Rodeando la Tabla/Circling the Table

 

Una ruta de corta distancia: salimos de la estación de esquí de Brañavieja, siguiendo la pista que sube hace el sur. La dejamos por seguir campo a través por senderos entre el brezo                                                                    A relatively short walk: from the Brañavieja ski station we followed a trail that heads south, leaving it to continue along paths and through the heather

A medida que subíamos encontramos restos de un viejo teleférico 

As we ascended we came across signs of the old chairlift

En el Cueto de la Horcada estamos aproximadamente en el punto medio de la Sierra del Cordel. Miramos hacia el oeste, con la Tabla muy cerca, a la misma altura que nosotros

The Cueto de la Horcada is roughly halfway along the Cordel range. Just over to the west, the Tabla summit is at exactly the same elevation

Hacia el este vemos el Iján y el Cordel

Eastwards lie peaks Iján and Cordel

El plan es rodear la Horcada y la Tabla por el norte, así que bajamos por el este hasta un punto en que podemos seguir una senda hacia la izquierda

The idea we have is to go round the Horcada and Tabla on the north side, so we head down to the east and find a path that'll take us to the left

Sin perder demasiada altitud cruzamos hasta la base de las rocas enfrente

Without losing too much height we cross over to the opposite side

Further north are Helgueras and Cueto Concilla

Sierra de Peña Sagra

Ahora toca subir unos doscientos metros por una ladera relativamente tendida

We now have to clamber up the mountainside to the west of the Tabla

y llegamos arriba donde paramos a almorzar mirando hacia el Cornón

and once we get to the top we stop for a bite to eat, looking towards Cornón

Picos de Europa

Bajamos en diagonal, primero por brezo

We make our way down diagonally - at first a pleasant walk through the heather

y más tarde tuvimos que vérnoslas con la retama, antes de conectar con un viejo camino del teleférico que no estaba del todo invadido por la vegetación

but later we came up against the dreaded broom. Thankfully we were later able to follow the old ski lift access route, which wasn't totally overgrown, and get to the bottom of the hill.

El otro lado del Miera/ The other side of the valley

Uno de los atractivos de ir a San Roque o a Lunada es el paso por el Valle de Miera. Conduciendo, uno no se puede permitir disfrutar plenamente de las vistas, por lo que una ruta que arranca desde el corazón del valle me apetecía mucho. Una caminata por el lado izquierda del río hace un par de inviernos me hizo pensar en hacer ésta.

To get to the starting point for some of the best hikes in Cantabria you need to drive up the Miera valley. Of course you can't fully appreciate this gorge while behind the wheel, so I was really looking forward to this walk, setting out from the heart of the valley, following on from one I did in winter from the other side of the river a couple of years back.

Agosto de 2024

Aunque estábamos a mediados de agosto no cruzamos con nadie hasta el final de la caminata.

Although it was the middle of August we didn't meet anyone till the end of the walk

Pasamos por unos praos donde pastaban burros y vacas, bordeando esta roca por debajo, 

We crossed a few fields with donkeys and cattle, going round the bottom of this cliff

La Cárcoba

Un sendero bastante largo, ameno en un principio y luego más incómodo por la vegetación que dificultaba el paso, nos llevaba por encima de Linto

The path went on for quite a while; pleasant at first and later more exacting with vegetation making progress slower. 

Cambiamos de dirección, subiendo hacia un alto, acompañados por una brisa agradable

We changed direction, walking up a hill, luckily with a nice breeze for company

A partir de este punto el paisaje cambiaba radicalmente. Delante estaba la Canal del Haya

From here the countryside changed radically; ahead of us was the so-called Beech valley

Un terreno caótico de enorme belleza

A chaotic landscape of great beauty

Había que estar atento para seguir el sendero, escondido entre la vegetación, comprobando el GPS a menudo para asegurarnos de la dirección correcta

We had to pay attention to follow the path, hidden under the vegetation, checking the GPS track all the time to make sure we were going the right way

No nos equivocamos pero se entiende por qué un grupo de maquis eligieron esta zona para esconderse en el siglo paso

We managed OK, but it was no surprise to hear that Spanish maquis chose this area for their hide-out during Franco's dictatorship

Después de mucho rato vislumbramos lo que podría ser la salida

Eventually we saw a hill that was likely to be the immediate destination

La  vegetación crecida del verano tenía su recompensa en los contrastes del color verde con la roca caliza

The exuberance of the vegetation in full summer exuberance made for slow progress, but the green provided a wonderful contrast with the colour of the limestone

Esta cabaña abandonada se encuentra en el límite este de la Canal. De construcción sólida como muchas otras que veíamos 

This abandoned hut is on the edge of the valley; solidly built like many others we saw

