Más allá de lo ya pisado / Beyond the trodden path

He paseado algunas veces por Cuchisecos pero siempre he vuelto por el mismo camino, por lo que esta ruta circular balizada por Naturea me ofrecía una alternativa.

Empecé en Los Llares en lugar de San Vicente de León y cogí el sendero que pasa cerca de la zona recreativa y luego pasa a la izquierda del Alto de la Manzana

I've visited these woodlands on several occasions but have always come back the way I went, so this signposted loop offered an alternative.

I began in Los Llares and took a path that goes past a recreational area and to the left of the Manzana hill.

Estos cuatro troncos cerca del regato de la Teba parecían marcar una X

These four tree trunks seemed to be where X marked the spot.

Los colores de otoño alegraban la vista

Autumn colours were pleasing to the eye

Donde el sendero empieza a bajar di la vuelta la última vez que andaba por aquí, pero hoy seguí el camino y no tardé en acercarme a la salida del bosque

Where the path starts to go down is as far as I walked last time I was in this neck before I turned back, but today I carried on and soon approached the edge of the woods

Una vista atrás a la zona transcurrida

Looking back at the area I'd walked through

Después de llegar al sel de la Serruldá, viene una bajada muy pronunciada que ofrece una gran panorámica

After reaching a pasture called La Serruldá,  there's a steep descent with lovely views

Más adelante llego a la Braña, con este espino con muérdago en el centro

A bit further on is this grazing land with a hawthorn bush decked with mistletoe 

Poco después hay una explotación ganadera: no había visto casetas como estas antes

Shortly afterwards I came to a large farm; I hadn't seen huts like these before

Caserío Bariza

Hay un calvario con cruces que forma mirador sobre el pueblo

There's a calvary cross overlooking the village the signposted way suggests as starting point

San Vicente de León

De aquí bajé por un castañar, aprovechando para recoger algunos castaños

I carried on down a path, picking up a few chestnuts on the way 

Al fondo del valle se cruza el río y se cierra un círculo variado.

At the foot of the valley I crossed the river and this varied walk came to an end.

Cita ineludible / an annual date in the diary

Mi primera cita con el otoño arranca al cruzar el Saja                                                                                                  I always make sure I don't miss the autumn spectacle in the forests of Cantabria

Y ahora mirando hacia el sur

Un paseo al lado del río

A walk along the bank

Subo por el hayedo rodeado por el color de la clorofila

And then up through the beech wood, the colour of chlorophyll still much in evidence

Desde el mirador de Canto Pilanco mirando hacia el oeste

From this vantage point, looking over to the west

Subo un poco más y encuentro unos hayas de tamaño considerable

Further up the hillside I come across a few hefty beech trees

Salgo del bosque; las bayas del acebo y los helechos reflejan el mes de noviembre

Out of the wood; the holly bushes and bracken in autumn garb

Cueto la Concilla

Esta es una excursión de mañana sólo, así que toca bajar otra vez al valle

This is just a morning walk, so it's time to head back down into the valley

Hay unos cuantos árboles caídos

There are a few uprooted trees

Bajo hasta el pueblo de Saja, donde cojo el GR-71(aunque no veo ninguna baliza) que ya no va por la carretera como en el 95, cuando hicimos el recorrido como bienvenida a Cantabria 

I make my way down to the village of Saja, where I connect up with the (unsignposted) GR-71, which no longer follows the road, as was the case when we did this trek in '95 a month after coming to Cantabria to live

Volviendo al coche, veo la parte de la ruta donde empecé a bajar

On my way back to the car I see the part of the walk where I began to come down the hillside
