Ha sido oportuno concluir las excursiones de 2015 en Palencia, una provincia que me ha marcado la segunda mitad del año. Salimos del Golobar con el propósito de visitar la Cueva del Coble.
My last walk of the year was fittingly, in Palencia, which has figured strongly in the latter half of 2015 on this blog. The objective was a cave not far from the provincial limits with Cantabria.
Soplaba muy fuerte el viento sur, pero decidimos pasar primero por la cima de Valdecebollas. En el collado entre ésta y Canaletas, miré hacia la sierra del Cordel.
There was a very strong wind, which became more uncomfortable as we approached the summit of Valdecebollas.

Bajando en dirección norte, dejamos esta cuenca a nuestra derecha
We descended northwards
Delante de nosotros el camino a recorrer: íbamos a bordear los afloramientos de roca por la derecha hasta llegar a la más grande, que se ve en el centro-izquierda de la foto, debajo del Cueto Mañín.
This shows the next part of the walk. The plan was to continue more or less on the level above the rocky outcrops as far the largest one in the centre-left of shot.
Primero a seguir bajando hasta Seldelafuente
But first we had to go right down to the floor of the valley
Después a subir un poquito y mantener el rumbo hacia el NO. Sin darnos cuenta dejamos la cueva a nuestra izquierda - aunque hay un hito muy visible - y seguimos adelante. Luego me alegré mucho porque la continuación era la parte más bonita del recorrido.
We then went up the other side a little before the path leveled off. We ignored a cairn to our left which led to the cave, without realising that we were letting ourselves in for a longer walk. But just as well, as it was the part I enjoyed the most
Llegamos a la roca, donde bajamos por una canal muy empinada
When we reached the rock, we headed down and towards the left.
El momento más espectacular llegó cuando una manada de rebecos bajaron a toda velocidad la cuesta a nuestra izquierda y acto seguido escalaron la roca de enfrente con una rapidez y agilidad pasmosa. No conseguí sacar ninguna foto, pero el recuerdo tardará en desaparecer de mi mente.
The most spectacular moment was when a group of chamois ran down the lefthand cliffside and promptly raced up the rocks to the right with incredible agility and speed. I didn't get a photo, but the image will live long in my memory.
Desde la salida de la canal, que sigue el arroyo Peñalba, mirando atrás. Arriba del todo está el Cueto Mañín. Aquí se ve la perspectiva desde ahí (en un día de verano)
Ahora se trataba de ladear por debajo de los afloramientos de roca, atravesando el bosque. Al fondo está Valdecebollas . La visibilidad iba mejorando, y durante este tramo ya no sentíamos el viento.
We now followed a path to the left, towards the woods. Valdecebollas is in the background. Visibility was improving and thankfully, we were now out of the wind.
Por fin dimos con la cueva, después de enlazar con un sendero que sube desde Sta. María de Redondo
We eventually came upon the cave, after joining a signposted path that came up from a village to the west.

Aquí supuestamente nace el río Pisuerga. Se ve a la derecha.
A well-known Spanish river (the Pisuerga) has its source here. You can see it on the right.
Cuando salimos de la cueva había que subir hacia el hito que vimos antes. La subida se hacía más llevadera con paradas para disfrutar de las vistas que se abrían hacia el oeste
After leaving the cave, we had to make our way up the hillside to the cairn we'd seen earlier on. Each stop for a breather was a chance to admire the views that gradually opened up to the west
Una zona en llano y llegamos a un charco. A partir de ahí subimos de nuevo hacia el este
We reached this pool, and shortly afterwards had to carry on upwards to the east again.
A medida que subíamos, nos encontrábamos otra vez con el viento. A la izquierda está Seldelafuente
As we made our way up, the wind made its presence felt again. Below to the left is the valley we crossed hours before.
Subíamos los senderistas, bajaba el sol, aumentaba el viento, pero mejoraban las vistas.
Us walkers moved on up, the sun went down, the wind got stronger, but the views got better.
Los Picos de Europa atrás, con Peña Labra más cerca a la derecha
Valdecebollas a la izquierda. El Espigüete se asoma a lo lejos, y Curavacas se ve a su derecha.
Valdecebollas is on the left, and in the distance the other main mountains in Palencia.
Otra excursión en que llegamos a los coches justo cuando se ponía el sol. Otro día aprovechado al máximo.
Not for the first time we got to the car just as the sun was setting.
