Por el Valle de Zamanzas / a spring day in north Castile

Una mañana agradable de primavera, amenizada por el canto del cuco, bajamos hacia el río viendo entre los árboles florecientes los tejados de un pueblo hacia donde nos dirigimos

We walked down towards the river of a spring morning, a cuckoo singing nearby, through the blossom catching a glimpse of a village we would pass through soon enough

We now see the river from higher up

Andamos por la sierra de la Albuera

Up we walk to the Albuera sierra

Después de subir y bajar comenzamos un tramo largo por un encinar flanqueado de rocas

After a few ups and downs we begin a longish stretch through a holm oak wood flanked by rocky hillside

Este árbol espectacular me llamó mucha la atención. Creo que es una coscoja

This tree stood out from the rest; I think it's a kermes oak

Continuamos en suave ascensión y cuando comienza a cerrarse el valle, subimos por una canal. 

We carry on up the valley and out of the wood. The path we're following then heads up a gulley to the left.

Near the top I look back

Desde arriba vemos las escasas ruinas del castillo de Arreba delante de nosotros - recuerdo una excursión que hicimos pasando por ellas como reciente pero veo que fue hace nueve años...

Precisamos de un mapa para constatar que las cimas nevadas al fondo corresponden a Castro Valnera 

From above we can see the scant remains of Arreba Castle in front of us - what I remembered as a fairly recent walk up to them turns out to have been nine years ago!

We need to look at a map to work out that the snowcapped mountains in the distance are Castro Valnera

Llegamos a un sitio que nos ofrece buenas vistas al oeste. Bajaremos al pueblo de abajo para volver al pueblo donde comenzamos la ruta de hoy

We reach a point that affords pleasant views to the west. All that's left is for us to walk down to the village where we began the day's excursion

Los recuerdos de mi infancia, que siempre brotan cuando estoy en el campo, se profundizaron al terminar la excursión ya que tuvimos la suerte de poder pasar un rato con unos caballos y observar este potro que había nacido hacía solo seis días.

Childhood memories from the Common, ever present when I'm out in the country, were heightened at the end of the walk as we were lucky enough to be able to spend some time with some horses and see this six-day old foal close-up
