La Sierra del Escudo

Selviejo, en Luena, donde empecé mi primera excursión del año. En la entrada al pueblo cogí una calle a la derecha que rápidamente gana altura. Hacia el sur se ven las cimas nevadas a las que pensaba andar antes de bajar otra vez al punto de partida.

Looking down on Selviejo, in southern Cantabria, where I started my first hike of the year. At the entrance to the village I took a road up to the right that immediately gains elevation. To the south lie the snowcapped peaks I planned to walk round to, before coming back down and closing the circle. 

En el centro está Mediajo Frío, o Miyaju Altu, como dicen en esta zona, la cota más alta de la Sierra del Escudo.

Atajando la última parte del camino, llegué a esta majada (del Cerrillo) y seguí arriba, entrando en la zona nevada
Where the road levelled off I turned left to the west, and passed the huts where the snow line began on my way up to the top of the hill.

La subida empinada acaba a las 1100 metros, desde donde hay vistas interesantes: Cildá hacia el norte

Después de subir un poco más pude contemplar las montañas hacia el oeste
A little higher up and the mountains to the west came into view.

Ahora seguíamos una calzada romana, que no se distinguía a causa de la nieve, pero que algún vehículo había recorrido recientemente.
We were now following an old Roman road, which I couldn't see because of the snow, but tyre marks show it had recently been used

Me encontré con un montañero de la zona quien me explicó que en este valle llaman la cima "Miyaju Altu"

Ya me había llamado la atención la estructura que se ve a la izquierda de este collado
I had been wondering what the structure to the left of this pass was

Mientras subimos a la cima vemos Pico Jano, con el embalse de Alsa debajo
As we walk up to the summit we see Pico Jano, with the Also reservoir below it

El nombre Mediajo Frío parece apropiado al ver el hielo pegado a los postes y edificios en la cima. La palabra "midiar", origen del nombre de esta cima,  significa sestear el ganado, sobre todo en los puertos altos
The ice still stuck to the fence posts testifies to the name of the place. Mediajo frío refers to a a cold spot cattle can come up to when they want to cool down in the summer.

Hacía buena temperatura, aunque se notaba la brisa en la cumbre.
Luckily today it was quite warm, though there was a breeze on the summit.

A medida que el sol calentaba la nieve, se hacía más trabajoso andar, así que decidí aplazar el bocata hasta después de alcanzar las zonas verdes. Proseguimos hacía el SE hasta que viera un lugar propicio para bajar.
The sun was now making the snow's surface softer, and more difficult to walk on, so I decided to wait till we got down below the snow line to eat. We carried on to the South-east along the ridge, until I saw a likely place to head down into the valley. 

Me decanté por la loma en la derecha de la foto, y bajé hasta los árboles para luego torcer a la derecha. La idea era terminar en la pista que se aprecia en el centro de la foto.
This was the chosen spot, down the relatively gentle slope on the right of the photo, then down through the trees and round to the right. I was aiming for the track in the middle of the photo.

Ahora se trataba de confiar en el instinto. Seguí un sendero durante un rato, intentando evitar los árboles que se ven abajo a la derecha, hasta ver dónde pudiera alcanzar las cabañas y praos.
It was now a question of trusting to my instinct. I followed a path for a while, skirting the trees down to the right until I could get down to the huts and pastures.

Después de tantos días de lluvia el terreno era bastante resbaladizo
After all the rain in recent times the steep part of this wooded area was pretty slippery.

Anyway, eventually we got out of the woods

y llegamos a la pista que nos conducía a la aldea de Carrascal de San Miguel
and onto the track that led to the small village of Carrascal de San Miguel

En un cruce hay que ir hacia la izquierda, bajar hasta el río y subir la cuesta hasta Selviejo
Thence a left turn, down to cross the river and up the other side to Selviejo.

En total un poco más de 6 horas.

All in all, just over 6 hours since we set off
