Pirineo días 3 y 4 / Pyrenees days 3 & 4

 Los próximos días empezaban con bajada - todo lo contrario a lo que estamos acostumbrados. Aunque arrancamos el tercer día temprano como siempre, el sol nos daba de lleno e iba a ser un día muy caluroso hasta el final. Menos mal que era la etapa más corta.                                                                                                     The next days began with a downhill stretch, the opposite of what we're used to. Even though we made an early start, there was little escape from the strong sunshine, and it was to be a hot day. Just as well it was the shortest stage.

Llegamos a una de las entradas al Pirineo desde el lado francés, donde aprovechamos para meter los pies en el río antes de cambiar de dirección con una subida suave hacia el sur.

We came down to one of the gateways to the Pyrenees from the French side, and took full advantage to chill our feet in the cold water of the river before changing direction and taking a gentle upward trail southwards.

Plan d'Aste

Un bosque de abetos nos daba un poco de sombra durante un rato

A fir wood gave us much appreciated shade for a while

Seguimos el río Arrens un poco. Mañana volveríamos a acompañarlo valle arriba

We followed the Arrens river for a bit. The next day we'd continue the walk right up the valley

Lots of people were enjoying the water near this waterfall

Doumblas

Poco después nos dirigimos hacia la derecha al lado del arroyo Larribet

Shortly afterwards we headed up to the right following the Larribet stream

El sol nos castigaba mientras ascendíamos al refugio. Pero al ser una etapa corta fue el único día en que teníamos tiempo de tomar alguna bebida fresquita antes de cumplir el ritual de la cena a las 19:00.

It was unpleasantly warm as we made our way up to the hut. However, it was the only day when we had time to have a couple of cool drinks before sitting down to dinner at the usual time of 7pm.

Refugio Larribet

A la mañana siguiente veíamos de nuevo el Balaïtous desde el refugio. 

Next morning we saw the Balaïtous again from the refuge.

Desanduvimos la última parte de la etapa del día anterior, bajando hasta el valle d'Arrens

We walked back down the last part of yesterday's stage, coming out again in the Arrens Valley

Era una subida tendida bastante larga, muy agradable para mí por la bajada de temperatura y presencia de brisas

It was a pretty long but gentle incline, and really enjoyable for me as the temperature had dropped and there was a constant breeze.

Más arriba bajaba el agua de un valle colgado

A little further along the water streamed down from a hanging valley

Llegamos a otro punto donde se encuentran Francia y España. Por si alguien se pregunta, como yo,  peyre quiere decir roca en occitano

We came to another pass between France and Spain. If you're wondering, like I was, peyre is local dialect for rock

Retrocedimos cien metros y subimos hacia el sureste

We walked back 100 metres and started the day's serious climb 

Buena parte de la subida era muy empinada

For the most part it was fairly steep

Desde el Col de Cambalès (2706 m) teníamos el valle colgado enfrente y el Balaïtous arriba del todo

From the Col de Cambalès we had the hanging valley opposite and Balaïtous right up above everything

Todavía quedaba una bajada de varios kms hasta el refugio

There were still a few kms to descend till we got to the refuge

Primero tuvimos que pasar una zona de canchales y luego un nevero para conectar con el sendero

First we had to negotiate a mass of boulders and then a snowfield to get onto the path

Una mirada hacia atrás

A glance back

Había previsión de posible tormenta pero por suerte no nos caía agua

Possible storms were forecast but luckily no rain fell here

En la última parte del descenso pasamos al lado de este abeto que había recibido el impacto de un rayo otro día de tormenta de verdad

During the final part of the descent we walked past this fir that had been struck by lightning on a day when the storm did break

Así acabamos la "etapa reina" en el refugio Wallon-Marcadau, el más grande y moderno de los que vimos, incluso con elementos de edificio inteligente. Me encontraba muy bien, aunque algo que cené me iba a jugar una mala pasada en los dos etapas siguientes.

And so we completed what was supposedly the toughest stage. Compared to previous ones, the Wallon-Marcadau refuge was very big and modern, with elements of a smart building. I was in good shape, but something I ate that evening was to make the last two stages tougher than the fourth.
