Entre Las Cuerres y el Tumbo / a red letter day

Aproveché un domingo soleado de otoño para subir desde el Valle de Bedoya al extremo norte de la Sierra de Peña Sagra, una ruta que me recordaba otra que hice con Carmen y Yuri hace años.

I chose a lovely autumn day to walk up from the Bedoya Valley to the northern end of the Peña Sagra Sierra, evoking memories of a walk Carmen and I did years ago with Yuri.

Al pasar la iglesia de Salarzón coges la cuesta a la derecha y luego la primera a la derecha para salir del pueblo. En una bifurcación cogí el ramal de la izquierda - desde donde saqué la foto anterior, pero es más sencillo coger el que sigue llano, trazando una curva a la derecha. A partir de allí el camino es una subida bastante pindia a través del bosque. Hay un momento en que se sale momentáneamente del bosque y se aprecia la Cordillera Cantábrica y los Picos (foto).
I turned right up past the church and then right again out of the village. Where the track forks, keep to the lower one and follow the bend round to the right. Thereafter it's pretty steep up through the woods. There's a break in the trees with beautiful views of the Cordillera Cantábrica and Eastern Picos (photo).

En el primer cruce sigue adelante, dirección la Braña de los Tejos, ignorando la pista que baja a la derecha. En el segundo, mantente a la izquierda y continúa con la subida.
At the first crossroads keep straight on, following the signpost to the Braña de los Tejos, ignoring the track down to the right. At the second, turn left and keep going up the steep track.

La pista sale del bosque justo antes de llegar al collado de Taruey. Paré a comer algo, y este amigo se acercó a saludar.
This eventually comes out of the woods and almost immediately takes you to the Taruey pastures. This local resident couldn't have got much closer, when he saw me stop for a bite to eat.

Luego dejé la pista y subí hacia el este. Me llamó la atención este roble todavía con las hojas verdes, delante de unas hayas ya con tonos otoñales - normalmente es al revés.
I then left the track and walked uphill to the east. I was surprised to see this oak whose leaves were yet to change colour,  in front of a stand of beech trees already looking very autumnal - usually it's the other way round.

Una vez arriba disfruté de la perspectiva del Cornón a lo lejos y otras cimas de la Sierra como Pico Paraes y (la más cercana) El Tumbo. Continué hasta la cota de 1.634 mts que se ve en la foto.
At the top of the ridge with the Cornón in the distance and the various other summits along Peña Sagra including Pico Paraes and nearest, el Tumbo. I continued along as far as the outcrop at 1,634 mts.

Caminar no era tarea fácil, pero sí divertido
The going got rather more complicated, but it was an enjoyable clamber up the rocks

Después me di la vuelta y me dirigí hacia La Mesa con su repetidor y "los pozucos". A su izquierda se ve el Cascuerres (o Busnedo)
I turned back there and headed towards La Mesa with its antenna and a couple of pools. To the left lies Cascuerres.

Caminé hasta Cascuerres, donde hice una parada para almorzar, mirando hacia Peña Sagra

y ya que me sobraba tiempo decidí visitar la Braña de los Tejos al otro lado del collado. Una mirada atrás a la pista que acababa de bajar, con Cascuerres en primer plano, detrás La Mesa y luego el Tumbo a la derecha. Hace unos 20 años recuerdo haber desistido de subir por ella debido a la cantidad de nieve. Desde entonces siempre quería apreciar las vistas desde arriba. Ahora, además de cumplir con esa cuenta pendiente estaba conociendo la única parte de la Sierra de Peña Sagra a la que no había ido.

deciding on the way down to pay a visit to the yew trees up the hill on the other side. Here you can see the track I joined to come down, with Cascuerres on the left, La Mesa in the middle and el Tumbo on the right. I'd once started up this track about 20 years ago but had to turn back because the snow was too deep. Since then I'd always meant to see how things looked from the top. As well as getting round to it now, I was ironically visiting the only part of Peña Sagra I'd not been to before.

