Peña Castil

         My last hike of the summer was to the highest mountain of the year. The weather forecast was uncertain, but as I had a day off work I had to make the most of it. On the way up from Sotres in Asturias the clouds seemed to be threatening.
         La última excursión del verano coincidió con la subida más fuerte. La previsión meteorológica no era del todo segura, pero ya que era festivo en el trabajo había que aprovechar. Subiendo desde Sotres en Asturias las nubes amenazaban.

When we got to the abandoned huts of Las Moñas, I had my first sight of the summit of Peña Castil behind a smaller mountain

I went towards the left to see the Duje Valley the other side before continuing towards Tortorios

As we continued our way SW this group of ibex followed our progress - it reminded me of the beginning of "The Planet of the Apes"
Siguiendo en dirección SO este grupo de rebecos nos observaba - me recordaba una imagen al principio del "Planeta de los Simios"

Near the Horcada de Camburero the Naranjo de Bulnes came completely into view

Peña Castil

The Eastern Massif of the Picos: the Morra de Lechugales in the centre is exactly the same height as Peña Castil. The Picos de Cámara are at the right end (see "The last Peak" posted earlier this month)

More ibex on the way down - I had to keep an eye on Monty, as he tends to race after them as soon as he sees them, and wastes a lot of energy in the process

We stopped off at a little stream to freshen up and this little fellow hopped into view

Una ruta por El Valle Estrechu/ East Liébana

Primero, agradecer a Gonzalo Zamora que haya subido la descripción de esta ruta. Hace 5 años lo vi en uno de sus apartamentos en Cahecho, y me quedé con las ganas de conocer el pico de la Sierra de Peña Sagra que se ve en el centro de la foto, sacada en Cahecho (El Valle Estrecho): el Pico Paraes. A la izquierda está el Tumbo, también conocido como Peña Las Segás:
5 years ago I was staying in Cahecho near Potes and saw a description of this walk up to Pico Paraes, which is in the centre of the first photo, to the right of El Tumbo, taken in the same village:                                      

Es una subida muy directa, pasando por los típicos praos lebaniegos, y con vistas bonitas al fondo
A track goes straight up the hillside, taking you past the typical  meadows of the Liébana region of Cantabria, with mountains on the other side of the valley

Después de una subida bastante pindia vemos enfrente al Tumbo
It's a steep walk up, and after an hour or so you find yourself facing El Tumbo

En la base de esa peña acaba la pista y subimos en diagonal por una senda clara hacia el collado que está entre ella y el Paraes, que se ve a la derecha de la siguiente foto
The track ends here, and we followed a path that made its way diagonally up to a col between Tumbo and Pico Paraes over to the right

    

    Al llegar a esta roca enorme podemos subir hacia la izquierda para ganar el collado en seguida

    When you get to this huge rock you can turn up to the left and reach the col                                      
                                    
    A Monty le interesaba quedar en la sombra de la roca un rato - la verdad es que lo pasó bastante    mal por el sol que nos daba de lleno

Decidí volver a la senda original y subir al pico por el lado lebaniego. Había que rodearlo y luego acercarnos desde el este. Ya en la cima, se veía así el Cuernón, la cima más alta de la sierra.
I returned to the path and eventually came out onto the ridge to the east of Paraes. From the summit this was the view further along to the Cuernón, the highest peak in the Sierra de Peña Sagra

Monty no conseguía llegar a la cima por sus propios medios, así que rápidamente bajé al pie de la misma y allí almorzamos. El macizo oriental desde ese lugar.
Monty was unable to make it up to the summit without help, so we soon went down to the foot of the peak and had a bite to eat. This is what the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa looked like

El último pico / The last peak

Cierran el macizo oriental de los Picos de Europa hacia el sur los Picos de Cámara. La pista que sube desde Espinama, llanea en las Portillas del Boquejón y allí delante aparece el objetivo del día.
The Picos de Cámara lie right at the southern end of the eastern massif of the Picos de Europa. They come into sight when the track up from Espinama flattens out.

Justo detrás de mí están los otros dos Picos de Cámara, con el Jisu y Prau Cortés más hacia la derecha
