La Sierra de Rozas

En una caminata por Soba en el 2021 vi esta sierra enfrente de San Pedro y la apunté para explorar algún día. En primer lugar me intrigaba la canal que intuía la separaba de la sierra del Hornijo, que iba a subir ese día.  La Canal de Ancillo (o de San Pedro) se llama, y la recorreré un día de estos. Mientras tanto, como ruta más corta escogí salir del pueblo de Rozas para conocer más de cerca la sierra que recibe su nombre.

Setting off on a walk in the Soba region of Cantabria in 2021 I saw the range opposite and made a note to come back another day and see it close up. I was particularly taken by the valley that must separate it from the Hornijo range that I was headed for that day. The Canal de Ancillo it's called, and one of these days it will appear here. Meantime, I was back to do a shorter walk from Rozas village up to the range itself, which bears its name.

Mirando hacia el sur mientras subía la ladera herbosa

Y ya metido en terreno típico de zona de karst

which gradually became typically karst

Hay varias cumbres, desde la primera de las que me vigilaban los buitres

There are several summits, from the first of which a group of vultures kept me in their sights

Llegué a una cota de 996m que me ofrecía esta vista de la sierra del Hornijo enfrente y la canal de Ancillo abajo

I got to a summit that afforded this view of the Hornijo range opposite and the Ancillo valley below

Hacia el otro lado había una cima más elevada que donde me encontraba

To the other side was a summit higher than the one I was on

Pico de la Tobazona

Ya no hay senderos desde hace un buen rato y hay que pisar con cuidado, buscando el camino menos incómodo.

There are no paths up here and care needs to be taken as you seek out the least uncomfortable route up

Desde esa cima, que luego descubrí que se llama Pico de Tobazona, veía otra cima que tiene 16 metros más de elevación y es el más alto de la sierra, un poco más al NE. Aunque la subida hasta ahora había sido divertida, no sentía la necesidad de seguir subiendo por este terreno.

From the top I saw another summit sightly higher, which is the highest point of the range. Although the walk thus far had been fun I didn't see the need to go farther

Me acerqué un poco al norte para ver la zona abajo donde desemboca la canal de Ancillo

I went over to the north side to see what it's like down below where the Ancillo valley comes out

Empecé a retroceder, pero esta vez bordeé la primera cumbre, que luego descubrí que también tiene nombre, y bajé hacia el SO

I started on my way back, but this time went round the first summit and descended to the SW

El Pico de las Trapías

La bajada es un poco más pindia que la subida, pero pronto se llega a terreno fácil de andar y me dirigí hacia la boca de la canal de Ancillo, que queda pendiente de explorar

Going down was a bit steeper than coming up, but I soon got to a gentle grassy slope and walked down to ther mouth of the Ancillo valley, to which I will return one of these days

A su derecho está la sierra que de la que acabo de bajar, con una ventana llamativa en la roca

To the right is the range I just came down from, with a very visible slit in the rockface

Ahora cogí dirección Rozas, con la sierra a mi izquierda

I now headed back towards Rozas, with the range on my left

Detrás de mí se ve claramente la pared que sale de la Sierra del Hornijo hacia los praos de San Pedro

Behind me you can clearly see the wall that juts out of the Hornijo range and runs towards San Pedro

I walked down an old path

llegando a Rozas, donde vi esta casa que nombre apropiado

and coming into Rozas I saw this house with an apt name:"Steep"

Terreno conocido / Familiar territory

Había habido lluvia en la última semana además de una nevada en alturas bajas, así que era momento propicio de hacer esta excursión. Aparqué (no sin dificultad) en Viaña de Cabuérniga y se veía algo de nieve en los montes cercanos

Recent rainfall and then snow on lowish ground made this the ideal time to do this excursion. Views from the village in Cabuérniga at the start of the walk  

Viaña

Hay un sendero  que recorre el arroyo de Viaña y que permite disfrutar de las 20 cascadas (según el cartel) en el tramo balizado

There is a path that runs alongside Viaña river and affords views of the 20 or so waterfalls in a stretch that has recently been signposted

Tardé menos de hora y media en llegar a la cascada más espectacular: El Pozo del Infierno

