Valderredible / Al sur de Cantabria

A rare visit for me to the southernmost part of Cantabria. I set off from Polientes, the main town in Valderredible, crossing over the Ebro river. Turning right, I took the GR-99 route, which follows the river, but unfortunately only occasionally affords glimpses of the water.

No recuerdo si he estado alguna vez en Polientes, pero fue el comienzo de un largo paseo que hice aprovechando el día festivo en el trabajo. Crucé el Ebro para seguir el GR-99, que remonta el curso del río, pero algo alejado de la orilla, lo que impide que el caminante disfrute mucho del mismo

In the first village I went through, Rebollar, I was greeted by a couple of mastiffs; this one in particular had a lovely attitude

Llegué al primer pueblo, Rebollar, donde me dieron la bienvenida un par de mastines;  este en particular me parecía encantador 

On the way out of the village I renew my acquaintance with the Ebro

Al salir del pueblo me encontré de nuevo con el Ebro

In Sobrepeña I head south, leaving the GR-99 route and following the PR -S.38

I walked back towards the east, spying this little waterfall on the way

The signposts bear testimony to the weather conditions

La subida al Páramo está balizada como PR- S.38, aunque no sé cuánto durarán estas señalizaciones..

I pass through Montecillo before returning to Sobrepeña and completing the PR - S.38

This is the fountain on the west side of the village, which I pass as I get back on the original trail (the PR - S.37)

Esta es la fuente en el extremo occidental del pueblo, que veo al reengancharme a la ruta original (la PR - S.37). Ya no vamos por la GR-99.

The walk again briefly goes alongside the river before giving it a wide berth. 

El camino se acerca brevemente al río antes de separarse 

We come out onto the road and turn left. Shortly afterwards we catch up with the river again, crossing it to get to La Puente del Valle

Salimos a la carretera y vamos a la izquierda. Poco después conectamos otra vez con el Ebro. Cruzamos el río para acceder a La Puente Del Valle

We now take a track that leads from the church to the cemetery, which takes us to a farm. Here we must cross the stream on our left and walk a little way along the bank before crossing over again. Not long after that we cross the stream again and join a trail that gradually takes us up through an oak wood

En este pueblo cogemos un camino que va al lado de un arroyo que seguimos hacia el norte. Terminamos en la margen derecha subiendo por un rebollar

It's a pleasant walk that leads to the semi-abandoned village of Quintanas Olmo. Thereafter we follow a road north that soon changes direction and we see the village again as we go south

Es un tramo bonito que acaba en el pueblo semi-abandonado de Quintanas Olmo. Después vamos por la carretera y vemos el último pueblo enfrente

I'm suddenly surprised by a large group of vultures that appear from nowhere and hover above me for a few minutes

Me sorprenden un grupo de buitres que aparecen de la nada y me parecen observar durante unos minutos

Next up is Arantiones. The road goes down through the village. We follow it for a while then, just after passing a shrine we take a trail to the left through a wood comprising deciduous and evergreen trees

La carretera pasa por el pueblo de Arantiones. La seguimos un rato hacia abajo, y luego, poco después de pasar al lado de un humilladero, la dejamos para coger una pista a la izquierda que nos llevará a Polientes, atravesando un bosque mixto de árboles de hoja caduca y perenne

There are also views across to the scarp we walked along earlier in the day

De vez en cuando vemos enfrente el escarpe que visitamos antes

The trail takes us down into Polientes just as the sun is going down, and we get one last glimpse of the Ebro as flows east

Llegué a Polientes cuando se ponía el sol, y se me ofreció una última vista del Ebro

The PR - S.37 signposts that have suddenly appeared, lead us down into the square, and a longish walk comes to a satisfying close.

Bajamos a la plaza del pueblo y así acabamos una ruta agradable.

El pueblo de la foto / the village in the photo

En estos tiempos difíciles que estamos viviendo ¿cómo conciliar el no querer arriesgar un accidente en un momento en que el sistema de sanidad está bajo mucha presión con el anhelo de hacer ejercicio en un entorno bello? Ninguna actividad está exenta de riesgo, pero la salud mental debe cuidarse...  Esta ruta por pistas y senderos en un día festivo con presagio de buen tiempo me parecía una solución adecuada.

