Los Campanarios

Muchas de las caminatas que arrancan en los Collados del Asón se acercan al Alto de la Posadía, que da vista al poljé de Brenavinto. En esta ocasión seguimos de frente y lo bordeamos por la derecha hasta el final
A popular starting point for walks are the Collados del Asón. From there you don't take long to get to the Brenavinto polje (karst field). On other occasions we just see it from above, but today we walked down the path and followed it to the other end

A nuestra izquierda están los Campanarios, que visitaremos más tarde. La cima no se ve desde aquí

From the other end of the polje, looking back:

Cruzamos hasta el lado de la izquierda, pasando cerca de los meandros de un arroyo

We crossed over to the other side, glimpsing the meandering stream

A medida que subíamos, éste se apreciaba más claramente; al fondo Porra la Colina

As we got higher it became more easily recognisable, with Porra la Colina in the background

Tenía ganas de reencontrarme con este bosque en el monte Llusías; subí por aquí hace 16 años, cuando estaban empezando a balizar el sendero de Hondojón, que ahora pisábamos

I hadn't been up through this lovely wooded hillside since 2008

Cerca del collado me sorprendió encontrar narcisos

Near the top I was surprised to find daffodils

Y al llegar arriba nos recibió esta vista bonita

And there was a lovely view when we came out onto the col

El Pozo (de la Cabaña del Pozo)

Nos acercamos al Cerro Largo para observar el circo de glaciar de cerca. Enfrente está la base militar en el Picón del Fraile

We walked across to slightly higher ground to see glacier cirque up close. The dome that looks like a golf ball is a military base. 

Al izquierda de Porra la Colina, ahora vemos Porracolina (los nombres se parecen, pero son dos cimas distintas)

Beyond the Porra la Colina, we can now see the similarly sounding Porracolina (slightly lower elevation but a much more interesting walk up)

Volvimos a la Cabaña del Pozo y seguimos adelante hacia los Campanarios (izq)

Decidí explorar la zona un poco. La ruta de hoy es una forma más cómoda de llegar a la cima de los Campanarios que subir por el Coladero, que buscábamos sin éxito en una excursión anterior.

I decided to explore the area a bit. The highest point of these cliffs is obviously easier to get to the way we came today than on a previous walk, when we failed to find the entrance to the gap between them. This is where we would have come out.

Volvimos hacia el sendero balizado de Hodojón; se ve Peña Lusa a la izquierda

I walked back along the top (with Peña Lusa away to the left)

Qué sitio más majo tienen estos caballos para pastar ¡hoy por lo menos, con temperatura muy suave!
We rejoined the route that circles the Campanarios

Bajamos por un sendero entretenido hasta el fondo del valle

and made our way down an entertaining path to the bottom of the valley 

Me llamó la atención el verde de estos árboles

I was struck by the vivid colours of the trees in leaf

Quien construyó esta cabaña evidentemente contaba con que ya no quedaban rocas para caer

Whoever built this stone hut was obviously banking on lightning not striking twice!

Después de la lluvia/ After the rain

Las lluvias de la Semana Santa han sido un feliz acontecimiento. Los embalses en Huelva están ahora por encima del 50% (más que el nivel de los cántabros).  Coincidió el final de este episodio con el principio de nuestra estancia en la Sierra de Aracena y el campo se veía muy verde y lleno de vida.

After the Easter rains the reservoirs in Huelva are over half-full. Good news indeed for a region threatened by drought. Our arrival in the sierra there coincided with the last days of wet weather and the countryside was green and full of life.

Predominan los alcornoques, pero las formas de algunos castaños me chiflan

The cork oaks predominated on the first walk, but I just love the contortions some chestnut trees seem to adopt

Creo que no había visto antes ninguna cantera de mármol -aunque está abandonada por encontrarse en un parque natural

I don't remember having seen a marble quarry before, though this one was abandoned owing to its location within the natural park

La niebla me daba la bienvenida al acercarme a Valdelarco

Mist shrouded the approaches to Valdelarco

y solo se dejaba ver la mitad del pueblo. Según me contaron, durante la Guerra de la Independencia en el XIX, las tropas francesas no se dieron cuenta de que existía porque se encontraba ocultado debajo de un manto parecido cuando se asomaron a una colina cercana

and at first only the lower part of the village was visible. Apparently, during the Peninsular War in the early 19th century the French troops didn't realise the place was there as fog made it invisible from the neighbouring hills

así se veía al alejarme por otro camino

but was still hovering overhead as I took my leave

Tuve que bajar al barranco Dundún y vadear el arroyo. Me gustaba ver que venía con bastante agua

At the foot of a ravine I had the unexpected problem of locating a suitable place to cross the stream. Good to see a healthy flow

Y la subida hacia Navahermosa para terminar esta ruta 

And later up to Navahermosa to end the walk

Otro día hicimos un par de rutas cortas cerca de Santa Ana la Real y tuvimos la suerte de ver los chorros de Joyarancón como no se ven desde hace muchos años

Another day we did a couple of short walks near Santa Ana and were lucky enough to see this waterfall as it's not often seen nowadays

Una cosa que me llamaba la atención era fincas privadas y cercadas que imposibilitaban desviarse de la ruta preestablecida. No sé si las cámaras de vigilancia son el resultado de un exceso de celo de los dueños de la propiedad o por una falta de de escrúpulos de algunos de los paisanos 

One thing that drew my attention was the number of gates and fences closing off private estates. I don't know whether the video-cameras, as seen here, are a sign of overzealous landlords or of some unscrupulous locals in search of olives or chestnuts

Empecé a hartarme de ver estas palabras

I started to get fed up with these words

Por lo menos estos carteles mostraban algo de originalidad

At least these showed some originality

Total que habría que mantenerme en las pistas y senderos delimitados

The upshot was that I had to keep to the trails and signposted paths

En la última excursión que hice destacaban los castaños

On the last walk pride of place went to the chestnut trees

las jaras y pinos también estaban presentes

Las formas de los castaños todavía sin hojas me hacen imaginar gigantes patrullando el campo

These chestnut trees still not in leaf make me imagine giants patrolling the countryside
