A well-known mountain in Cantabria, Porracolina, as seen from a vantage point on the way to Asón. There had been a recent snowfall by the looks of things; my plan was to walk up from the other side.

The walk started here, where the Rolacía gorge meets the Asón Valley

The path makes its way up through a wood following the stream on the left

After a while you take a fork up to the right away from the stream and the going gets steeper. When you come out of the wood you see this stone hut.

It was a good spot to have a bite to eat and admire the mountain opposite

The path reappears at the top end of the meadow, first heading left, then changing direction and zigzagging upwards. It then goes straight up towards this rock before skirting to the right

This is where I took my next break

From here, progress became a bit more difficult because of the snow.

Así se ven desde arriba
The same huts seen from above

Porracolina came into view for the first time

Behind me, on the other side of the gorge, a mountain with a similar name: Porra de la Colina and the Picón del Fraile, which houses a military base

I decided to head N-E, leaving Porracolina behind me; the Picos de Europa are visible in the distance

After a while I had to choose between carrying on in the same direction or going back. I decided on the latter option.

Desde este punto se veía Porracolina así
I now headed towards Porracolina

Retracing my steps, I made my way up the steep incline to the summit

You can just make out the huts at the top of the gorge I came up and would go back down shortly

I stopped off again at this hut on the way down

The path continued straight down the valley

Back in the wood, the path was occasionally hidden beneath the fallen leaves, making me wonder whether I was going the right way

no eran las hojas lo único caído
the leaves weren't the only things that had fallen

but the weirdest thing was that when I got down to the stream, the water had vanished; compare this photo...

...with this other one I took in the morning in the same place, zooming in on the water falling from the rocks. I'd be grateful for any explanation.

The last photo is taken from the same spot as the first, on the drive home at dusk, looking towards Peña Herrera and Las Enguinzas, which were the subject of the previous post

Behind/Detrás de Las Enguinzas

Las Enguinzas lies due south of Santander. This is how it looks from La Peña de los Lobos, one of the peaks that are hidden by it when viewed from the city. The coast can be seen  in the background.

It was a gorgeous sunny day - not warm enough for Monty to want to take a cool bath though

We followed a beautiful old stone track built around the 17th century to transport wood down from the hillsides to the foundries in nearby towns where cannons were made

This old hut didn't stand the test of time so well

Not looking too good inside either...
Tampoco pintaba muy bien por dentro

The next stop was this 250-year-old structure for storing ice, which was needed for treating burns suffered by foundry workers

Stalactites had formed from the ceiling

Moving on up the hillside we enjoyed glorious views, many of which brought back memories of walks in more recent history, for instance the steep ascent up to Peña Rocías.

As we neared our objective, the snow-capped peaks of Peña Labra and Peña Sagra came into view

Further to the south lay Peña Herrera, and we couldn't resist the temptation

Half an hour later we were on the summit of Peña Herrera.  Las Enguinzas seemed to me to be lower than this neighbouring peak. From this angle one of the pools to the NW of Las Enguinzas is visible.

We returned to Mirones following the same route we'd taken on the way up

Candlemas/La Candelaria

According to the superstitions of yore, "If Candlemas Day is clear and bright, winter will have another bite". Well Sunday was certainly a lovely day - we'll see what happens over the next few weeks...but we're only halfway through the season after all. The berries left on this sprig of holly would appear to show that there'll be food enough for the birds when inclement weather comes. In the background lies Los Tojos, whence I sallied forth hopeful of a sunny day after all the rain and hail of late.

Blue skies were in evidence when I got to Tambuey; you can see the snow-covered mountains near Castro Valnera in the distance, while straight ahead is the ridge towards Mediajo Buelna

Monty always on the look-out. According to superstition, on Candlemas Day bears and wolves come out of their lairs to see what the weather's doing. We didn't see either, though Monty did chase a fox up the slopes.
