Saturday: a cold sunny morning. Had to make the most of it, so I returned to an area I'd done a short walk in four months ago. As then, I left the car in Rubalcaba, but this time walked a short distance southwards along the main road before heading up right towards El Rellano. Up above, Peña Pelada: a modest peak but very abrupt in appearance.
Sábado: mañana fría pero soleada que había que aprovechar. Volví a Rubalcaba, donde había hecho una caminata hace cuatro meses. Después de aparcar donde "La cruz" seguí por la carretera un par de minutos, antes de subir a la derecha hacia el barrio de El Rellano. Arriba se veía Peña Pelada: modesta en elevación pero abrupto en apariencia.
Ignore a road branching off to the right, and carry on to the east. The road doubles back towards the foot of the rocky fortresslike outcrop. Where it levels off after a crossroads (keep right) I took a short cut up to the left before coming back out on it further up. On the other side of the Miera valley are Pico Levante (centre) and Peña Coba (right), where I went in October.
Hay que seguir el camino principal, ignorando otro que sale a la derecha. Más adelante la carretera cambia de dirección y gira hacia la derecha para ir subiendo hacia la base de la peña. Donde empieza a llanear cogí un atajo hacia la izquierda para salir más tarde a la misma carretera más arriba. Al otro lado del Miera se ven el Pico Levante (centro) y Peña Coba (derecha) donde andaba en octubre.
Where the road ends, go through a gate, past a stone hut and up the slope bearing right to get behind Peña Pelada (from the east). The ascent is obvious, up to the right via a clear grassy area (right of photo). From there you follow a faint path between the rocks up to the left.
Donde se acaba la carretera, atraviesa una verja, pasando al lado de una cabaña para luego subir por la cuesta hacia la derecha para alcanzar la base de Peña Pelada por detrás (el este). La subida es evidente, por una zona herbosa (a la derecha de la foto). Desde allí se sigue un sendero poco marcado entre las rocas hacia la izquierda.

You soon get to the higher of the two peaks of Peña Pelada, from where I looked back to the lower one.

You have to take care when descending to the south-east. Opposite is El Castrejón, which will be the next part of the walk.

I went down diagonally to the left following a rough path, but when it seemed to be keeping the same elevation I zigzagged down to the right, where there seemed to be more grass and fewer rocks

El Castrejón is about 50 metres higher than Peña Pelada, seen here from the summit. The contrast between the two is very stark

Bajo hacia el noroeste; en frente se ven las casas de La Pereda, adonde me dirijo. Este parte de la caminata resultó ser la más incómoda, por la falta de senderos, la aulaga, rocas escondidas y sumideros ocasionales. Terminé bajando a la derecha de la roca que se ve justo delante.

I took the track down to Rubalcaba, partly to see the two peaks from across the way, but if there's a next time I'll return by going round Peña Pelada.
