Nombres atrayentes/Villages with intriguing names

Hace cuatro años empecé a pensar en rutas que saliesen de pueblos de la zona de Luena cuyos nombres me resultaban intrigantes. En una ocasión salí de Selviejo, en otra de Sel del Tojo y este fin de semana combiné dos: Vozpornoche y Sel de la Carrera.

Vozpornoche es más bien una aldea, y la carretera local acaba ahí.  Hay sitio para un par de coches, y después de aparcar y saludar a los muchos perros que me rodearon, empecé a caminar. Subí por una senda detrás de la aldea en dirección a Urdiales.

Four years ago I began thinking about a number of villages with intriguing names in the southern part of Cantabria near the road up to the Escudo pass and started looking at possible walks that would give me the opportunity to visit them. On my third such walk I planned to combine two such places: Vozpornoche (literally Voice in the night) and Sel de la Carrera.

Vozpornoche  comprises just a few houses at the end of a B road. There's just enough room for a couple of vehicles, and after parking and being greeted by lots of dogs I began to walk up a lane behind the houses towards the village of Urdiales.

El topónimo "sel" en Cantabria se refiere a un lugar donde el ganado sestea, y es de suponer que con el tiempo las personas decidían construir casas en la proximidad de esos sitios y por eso existen los muchos pueblos en la zona que tienen Sel en su nombre                                                                                                                    Sel refers to a place where cattle could find some shade, and de la Carrera meant "on the way". There are several places in the area which have Sel in their name.

Otro aliciente de acercarme a Sel de la Carrera era que hay un ramal de la Vía Romana del Escudo que arranca cerca del pueblo. Dejé la pista que va a Silió (en el siguiente valle) y pensé que había encontrado la Vía, pero pronto la vegetación impedía mi paso. Con algo de pena volví a la pista

Another reason for taking in Sel de la Carrera was that a Roman road leads down to the village from the 

top of the range. So I took the track that leads to Silió in the next valley as far as the point where my map showed the old road to begin. I thought I'd found it, but the undergrowth soon made it impassable and I was forced to rejoin the track

  

Al llegar al collado de Pombo subí a la izquierda. El camino de la derecha sube a Cildá. Ya que fui a ese punto el día en que salí de Sal del Tojo, hoy iba a recorrer la parte del cordal que no tenía pisada.

El sol daba de frente todo el rato, como se aprecia en la foto. Mal día para mis fotos pero estupendo para andar.

When I reached the top of the incline I found myself between the steep slope on the right leading up to Cildá and one on the left, which headed south. I took the latter, towards the sun, which made this a great day for walking, but not so hot for photos, as you can see in the next one.

No seguí hasta la Piedra Lucía ya que recorrí ese tramo la vez que subí desde Selviejo. Di la vuelta y en la zona del Marojo bajé hacia la derecha por la braña

De allí bajé por el mismo camino que había subido. En Vozpornoche pude satisfacer mi curiosidad de preguntar sobre el origen de un nombre tan extraño. Me dijeron que no está claro, pero podría proceder de una braña donde la gente pasaba la noche...

From there I returned the way I'd come up. In Vozpornoche I asked about the origin of such an odd name. No-one can be sure apparently, but the old 'uns used to reckon it might be connected to some pastures where people would spend the night...

Walks from Lagunilla / Al sur de Salamanca

My first walks of the New Year were in the south of Castile. My base was Lagunilla, a village in Salamanca, on the Spanish meseta, near Extremadura to the south.

1) Dawn walk to Pizarral / Paseo al alba al Pizarral

Setting off before dawn to the SW, I was witness to the sun rising behind the Candelario Sierra

Empecé a andar hacia el SO antes del amanecer, y vi como el sol se levantaba detrás de la Sierra de Candelario

As I walked up and around the hill to the south of the village, the large Gabriel y Galán reservoir in Extremadura came into view                                                                                                                                                           Rodeé la colina y hacia el sur veía el embalse Gabriel y Galán, ya en Extremadura

I carried on up the gentle slopes to Pizarral, a name that refers to the slate in the area. From the high point of the walk I could see Lagunilla below to the north                                                                                                             Subí la cuesta suave al Pizarral. 2) Lagunilla - Río Cuerpo de Hombre

and then down towards the river. The weather started to worsen so we shortened the planned walk a little

It has a strange name: "Man's Body"(Corpus hominis in Roman times)                                                                   El río se llama "Cuerpo de hombre" - un nombre que llama mucho la atención

The rain continued as we walked back up from the river, but the low-lying cloud only added to the beauty of the scenery as we took a path up the hillside through the bracken

Seguía lloviendo mientras subimos por una pista de vuelta del río, pero la presencia de la nube hacía que la belleza aumentaba cuando cogimos una senda entre los helechos para subir en diagonal

However, visibility decreased considerably soon afterwards, and with the rain becoming heavier we latched onto one of the many trails in the area and headed back to Lagunilla. 

Sin embargo, poco después la visibilidad se reducía y la lluvia se ponía más insistente, así que cogimos una de las muchas pistas que hay para volver a Lagunilla.
