La Sierra del Cordel

No conservo fotos de la última vez que hice una excursión a esta sierra, así que debe de haber sido antes de 2007 cuando hice un recorrido por las cumbres que quedan al norte de Brañavieja. Que haya pasado tanto tiempo da fé de las otras muchas posibilidades que me ha brindado la orografía de Cantabria y las provincias limítrofes.

I hadn't been up this way for several years - not since I started taking photos on my hikes in fact. Just goes to show how many options there are in this and neighbouring provinces.

La niebla nos había acompañado hasta pasado Espinilla, y una vez comenzada la marcha, mientras subíamos por la ladera, la veíamos como un manto sobre El Valle de Campoo. 

We didn't get above the low-lying cloud till we were on the road up to the ski-station, and once we'd set off up the slope, we could see it covering the Campoo valley we'd driven up.

La nieva caída hace unos días se ha desvanecido en su mayor parte

The snow that has fallen recently has all but disappeared

Después de llegar al collado Cuencajén subimos hacia la derecha

From the Cuencajén pass we headed up right

Habíamos estado en frente del Cuchillón cuando empezamos a andar, y ahora se asoma otra vez

We'd been opposite Cuchillón (the big blade) when we started walking and now it came into view once more

Después de bajar al collado otra vez y comer, algunos decidimos subir al Iján. Ahora encontramos algo más de nieve

After going back down to Cuencajén again, and having a bite to eat, some of us decided to walk up to Iján. We found a bit more snow here

Otoño en un municipio nuevo/a morning woodland walk

Una pequeña presa a la salida de San Martín de Aguayo, un pueblo que nunca había visitado

A small dam at the end of the village I started my walk in

La ruta de hoy era una vuelta corta por el bosque al sur del pueblo

Today's excursion was a short walk in the woods to the south of San Martín de Aguayo

Sigo el GR-74 durante un km por un hayedo luciendo los colores de otoño

I found myself on the GR-74 long-distance route for a kilometre as I made my way up through the beech trees 

Después de dejar el GR pasamos una portilla, entramos en un coto de caza y seguimos subiendo. 

After leaving the GR we carried on up through a game reserve

Salimos del bosque a terreno abierto con vistas al embalse del Ebro 

and then came out of the woods onto open ground, overlooking the Ebro reservoir

Al iniciar la bajada veo un par de edificios que creo corresponden a San Martín

As we begin the walk down I see a couple of buildings that must indicate the village we set off from

La mayor parte del bosque es joven, pero hay alguna haya más vieja

There are one or two older beech trees

Había oido disparos así que me alegré de salir del coto, pero poco después vimos dos ciervos que iban corrieron hacia la zona peligrosa. 

I had heard gunshots so was happy to leave the game reserve, but not long afterwards we two deer heading past us in the wrong direction

La parte final de la bajada sigue el arroyo del Hondal del Agua

The last part of the walk back down follows a stream

Y nos lleva de nuevo a San Martín de Aguayo

And takes us back to San Martín de Aguayo

On the other side of the river / Al otro lado del puente

The aim of this hike was to explore the woods on the southern side of an old stone bridge I came across during a walk in March. In Spring the area is to be avoided so as not to disturb any bears that may be breeding so November seemed like a good time. Setting off from a village an hour's walk away I walked down to the river and followed a path heading upstream.

Durante un paseo por la PR-S85 en marzo por el lado izquierdo del Híjar me llamó la atención un puente que invitaba a descubrir la ladera de enfrente. En la primavera se aconseja no adentrarse en el bosque para no molestar a los osos pero el mes de noviembre parecía un momento propicio.

The path up the other side wasn't as easy to find as I'd imagined, and the cairns I followed took me away from the route shown on my map 

El sendero que figuraba en el mapa que estaba usando no era tan evidente como había esperado, pero encontré unos hitos que jalonaban la ladera en diagonal

I soon came out onto open grazing land and carried on uphill.

No tardé un salir del bosque y descubrir una zona de pastoreo. Seguí cuesta arriba.

I passed the ruins of an old stone hut

Pasé por delante de unas ruinas

and by now had a decent view of the Cordel range

y ya tenía buenas vistas de la Sierra del Cordel

Looking back from the point where I reached a track that was where it was supposed to be

Llegué a una pista que el mapa acertaba a dibujar y eché una mirada hacia atrás

At 1500 metres most of the deciduous trees had lost their leaves, but I decided to follow this trail round the hillside

Estaba a 1500 metros de altura, y la mayoría de los árboles caducos ya se habían desprendido de sus hojas, pero decidé explorar la zona un poco; primero seguí este camino que rodea la ladera

It stops when it comes to this brook coming down the hillside

No continúa más allá de este arroyo

I decided to explore the spot a little more, and took a path down to other tributaries of the Híjar river

Justo antes de ese punto unos hitos indican una senda que baja a otros afluentes del Híjar; lógicamente no pude resistir echar un vistazo

Back up on the trail I retraced my steps. At first I thought what I saw in front of me was mistletoe, but then realised it was a beech, with clusters of tightly packed twigs at the end of some of the branches. I don't recall having noticed this before, but there were one or two examples further on.

Ya de vuelta al camino regresé hacia la pista. A primera vista lo que veía en este árbol parecía muérdago, pero era un haya, y en lugar de racimos de bayas blancas había conjuntos de ramitas que formaban una masa muy compacta. No recuerdo haber observado esto antes, pero vería más ejemplos durante el día.

I now took the track eastwards, having rejected one of my original options of walking up to the high ground on the border with Palencia

En lugar de seguir la pista hacia arriba y seguir la divisoria con Palencia, opté por ir a la izquierda y volver al pueblo atravesando zonas más boscosas

The trail took me through an area called Gulatrapa

Pasé por una zona que se llama Gulatrapa

and eventually I had views of the valley I'd walked along that morning

y llegué a avistar el valle que había recorrido esa mañana

The trail eventually comes out in Mazandrero, where I'd left my car

La pista acaba en Mazandrero, y allí di por terminada la ruta
