards Castro Valnera, which had been completely hidden to me before due to the clouds, and was now partially visible

In spring 2008 I walked along the bottom of the valley towards the Canal de la Vara and had excellent views of Castro Valnera and one of the waterfalls formed by the melting snow

Back to 2010 and another photo of the Picones de Sopeña mountains

and finally the route I took up to the Picón de los Lastreros from the left up to the top in the centre of the photo as I headed back to the car eager to leave behind the horseflies that had only left me alone at the top of the mountain

Three days later I attempted a walk I'd had on my list for a year at least - to the highest peaks of the Eastern Massif of the Picos de Europa. A lot of the walks I've done are from two books entitled "50 hikes in the Cantabria mountains"; this one was the only one I hadn't done, so it was quite a special moment. In fact I reckon those books have been the best example of value-for-money that I can think of.

After an approach of an hour or so I reached the remains of mineworking from the 19th century. Compared to the previous walk there's not much greenery to be seen.

entrances to the mines are plentiful- I can still feel the pain from banging my head on the way
out of this one.

the next photo looks back at that part of the walk

and this one shows what lay ahead
la próxima foto muestra la siguiente parte

these goats looked on unimpressed

when I got to the collado de Valdominguero I was rewarded with a view of the Duje valley over 1000 metres below

I had to retrace my steps and climb the scree up to the col on the right of the photo before heading up to the left to reach the summit of the Pica del Jierru at over 2400 mts

the first part of the ascent after getting to the top of the scree slope

by the time I got to the summit I knew it was going to be a race against the clouds to get there before they did, and I just had time to take this photo of the neighbouring summit of the"Saddle" before clouds engulfed everything. I never even got a view of the Morra de Lechugales (the highest peak), which I'd been planning to climb. I began to contemplate having to spend several hours there, which did not appeal...

the next two photos taken from the summit give an idea of the conditions

a break in the clouds gave me a chance to get to the start of an old mining path

an occasional break in the clouds gave a glimpse of the Liébana velley way below but rather than thinking about the views I could have been enjoying, at that moment I was just pleased to have reached the path OK

looking back, the Pica del Jierru is the summit on the right and the "Saddle" the one on the left

it hadn't been worth climbing the "Saddle" so I made do with a gentle walk up to the top of the Rasa de la Inagotable

...from where the occasional break in the clouds let me see the Junciana and San Carlos, which I climbed last year

on the way down you could see the sheer drop from the top of the Rasa

this was about the last photo I could take before I was engulfed by clouds once more, but luckily not in a compromising position

one last shot of a mine shaft
y una última foto de un pozo

A shame about the clouds, but at least I didn't have to spend the night on the mountain! I'll return another day with hopefully better weather.

First day of the summer holidays and what better way to celebrate than with a walk in the mountains? Hot weather was forecast so I decided on a relatively undemanding excursion to one of the few lakes in Picos. Half an hour's walk from Sotres you get to the Vegas, which I also photographed when I went up Peña Cortés. Here the huts are still 15 mins away, at the foot of an imposing looking mountain.

From Las Vegas I couldn't resist a couple of photos of the Cortés
Un par de fotos del pico Cortés

then I turned right into the Moñetas valley - you can see it splits into two, and I had to head up the left-hand side

one or two views of the mountains up ahead

and looking back

eventually I got to the final part of the ascent

and waiting on the other side was this beautiful little lake
y al otro lado se ve el lago...

I've never seen so many tadpoles and baby newts in my life
...lleno de renaguajos y tritones

after a really relaxing time by the water I started back down

near the walk back I took there's a 700-foot deep pothole

some photos I took on the way down
unas fotos sacadas durante la bajada

and finally back to Las Vegas de Sotres and two last shots towards Pico Cortés

I noticed the Duje river had apparently dried up between the Vegas and where I'd parked and suddenly heard it again as it reappeared from an underground source