Me habían regalado un cartel con una foto de un pueblo de Liébana. Por la iglesia lo identifiqué como Perrozo, cerca de Cabezón. De ahí a encontrar este paseo no tardé mucho.

I was given a poster showing a village in SW Cantabria. Thanks to the church I identified it as Perrozo, near Cabezón de Liébana. I decided to combine a visit to the village with a walk in the area. 

Al final del pueblo subí hacia el sur por una pista, pasando cerca de una posada. Después de rodear una finca y en una larga subida recta cogí el ramal de la derecha en una bifurcación. Subí un poco más antes de cambiar de dirección y dirigirme hacia el oeste por una pista llana.

At the end of the village I took the track up to the south. After ignoring a couple of trails off to the right, I passed a fenced off property, coming to a lengthy stretch going straight uphill. At a fork I carried on up the right-hand track. This levelled out not long afterwards, changing direction and heading west.

En una ligera subida encontré el primero de muchos árboles caídos en la ruta. Este me impedía el paso por lo que había que trepar por el talud y pasar por el tronco partido

I came across the first of many fallen trees I was to see. This one completely blocked the way, and I had to clamber up the bank and get past the snapped trunk that way

Casi en seguida otro tronco con aspecto llamativo parecía aguardar mi llegada

Not far ahead another tree trunk seemed to lay in wait for me

La pista desciende y la dejé para seguir un sendero a la izquierda que pasa por un bosque. Al principio no está demasiado definido pero pronto se hace más claro. Ahora vamos hacia el SE y a la derecha se ven Peñas Cigal y Córcina.

The track eventually starts going downhill and I turned off it to take a path to the left through a wood. It's not so clear at first but soon becomes easy to follow. Now we're going SE and have different mountains to admire on the right.

We get to a clearing and the top of Peña Porrera can just about be made out ahead

Al rodear la curva se ve más claramente. Dejé la pista y subí por una senda a la izquierda

Round the bend it comes more into view. I left the trail and headed up a path on the left

Al rato de caminar por la arista se entra en un robledal.  El camino es poco claro durante los próximos minutos pero no hay que alejarse demasiado de la arista 

After a bit you get to an oak wood. The path isn't very clear for the next few minutes but although you can drop down to the left it's best not to get too far from the top of the ridge  

Encontramos una pista que viene de frente y la seguimos por la ladera de la derecha. 

Because you need to get onto a trail that comes along the ridge from the opposite direction before heading down the other side (to the east)

La bajada acaba cuando salimos a otra pista más transitada, que seguimos hacia la izquierda. Terminamos por llegar a la bifurcación de la mañana y disfrutamos de las vistas de los Picos mientras bajamos a Perrozo

The downward stretch ends when we come out onto a trail that is obviously used more regularly, and which we follow to the left. We end up getting back to the fork from earlier in the day and enjoy the views of the Picos de Europa as we make our way down to Perrozo. 

Había observado por la mañana en mi paso por el Desfiladero que con el deshielo el Deva venía muy caudaloso. Paré un momento durante el viaje de vuelta para sacar una foto.

When I drove through the Hermida Gorge that morning I'd seen how much water was coming down the Deva river following the melting of all the snow from a few weeks back. I stopped a moment on the return trip to take a photo.

Miera

¿Cuántas veces habré visto la señalización a Miera camino del puerto de Lunada? En casi todas esas ocasiones he pensado que debería buscar una ruta por ahí en la margen izquierda del río. El Miera es un valle que siempre me ha gustado especialmente y llegó el día de subir a la capital de la comarca. Ese pueblo se llama La Cárcoba, y debajo de la iglesia hay un camino que sale al sur manteniendo la misma elevación durante un buen rato. Buenas vistas hacia el otro lado del valle.

I've taken the road up the beautiful Miera valley many times and often thought that I should explore the road leading off it signposted to Miera. The main village in Miera is La Cárcoba, and that's where I set off from on the first day of my Xmas holiday, heading south from below the church. Good views of the other side of the valley.