In less than an hour and a half you get to the most spectacular fall: Hell's well it's called

En lugar de volver por el mismo camino, cogí un sendero hacia la izquierda para seguir el arroyo

Rather than returning the way I'd come, I followed the course of the river, talking a path up to the left

 

Todavía quedan más saltos, aunque ya no hay sendero definido

There are still a number of falls to be seen

Si quieres volver a Viaña por Zarzamorosa puedes cruzar el arroyo y meterte en el valle que va hacia el sur

A valley opens up to the right that you could take if you wanted to return to Viaña via the hills to the south

pero ya que había cogido ese camino un par de veces antes así que continué hasta la cabecera del valle, cerca de una pista que pasa por debajo del Tordías

but I'd decided to go along the ridge opposite, so carried on following the right-hand bank up to the head of the valley, just below Tordías, a hill oft-frequented on walks from Ucieda or Los Llares 

Braña de Leonzón

Subiendo hacia la izquierda se llega rápidamente al alto de Leonzón, con vistas fenomenales de las montañas nevadas

A short walk up to the left was rewarded with phenomenal views of the snow-covered mountains to the west

En la siguiente foto se ve la pista que pasa por debajo de Tordías y también se puede coger si quieres ir a Zarzamorosa

The track in the next photo also takes you up towards Zarzamorosa. I had headed up left just before reaching the track

Había unos cuantos caballos, y más tarde vi un grupo nutrido de venados que salían del bosque

Quite a few horses in evidence, and later on coming out of the woods a large group of deer

Se llega a ver Viaña, abajo en el valle, y a más altitud un claro, cerca del que iba a pasar más tarde

Viaña came into view, right down in the valley, and higher up, a notable clearing I was to go past on my way down

Cueto Concilla; la Sierra de Híjar

Continué hasta Pernal Jarmoso, y miré atrás hacia la última parte del recorrido. Se ve Castro Valnera detrás del Alto de Leonzón

I walked as far as Pernal Jarmoso and looked back at the stretch I'd just covered. Castro Valnera is now visible behind the Alto de Leónzón

Bajé directamente por los escajos y el brezo hasta conectar con un camino que entraba en el bosque

Then it was down through an oak wood following a path I didn't remember from the last time I was in this neck of the woods

Y después de cruzar el arroyo al fondo de valle subí hasta el pueblo, que tiene reflejado aquí su deseo de conexión a Internet

And after crossing the river a short walk up to the village, which greets visitors with a demand for connexion to the Internet

El corazón de la provincia/ the heart of the province

Aproveché de una mañana espléndida para hacer una ruta corta en una zona que he explorado poco. En el centro geográfico de Cantabia, la divisoria entre los valles de Toranzo y Amievas/Iguña ofrece bonitas vistas de las montañas de la provincia. Aquí hacia el este: 

I made the most of a beautiful morning to take a short walk near the mid-point of the province of Cantabria. The modest watershed between two valleys offers lovely views of the mountains to east and west. Here looking eastwards:

Part of the walk follows stretches of a Roman road 

A lo lejos las montañas del oeste: Alto Campóo, Cueto Concilla, Peña Sagra, Picos de Europa...

The mountains to the west

Unos metros más allá de la Espina del Gallego están los derrumbes de un castro desde donde los Cántabros resistían al ejercito romano, luego éstos ocuparon el lugar. No sé ve más que rocas, pero me quedé un rato intentando imaginar cómo habría sido aquello hacia dos mil años

A couple of hundred metres from the Espina del Gallego peak lie the remains of a pre-Roman fort, which was later occupied by the Roman army when they overcame the locals. Rocks are all that are to be seen, but I stayed a while trying to imagine what it was like two thousand years ago.

This vantage point affords views of Santander on the coast

Bajé en esa dirección, pasando por un acebal; los árboles repletos de bayas

I descended in that direction, the holly berries adding colour on the way

A continuación entré en el hayedo de Requejada 

Later on the path took me through a beech wood 

y finalmente una pista que bordeaba los praos me llevaba hacia el final del circuito

and finally the bucolic views of the meadows gave another twist to the varied countryside on the walk
