Having been rained off the previous couple of weekends, I was determined to make the most of a dry (but windy) Saturday- but a short walk so I could get back for the England-Ireland rugby match in the afternoon. This loop around the pastures above Selaya seemed to fit the bill.

My walk took me up to the top of the valley going past many of these stone huts

The huts often have ash trees growing near. They provide welcome shade in summer on hillsides that are for the most part bare of trees unlike the valleys of central or western Cantabria.

By the time I got to the top of the valley, the wind was making conditions fairly unpleasant. I later discovered that the town an equivalent distance down the other side registered the highest wind gust speeds in the whole country that day (80mph), which will explain why I didn't bother climbing up a nearby hill for a better view of the mountains to the south