Poco después dejamos el camino y bajamos por un sendero a la izquierda que sigue un afluente del Miera, el Carcabal.  Delante van asomando las cotas que pienso subir 

Shortly afterwards you leave the lane and take a path down to the left that follows the valley to Merilla. Ahead are the hills I would be heading towards

Después de pasar las casas de La Veguilla dejo esta "ruta de los barrios merachos" y cojo la carretera hacia Merilla. Me cuesta unos minutos encontrar un sendero caso perdido que sube hacia la derecha. La foto demuestra lo poco evidente que es.

After passing a group of houses (La Veguilla), I came out onto the road that leads to Merilla. It took me a few minutes to locate the path that leads up to the right - hardly visible even in the photo

El sendero está invadido por la maleza y es un poco incómodo. Sube a una cabaña abandonada, y luego la entre zarzas hay que buscar una continuación un poco más arriba. Se pasa por un par de alambradas antes de llegar a una zona arbolada. A partir de aquí vamos subiendo de manera más fácil, manteniéndonos a la izquierda de una alambrada a que se llega al llanear el terreno un poco.

The next part is less than straightforward. The path take you up to an abandoned hut, and then through the brambles you have to get onto another indistinct path to carry on upwards. After negotiating a couple of fences you get to a wooded area. From there progress is easier, keeping to the left of a wire fence

El objetivo es evidente y simplemente se trata de buscar el mejor camino entre las rocas típicas de esta zona caliza. Aquí se ven las cuatro cotas que subí a continuación 

It's clear where you're headed now, so it's just a question of finding the easiest path up through the limestone landscape. In the photo you can see the four hills the route would take me to

Desde arriba descubrí que quedaba por lo menos una cima más alta y desgraciadamente que se acercaban las nubes desde el oeste.

From the top I discovered there was at least one hill a bit higher and unfortunately that clouds were approaching from the west

Mi ruta me llevaría hacia el norte. Habría que estar atento al tiempo

My walk would take me northwards. I'd have to keep a close watch on the weather

Seguí por la cresta por dos cotas más altas pero por ganas de hacer ejercicio únicamente ya que no había  vistas a causa de la niebla. Antes de bajar decidí acercarme a la cuarta cima, que se presentaba inexpugnable. Desde atrás se sube fácilmente. No sé si este es la cota más alta de la zona (El Castro) ya que la niebla impedía ver más allá

I carried on upwards to the north but just for the sake of it as there were no longer any views owing to the fog. Before descending I decide to carry on to the fourth hilltop, which looked impregnable. From the other side you can reach the top without difficulty. I don't know whether this is the highest point on the ridge or not as the fog made it impossible to see further

It seemed prudent to head down to the road I could see below to the east. This is the first hut I reached

Bajé por la carretera que va a Merilla y mirando atrás me llamaba la atención el contraste entre el verdor del prao y lo gris de la niebla que descendía. Paré aquí a comer algo, y justo cuando terminaba, empezaban a caer las primeras gotas.

I came out onto the road that leads down to Merilla and looking back was struck by the contrast between the greenness of the meadow and the grey fog that was making its way down the hillside. I stopped for a bite to eat and just as I was finishing the first raindrops started to fall

Volví a Veguilla y seguí las señalizaciones a Los Cerillos y de ahí por una pista entre bosque y praos para luego conectar con la carretera que sube a este punto. Luego hay que bajar hacia la derecha para regresar a La Cárcoba.

I returned to La Veguilla and followed the signposts to Los Cerillos and thereafter took a track up between woods and meadows that joins the road that leads to this crossroads. You then head down to the right to get back to La Cárcoba.

No tardaría mucho en ver los tejados del pueblo. A pesar de la lluvia constante era un paseo agradable.

Not long after the rooftops came into view. In spite of the rain it was a pleasant walk

En el valle más al este está "La capital del Mundo"(Arredondo), pero no se queda mucho más corta La Cárcoba, ya que denominan su iglesia "La catedral de Miera".  ¡Debería haber sacado una foto!                                                   As I shed my waterproofs in the doorway to the church, I saw that it is known locally as the "La Miera Cathedral". Should have taken a photo!
