Desde entonces he subido a la Porra de Mortillano tres veces, pero lo que nunca había visto de cerca son los dos porros (picones) que separan las cimas de Mortillano y Rocías. A la vez, me apetecía comprobar si se podía llegar a esa zona desde el aparcamiento pequeño 4kms antes de llegar a los Collados del Asón. Llevaba algún tiempo con este plan, y en el último momento pensé que sería también una oportunidad de volver a pisar una cumbre que no pensaba que visitara de nuevo.
Well over 20 years ago I made the steep walk up to Peña Rocías from a village a kilometre below. That day I'd also intended to go to nearby peak Mortillano, but it started snowing, so I retreated down the slope. In doing so I didn't get to see two features of the terrain; hump-like outcrops called the Porros de Mortillano, between the two main peaks. Since then I've been up Mortillano three times from another direction but had always had a trip to the Porros at the back of my mind. So when it occurred to me to explore an approach from higher up the Asón valley, the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone presented itself. And while I was at it, a return to Peña Rocías might be on the cards...

Así que empezamos a subir suavemente por encima del parking y aunque no hay sendero propiamente dicho, se intuye que en algún momento personas o animales han transitado por la zona para franquear el farallón cercano y llegar a las pocas zonas de pasto en esas laderas y hemos podido progresar sin demasiada dificultad
So two friends and I set off from above the tiny car park by the roadside, and although there's no path to speak of, there are signs that people or animals have made their way up the hillside at some point in time, following the cliff-face to the right towards the few pastures higher up. Anyway, we managed to make headway without too much difficulty.

We came up by the cliff-face and judging by the ground, goats spend a lot of time here
Más tarde se hacía más fácil andar y constatamos presencia humana: un muro, luego una cabaña, y poco después hasta un joven cabrero, que subía con sus perros
It gets easier to walk after that and we came across signs of life: a wall, a stone hut and even a young goatherd, who came by with his dogs

En este lugar nace un estrato que facilita el progreso al caminante. Me dio ilusión, ya que en mi última subida por esta ladera había conectado con el mismo estrato más arriba, y en aquel entonces me preguntaba dónde había arrancado.
This is where the walker's lot becomes straightforward thanks to a stratum that leads up the mountainside like a highway. I'd seen this last time I was in the area, but from higher up, so it was satisfying to be able to see where it began

We caught up with the goats when we reached a beech copse, where I'd changed direction 5 years ago on my way up to Mortillano
Seguimos subiendo por el estrato hasta llegar a una zona más abrupta
We carried on up the stratum till the landscape became more rugged
En primer lugar confundí este picón con uno de los porros, y nos dirigimos hacia él. Resultó no ser lo que pensaba, pero me encantaba su forma, y gracias a prestarlo tanta atención pudimos encontrar un camino de vuelta expeditivo
At first I thought this outcrop was one of the porros, and we made our way towards it. It turned out not to be, but I was taken by its shape, and remembering what it looked like was to help guide us on our way back
Por fin ¡los Porros de verdad!
At last, the Porros de Mortillano stood before us!

....y el segundo por el este, llegando al hoyo de Cantiscuela, viendo Peña Rocías al otro lado

...and the second via the east, reaching the Cantiscuela depression and seeing Peña Rocías on the other side

La subida a la cima nos resultó dura, pero felizmente no hay que sortear el lapiaz que recuerdo de mi anterior visita
The ascent to the summit was tough going, but fortunately we didn't have to negotiate the more difficult karst landscape I came up against last time I was here

It's a large summit, and there's still a bit of a walk across the limestone pavement to reach the highest point

Going back down to the depression
En lugar de volver por donde vinimos, rodeando el hoyo, salimos a la derecha
Instead of returning the way we came, making our way round the depression, we exited stage right
Un lapiaz impide seguir el mismo contorno así que subimos ligeramente y vimos enfrente el picón bonito de la cima plana. No veíamos si había algún corte rocoso en el camino hasta él pero probamos a ver
The karst terrain made staying at the same elevation as we headed south impossible, so we climbed up a few metres and were rewarded with a view of the outcrop we'd gone by earlier on. We couldn't tell whether there was a sheer drop on the way towards it, but it was worth trying

Felizmente, no había pasos comprometidos, y pudimos progresar por la ladera
Happily, there were no difficulties along the way, and we were able to walk round the mountainside

Rápidamente enlazamos con el camino de la ida, y empezamos una bajada larga pero tranquila
We soon connected up with the outward route, and began a long but uncomplicated descent

When we got El Rellano we changed direction and took a path that would bring us out onto the road - the same path I'd set off along 5 years ago

Almost ten hours spent on the hike, with beautiful countryside to admire and fulfilling a goal. What more could you want?
