Still waters/aguas tranquilas

En los últimos tiempos he visitado varios lugares que forman parte del Anillo Verde de la Bahía de Santander, descubriendo unos pozones cuya existencia me era desconocida. La mayoría son el resultado de la actividad minera en la zona, como el Pozón de la Dolores en Parbayón, al lado de la carretera de Escobedo a Muriedas. También se le conoce como Pozón de los Ingleses, ya que en el siglo XIX las explotaciones de hierro pertenecían a una empresa escocesa. Al acabarse la actividad en la mina, esta se inundaba y se ha convertido en una laguna que atrae aves migratorias. 

In recent times I've discovered several protected spots in the Santander bay area, known as "Anillo Verde" many of which are home to pools and pit lakes. The first one, the Dolores pool, is also known as the English pool, as the iron ore in the vicinity was extracted in the 19th century by a Scottish firm. Unfortunately, the different nationalities in the British Isles have traditionally been lumped together as "English" in Spain. Anyway, once the mine closed, it flooded and began a new life as a lake that attracts migrating birds.

On the two occasions I've been there I've seen water birds, like these herons, but as I had to keep my distance and my camera doesn't have a decent zoom, you'll have to look carefully to see them!

Pozón de la Dolores

Al este del Pozón se levanta Peña Cabarga, donde minería a cielo abierto ha existido por lo menos desde tiempos romanos

To the east is the Peña Cabarga range, where open cast mining has taken place at least since Roman times.

El escritor romano Plinio "el viejo" menciona el monte y la existencia del metal. Cogió relevancia más tarde en los siglos XVII a XIX, cuando la Real Fábrica de Artillería de La Cavada producía munición del hierro encontrado aquí.

Pliny the Elder mentions the hill and the iron ore to be found there. It came to prominence later in the 17th to 19th centuries when the foundry in nearby La Cavada produced artillery using iron mined here.

En Tarriba  (Pámanes) en la ladera sur de Peña Cabarga se puede seguir el trazado de los viejos ferrocarriles de la minería que transportaba el mineral extraído a los lavaderos que hoy constituyen dos lagunas artificiales: Los Pozos de Valcaba

On the southern slopes of Peña Cabarga you can walk along the route that the old mining railway used for transporting the iron ore to and from the washing site, which is today known as Los Pozos de Valcaba , and made up of two pools.

Al norte de Peña Cabarga, en Gajano, se encuentra en pozo pequeño que era antiguamente una mina de yeso. Al concluir las operaciones de extracción en los años 70 del siglo pasado afloraba el nivel freático.

Next stop is Gajano, to the north of the Peña. Here there was formerly a gypsum mine. It was used till the 1970s, after which the water table rose to form a small pool

Pozón de la Yesera

Cerca de este pozón hay un afluente de la Ría de Tijero. Hay restos de la Real Fábrica de Artillería aquí también. En la foto vemos la ría al pie de Peña Cabarga en su curso hacia la Bahía de Santander 

Near this pool is a tributary of the Tijero estuary, where there are also remains of one of the munitions foundries. The next photo looks towards the water course at the foot of the Peña Cabarga range as it flows towards Santander Bay

Gazano

Otro pequeño pozón situado en Camargo, el pozón de la Ruperta, no forma parte del Anillo Verde de la Bahía de Santander pero igual que los pozos de Valcaba se usaba como lavadero para el hierro extraído de las minas. Se accede a este pozo coqueto desde la base de la cuesta que sube hacia Escobedo, siguiendo un sendero paralelo a la carretera. 

Another small pool named after a woman, located in Camargo is not part of the "Anillo Verde", but like the Pozos de Valcaba was used as a washing site for iron ore. You can reach this pretty spot by taking a path that runs parallel to the road up the hill to Escobedo.

Pozón de la Ruperta

Si sigues el sendero hacia el oeste llegas a Escobedo y la Cantera de Bilbao; esta sí se encuentra dentro del Anillo Verde. Allí crece este encina espectacular en la parte de arriba donde llega la escalera de madera que han colocado hace pocos años

If you follow the path to the west you get to Escobedo and the old "Bilbao quarry", which is part of the Anillo Verde. This spectacular holm oak stands at the top of the wooden steps that lead up the side of the quarry.