Subimos la cuesta que habíamos visto desde abajo y echamos una mirada hacia atrás

We climbed up the hill we'd seen from below and looked back

De repente nos encontramos en un mundo sin apenas árboles. Cruzamos hacia el punto más alto de la ruta

Suddenly we found ourselves in a world with scarcely a tree to be seen. We made our way to the highest point of the hike

La calima impedía que hubiera vistas con claridad. Apenas se distinguían el Picón del Fraile y Castro Valnera 

The hazy weather impeded good views from the top

Ahora tocaba bajar suavemente por este valle, la Canal de Bordillas

No for the gradual descent down the Bordillas valley

Hay muchas cabañas abandonadas en toda la Canal. Me resultaba triste esta evidencia de un estilo de vida que ya se acabó.                                                                                                                                                

There are many huts left to the elements in Bordillas. It's sad to see the evidence of a way of life gone for good

Estos serbales parecían haber sido plantados para marcar la separación de fincas

These mountain ash seem to have been planted to separate two properties

Encontramos lugares de gran belleza

We came across some really beautiful spots

El camino de bajada también era una construcción que da testimonio de tiempos pasados

The path down to the foot of the valley has also stood the test of time

Este tramo en particular es artesanía de gran calidad. Por desgracia somos pocos los que lo pisamos ya.

These steps in particular are testament to the care and craftsmanship of those who put them in place. Unfortunately few of us use them in today's world.

Pozo Curavacas / a mountain pool

La primera vez que supe de este pozo era cuando lo vi desde la cima de Curavacas. 
The first time I became aware of this pool was when I saw it from the top of Curavacas.

Tenía en mente visitarlo un día, y he aquí el día. Llegué a Liébana aliviado de haber dejado atrás los semáforos del Desfiladero en obras   

I'd had it in mind to visit it one day -  fast forward 14 years and I was setting off from a village in South Cantabria

Cucayo

La subida entre los hayas era agradable, por una pista que sigue el río Frío, pero salvo cuando lo cruza en Ranes no lo veía a causa de la nube baja

The cloud was lying low but there were pleasant views of the beech trees as the trail following the river headed up to the border with Castile

Una vez fuera del bosque solo se veía la rosa canina y la retama abundante

Once out of the woods though, I couldn't see much beyond the dog rose and abundant broom

Confiaba en que la nube se quitaba, y justo cuando me acercaba a la divisoria entre Cantabria y Palencia se descubrieron los pastos justo debajo de donde me encontraba. De momento, sin embargo, Peña Prieta no se dejaba ver

As I'd been hoping, the cloud lifted, just as I came to the Cantabria-Palencia border, though for the moment Peña Prieta was hidden from view

Disfruté de un cambio total de paisaje durante los próximos kilómetros, recorriendo un valle precioso donde en verano pastan ganado y caballos 

A total change of scenery for the next couple of miles through a beautiful valley flanked by mountains,  used as grazing land in the summer

As I look back, I can now see Peña Prieta

Dejé la pista, que sigue hasta los puertos de Pineda, y me sorprendió ver dos jeeps en la base de Curavacas. Bajaban los chavales que habían venido en ellos mientras yo subía las faldas bajas de la montaña
I left the trail, which carries on to the Pineda pastures, and was surprised to see a couple of jeeps at the bottom of Curavacas. The party who'd be brought in them came down past me as I made my way up the lower slopes of the mountain

Después de un par de kilómetros llegué al pozo

After a mile or so I got to the pool

y no había nadie más  

and had it all to myself

Se alimenta de agua que baja por este lado de la montaña

It's replenished by water that comes down this side of the mountain

Me quedé un buen rato en este lugar tan tranquilo y luego bajé al valle. Todavía salía la niebla de los puertos de Río Frío
After a lengthy break poolside I retraced my steps down the slope. There was clearly still cloud coming up from Río Frío

Los terneros y potrillos no se molestaban si me acercaba

The calves and foals were remarkably unfazed by my presence

Al entrar otra vez en Cantabria momentáneamente tuve la oportunidad de ver bien Peña Prieta

As I crossed into Cantabria again Peña Prieta became visible for a brief moment

Y esta vez la niebla no me impedía ver el Río Frío

At last I got to see the Frío river on my way down the trail

y en general disfrutaba de unas vistas que la nube me había impedido apreciar durante la subida:

Para concluir, una foto que saqué hace nueve años en Pico Lezna, la última vez que hice una ruta desde Cucayo, que muestra la ubicación del pozo, 700 metros debajo de la cima de Curavacas

To finish, a photo taken nine years ago from Pico Lezna, which was the last time I started a walk in Cucayo, showing where the pool lies, 700 metres below the summit of Curavacas
