From near the upper station of the cable car from Fuente Dé towards the west stands an imposing rock called Altaiz Tower, with San Carlos Peak just behind it

We followed a path to the left of the Lloroza depression to reach the base

This little frog jumped out of the way as we walked past; there are pools nearby.

We get to the Canal San Luis path and go by Torre Altaiz on the left-hand side

A look back. In the distance Peña Sagra, and Cumbre Abenas nearer to us

There were quite a few people on the same path,  making their way up to the Colladina de las Nieves. At this point however,  near a recess in the rock we left the path and began the walk up to the summits.

There's no clear path, nor cairns to be seen at first, but heading straight up the slope we soon came across them. A look back from one of the first towards the recess in the rockface.

The best way up is to follow the patches of green up to the rock in the middle of the photo, go left to get round the rock, then head diagonally to the right of the fore-summit of San Carlos

Una mirada hacia atrás
Looking back

We avoided going up this incline to our right, which rises steeply from the base of the mountain

We soon see the cliffs that lie between San Carlos and Torre Altaiz. We make our way up to them before continuing on up to the left

Parece caótico pero no se anda mal
It looks chaotic, but there's no difficulty in this next part

Se agradece un punto de color
Nice to see a break from all the grey

We see Santa Ana to our right

The last part of the climb: rather than follow the gulley, it's easier to make your way up via the rocks to the left.

You get to this vantage point over Hoyo Oscuro, with Peña Santa behind

We move on up to the summit nearby and enjoy good views to all sides:
Towards the north. Now this is chaotic. Horcados Rojos is on the right.

The cairn marking the summit of Torre Altaiz is below us on the left, just where the track leading to the cable car station comes into view.

Curavacas, Peña Prieta, Espigüete
The mountains of Palencia

Pico de Padiorna, where the people we saw earlier on were headed. Visibility was good enough to see the plains of Castile in the distance.

We return to a spot about 50 metres below the cliffs between San Carlos and Torre Altaiz and climb up this narrow gulley to get to the lower summit

The area between two depressions: Jou Sin Tierra on the left and Jou de Lloroza on the right. Mining used to take place here.

The gulley we went up to get to Torre Altaiz

y por aquí bajamos
and the way we came down

The walk back was less pleasant, as the temperature was rising fast and there was no breeze.
