Caminos antiguos/Old roads

Siempre da gusto transitar por camberas antiguas, e imaginar la vida de los que pasaban por esos mismos parajes siglos atrás. Un camino de este tipo sube desde La Hermida por la ladera de Bejes
Whenever I walk along old paths, I like to imagine the lives of those who came that way in centuries past. 

This walk up from the Hermida Gorge to Bejes is a good example.

De vez en cuando hay vistas al otro lado del Desfiladero

There's the occasional spot where you can see across to the other side of the gorge

La Canal de Osina

Pensé que éste sería un sitio para madurar queso, pero estaba lleno de agua

I thought this might be a place for maturing the delicious local cheese, but on closer inspection it was full of water

Paré para almorzar mirando este valle que me trae recuerdos de hace más de 30 años cuando bajamos por un sendero ya escondido hasta el río Urdón para subir a Tresviso. 

This valley brings back memories of more than 30 years ago when we followed a path surely now overgrown down to the river and then up to Tresviso the other side

El Collado de Hoja ha sido el punto de comienzo de unas cuantas rutas, pero hoy era donde dejaba la subida. Bajé a la Aldea siguiendo el pie de una pared a la izquierda

I've begun many routes in the past at this pass, but today it was where I turned downhill. I followed the base of a cliff on the left down to one of the two villages that make up Bejes

De ahí subí en frente al otro barrio de Bejes, Quintana, desde donde miré hacia el Cdo de Hoja y La Aldea

From there I carried on to the other, and looked back to see the ground I'd covered from the Hoja pass

Subo un poco al Collado de Pebe y delante veo la bajada por una canal a La Hermida

I walk up a bit more and the other side of the Pebe pass I see the ravine that I will take to get back down to La Hermida 

Otro sendero pedregoso. Mientras bajaba, me acompañaba el ruido de un helicóptero llevando agua a la zona que se estaba quemando en frente. Eso rompía un poco la sensación de estar caminando por senderos de antaño.

Another stony path. However, the sound of the helicopter taking water to the hillside that was on fire opposite lessened the sensation that I was following in the footsteps of yore.

La senda sale a la carretera, que sigo durante medio kilómetro, y luego atajo por un castañar

I eventually came out onto the road, which I followed a few hundred yards before taking a shortcut down past several old chestnut trees

Al llegar a la Hermida me acerqué al puente, como habrán hecho muchos viajeros durante los siglos pasados, para ver cómo bajaba el Deva. 

When I got to La Hermida I did what many travellers have surely done over the years and looked down at the Deva river from the bridge.

Me apetecía una caminata por montes sin nieve, así que fui a las Encartaciones a repetir una ruta que hace 7 años quedaba descuidada por la niebla. El viernes en que me acerqué, la única niebla indicaba el discurrir del río Agüera.

Having had my fill of snow for the time being, I chose a walk where I'd be guaranteed to find very little of the stuff. So I headed for an area of the Basque Country very near to Cantabria. The mist forming over the Agüera river was visible as I set off up the hill.

Hoy era otra cosa. Durante el paseo corto del Armañón con suelo arenisco a los Jorrios calcáreos me figuraba que la subida por el karst sería en diagonal hacia la derecha para luego ir derecho hacía arriba. Sin embargo, cuando llegué a la base vi que se señalizaba el lado izquierdo. De todas formas, me extrañaba mucho que dos montañas tan cercanas no tuviesen absolutamente nada en común salvo su altitud parecida (unos 850 metros); Armañón es ligeramente más alta.

Today was very different. It's only a short walk from the sandstone Armañón to the limestone Los Jorrios. Incredibly (for me) despite being so close, the two mountains have absolutely nothing in common except that they are a similar height (about 850 metres), Armañón being the higher.

la continuación valle abajo era un paseo agradable que bordeaba una plantación de pinos y seguí un canal de agua. Conectaba luego con la pista de la subida y regresé tranquilamente al coche. En todo el trayecto no vi a nadie - es lo que tienen los viernes, incluso en el País Vasco.

a pleasant continuation was lower down the valley, skirting a pine plantation and following a pretty channel of water, which brought me out onto the trail I'd walked up earlier on.

Después de la nevada / After the snowfall

Hoy iba a comprobar como una ruta hecha en otras ocasiones adquiere otro aspecto después de una   copiosa nevada. Nada más salir del parking de los Collados del Asón nos vimos rodeados de nieve.                               

The same walk done in spring or autumn will obviously transmit different sensations, and in winter, after a heavy snowfall, that difference is even greater. Almost immediately after leaving the carpark we found snow on all sides.

Los Campanarios tendrán que esperar a otro día

Campanarios is one of the peaks on our list, but it will have to wait for another day

We made our way up through a wood, treading carefully to minimise the chances of a leg suddenly disappearing through soft snow - impossible to prevent altogether

...y seguimos hasta la arista donde el viento del norte nos obliga a abrigarnos.  Los que traen crampones,  los van poniendo puesto que hay un tramo corto de hielo. Resbalar hacia el barranco no entra dentro de              mis planes. Tomo un piolet prestado para solventar la cuesta.                                                                                           ...and headed up to the ridge, where the northerly wind made us wrap up. Those that had crampons put them on as there was a short icy incline. Sliding down into the ravine was not on my wishlist. I borrowed a           piolet to help me up to safer ground.

Hacia el norte queda una montaña también muy conocida, y con nombre parecido, Porracolina,  pero aunque es un poco más baja, requiere más esfuerzo para subirla

To the north there's well-known mountain with a similar name, Porracolina, but although it's not quite as high, getting to the top requires a little more effort.

Decidimos bajar por el mismo "camino". Ya apenas queda hielo en el tramo delicado de antes.

We decided to return by the same route. Thankfully, there was hardly any ice on that slope now.

We reached the carpark as darkness was falling. We'd definitely made full use of the hours of daylight!