Por último, recientemente volví a visitar el Pozo Tremeo en Rumoroso (Polanco). Leí que habían abierto un sendero para poder apreciar al lago desde el monte detrás. Hay varias sendas que se pueden recorrer al lado del lago, pero si ha llovido en los días previos a la visitas, unas botas de montaña son imprescindibles. A diferencia de los demás pozos, este es un lago natural. El agua en la parte superior es dulce, mientras los 6 metros inferiores son de agua salada.

Finally, I recently revisited the Tremeo pool near the village of Rumoroso as I'd read that the local council had opened up a path for visitors to walk round the pool.There are various pathways you can follow, but if there has been rain of late make sure you're wearing walking boots! Unlike the others, this is a natural lake. The water in the top half is freshwater, while the lower six metres are salt water.

la Ruta de los Foramontanos

Cuando estuve en las inmediaciones de Viaña en enero vi una señalización a la ruta de los Foramontanos. Siempre había asociado ésta con el camino de Renedo de Cabuérniga a Correpoco, y no era consciente que existían ramales que también datan de los siglos IX y X, cuando las gentes salían fuera de la montaña para repoblar Castilla.

Al ser un tramo corto, lo hice un día en que tenía solo la mañana libre. Salí de Renedo, un pueblo que tiene rincones que merecen la pena, y después de cruzar el río subí por el camino señalado que recuerdo haber seguido poco después de venir a vivir a Cantabria. Para no repetir camino a la ida y la vuelta más allá de lo imprescindible seguí una pista que se adentra en una finca, sin estar del todo seguro si el tránsito por estos praos es permitido al público en general o no. Volví a conectar con el camino principal sin haber visto a nadie en la finca y pronto cogí una desviación que pasa por una ermita y continúa a veces de forma poco definida para rodear la base del Pico del Cueto. 

When I was in Viaña three weeks ago I spotted a signpost for the Foramontanos trail. I'd always associated this with the main Saja valley, without realising there were branches leading off the main route. These were also used in the 9th and 10th centuries by those who were leaving the mountainous regions of the north to repopulate Castile after the Moors were driven south.

As this is a short section, I did it on a day when I had just the morning free. I parked in Renedo, which is rather more than the main road that runs through it, and crossed the river, before following a track up to the right. So as not to do exactly the same walk there and back, I followed a path that runs through somone's estate, without being sure whether it was a right of way or not. With some relief I regained the main track without having met anyone and soon took a fork that leads to an old chapel, and then takes you round to the left of a very noticeable hill.

Pico del Cueto

Al llegar a la carretera muy cerca de Viaña vi los vehículos que habían aparcado unos cazadores. Había oido disparos al otro lado del valle esa mañana. Aquí arranca el ramal de la ruta de los Foramontanos, así que di la vuelta y volví cambera arriba. De repente oí el ladrido de un sabueso bastante cerca, y poco después vi como un jabalí imponente pasaba rápidamente delante de mi por el sotobosque. Al rato vino un perro y luego otro, siguiendo su rastro. Había un par de cazadores en el mirador sobre Viaña, pero ya no los volví a ver ni a ellos ni los perros ni su presa.

Cuando me acercaba al lugar donde había visto a los del chaleco naranja decidí evitar cualquier posibilidad de contacto con ellos y sus armas, además de variar la ruta. Dejé la cambera y subí la ladera empinada de una cima que visitaba hace más de diez años.

When I got to the road that links Viaña with Renedo I set off back up the path. Earlier on I'd heard gunshots from a hunting party on the other side of the road so to my surprise, I now heard one of their  dogs barking very nearby. Soon afterwards a large boar moved hurriedly past through the trees and about a minute later first one then a second dog came down the track I was on in pursuit. A couple of hunters in their orange vests were visible at the vantage point I'd stopped at before, but I that was the last I saw of them, the dogs or their quarry.

When I neared the place where I'd seen the gilets oranges I made up my mind to avoid any possible contact with them and their weapons, as well as varying the walk a little. So I turned off the track and headed up the steep hillside to revisit a summit I'd not been back to in over 10 years.

Pico del Cueto

Conecté de nuevo con la pista de un par de horas antes y pasé por delante de la ermita
