Riaño ii. Pico Gilbo

Desde el columpio de Riaño al atardecer vemos la silueta llamativa del Gilbo a la izquierda, con el pueblo nuevo abajo a la derecha

Al día siguiente salimos desde el otro lado del puente con mejor tiempo. De hecho pudimos ver el Yordas, que habíamos subido el día anterior, sin nubes por primera vez

The next day we set out from the other side of the bridge with better weather. We were able to see Yordas, the peak we'd climbed the day before, for the first time without clouds obscuring it

and Gilbo was waiting for us as we came out of the wood

Nos acercamos a un collado a la derecha del pico, que nos proporcionó bonitas vistas del embalse y el Espigüete (der)

We walked up to a col to the right of the peak, which gave us a good view of the reservoir as well as mount Espigüete (right)

A partir del collado empieza una subida en diagonal por una senda rocosa

From there we took the diagonal path up the side of the mountain

Al acabar este tramo ya tenemos un panorama espectacular 

At the end of this section the views are already spectacular 

La última parte de la ascensión es una trepada por una canal muy vertical aunque encajonada sin zonas expuestas. Aunque el sol brillaba directamente desde el alto de la canal, el viento traía unas gotas finas de lluvia. Detrás de nosotros se formaba uno de los varios arcos iris que presenciamos durante el fin de semana

The last part of the ascent is a climb up a pretty vertical gully but it's not exposed. The sun shone down directly from the top but a few fine drops of rain started coming down. Behind us one of several rainbows we saw over the weekend was forming

We had a quick bite to eat and headed back down so as not to get stuck behind the big group

Seguimos un sendero por un bosque y de vez en cuando en algún claro veíamos el Yordas, que se había quedado definitivamente sin su capa de nubes

We followed a path down through a wood and the occasional clearing gave us a chance to look across at Yordas, which had now finally shaken off the clouds

Por último en el área recreativa de Biescas pudimos contemplar la cara por la que accedimos a la cumbre del Gilbo (der) - también conocido como el Cervino leonés

Finally down by the side of the reservoir we had a good view of the face of the mountain we'd just been on

Riaño: i. Pico Yordas

Empezaba el primero de dos días de excursiones por el Parque Regional Montaña de Riaño y Mampodre con la incertidumbre sobre el tiempo. Aparcamos al lado de unos caballos que pastaban tranquilamente pero cuando levantábamos la vista no veíamos más que nubes.

For the first of our two days in the province of León dodgy weather was forecast. As we set off, all we could see above the grazing land were clouds.

Después de un tramo por pista entramos en un bosque precioso y comenzamos a subir

After leaving the trail, we turned up into a wood and began our ascent

Mayoritariamente hayas pero algún tejo también

Mainly beech but also the occasional yew

Al salir del abrigo de los árboles, el día gris nos esperaba

Coming out of the trees, we were met by grey skies

Una llovizna nos obligaba a sacar los impermeables

An onset of drizzle had us donning waterproofs

Por suerte no duró mucho, y veíamos claramente la pista que habíamos seguido desde los coches

Fortunately it didn't last long, and we got a clear view of the trail we'd followed from the cars

Ahora un viento frío nos acompañaba mientras subimos el siguiente tramo

Rain was replaced by a cold wind as we continued upwards

Algunos del grupo decidieron dar marcha atrás en este punto, pero los demás continuamos hasta un collado que nos permitió ver al otro lado el embalse de Riaño

Some of the party decided to turn back, while the rest of us carried on to a col. From here we looked down on the reservoir that submerged the old village of Riaño back in 1986

 

Había bajado la temperatura y después de poner los guantes empezamos a seguir la senda a la cima del Pico Yordas. Estaba claro que no íbamos a tener vistas...

The temperature had fallen, and after putting gloves on we set off up the path to the top of Pico Yordas. Obviously we weren't expecting any spectacular views.

Durante unos segundos se apartó la nube y se dejó ver la pista del principio de la ruta

The cloud shifted for a couple of seconds and we glimpsed the trail from before

Almorzar y bajar por el mismo camino

Time for a bite to eat and then back down the way we came

Se quitaban algo las nubes y la visibilidad mejoraba un poco. En el centro de la imagen está el Pico Gilbo, que iba a ser la cumbre del día siguiente.

The clouds were thinning a little and visibility improving. In the middle of this photo is the next day's objective: Pico Gilbo.

Y después de pasar por el hayedo, volvimos a la pista, jalonada por arbustos que lucían los frutos de otoño. La lluvia sólo volvió cuando quedaban pocos minutos para llegar a los coches, así que pudimos considerar que habíamos tenido suerte con la meteo, a pesar de perder las vistas desde la cumbre.

Back down through the woods we went and onto the trail, trees being replaced by bushes laden with fruit. The rain only reappeared when we were minutes away from the cars, so luck was on our side weather-wise even though we missed out on the views from the summit.

Canal de San Carlos

Aproveché los últimos días de mis vacaciones y el tiempo propicio para entrenar un poco y luego acometer la subida por la Canal de San Carlos, paso desde Cillorigo de Liébana al macizo oriental de los Picos. Dejé el coche a la entrada de Viñón y seguí la pista que marca una inclinación ascendente respetable desde el principio. Después de pasar por un robledal empiezo a disfrutar de las vistas de las montañas cercanas 

I made the most of the last days of my holidays plus the good weather to get fit in order to walk up the San Carlos valley, which is a serious incline from the Liébana region to the Picos de Europa. A track leaving the village of Viñón takes you up through oak woods and then onto higher ground where you can start marvelling at the mountain scenery nearby

As I make my way up there is less and less green

El esfuerzo en subir ha merecido la pena. Me había asomado a este panorama otras veces después de subir desde el oeste - ya era hora que la conociera desde sus entrañas

The effort involved in walking up was well worth it. I'd looked down from this point on previous occasions after coming up from the other side - it felt good to have been in direct contact with the valley

In fact you can see the trail that I'd taken previously to get here at the foot of Mancondíu

Después de parar a comer algo en el collado, cogí la subida más suave hasta el Pico y desde la cima disfruté de las panorámicas:

After a bite to eat at the top of the valley, I followed the gentler of two trails up to the summit, and enjoyed the views from there:

I returned to the pass by the more direct route and began to descend the valley. Near the top is an old mine shaft

Evidentemente la bajada se hace bastante más rápida que la subida

Not surprisingly I came down the scree rather more quickly than I'd gone up!

At the bottom  of the valley I took a photo from the top of the knoll

The rest of the walk down was a total indulgence of beautiful views