Y finalmente bajar otra vez por la pista a Salarzón, mirando atrás de vez en cuando al Tumbo, donde Monty y yo pasamos una tarde angustiosa en diciembre pasado.
And then back down the track to Salarzón, with the occasional look back at El Tumbo, where Monty and I spent a harrowing afternoon last December

Podía haber cogido una senda por el bosque a la izquierda de la pista, que vi poco después de pasar delante de la indicación "Salarzón-Braña de los Tejos", pero no tenía claro si bajaba directamente a San Pedro. Luego vi que efectivamente se junta con la pista justo antes de llegar a Salarzón.
I was undecided about taking a path I spotted to the left of the track just after the signpost  I mentioned before, as I wasn't sure if it led to San Pedro or not, and regretted not taking it, as it comes out onto the track just before you get to Salarzón.

Un día precioso tanto por las vistas y el tiempo soleado - se anuncia nieve para el domingo siguiente, pero se ve que ¡los paisanos están preparados para el frío!
No matter; it was a beautiful warm day spent admiring wonderful views - maybe the last such Sunday this year, as snow is forecast for the following weekend - the people who live here are prepared for the cold though!

Peña Lampa

Saliendo de Guardo (Palencia) por la P-215 dirección Riaño, a los 5 kms se coge una carretera a la izquierda que recorre la base de Peña Lampa. A los 2,6 kms hay una curva abrupta a la izquierda y allí hay espacio para dejar el coche. Un poste indica una pista hacia el NO, que lleva el caminante al Roblón de el Monasterio. Supuse que era el nombre de un pueblo...
This walk is in north-west Palencia; 5 kms north of the town of Guardo on the P-215 road turn left along an un marked road that skirts Peña Lampa mountain. You can leave your car after about 2 and a half kms just before a sharp bend to the left. A track on the other side of the road is signposted to Roblón de el Monasterio.

El trayecto es muy bonito, pesa a algún resto de la industria de la zona.

It's a pretty walk, notwithstanding the remains of the mining activity that took place here until recently.

Al rato la pista se separa de la senda balizada, pero seguí la senda por el bosque y a los 5 minutos me encontré con el destino: un roble centenario...
Where a marked path goes straight on up into the wood,  leaving the track at a bend that swings round to the right,  I followed it to check out the area. 5 minutes later I came to the "Roblón": an old oak tree.

La pista acaba en un cercado de ganado y después de cruzarlo seguí un sendero que sube hacia la izquierda entre el matorral. Donde lo veía más fácil, avanzaba por las rocas hasta alcanzar el sendero y por intuición llegué a campo más abierto. Un par de hitos me animaban a seguir subiendo y me encontré en la base de Peña Lampa. Ya tenía un anticipo hacia el norte de las vistas que disfrutaría más tarde:
The track comes to an end at a cattle enclosure. Coming out the other side I turned left up a path through the bushes. Occasionally it was easier to make headway clambering over the rocks before picking up a path again. A couple of cairns encouraged me to keep going up the hill and I soon got to the foot of the mountain. The view I had in front of me was an aperitif of what would appear a bit later:

It was an enjoyable descent, though you have to watch out for the loose stones. To begin with I kept in line with the precipice to the left

but as the going started to get less straightforward I headed diagonally to the right

El camino de vuelta al coche me daba la oportunidad de ver de cerca los edificios abandonados de la empresa de minería de antracita que dejó de funcionar hace pocos años. El carbón invade la carretera y forma un contraste con la caliza blanca de la parte exterior de la montaña
The walk back to the car took me past disused anthracite mine-workings. The coal covers the road in some places and makes for a contrast with the white limestone surface of the mountainside

Mi plan había sido subir a Peña Mayor también, pero ya hacía más calor que la prevista y quité las botas. Camino a casa hice una parada en Aguilar para explorar unos rincones que no conocía: la presa (bonito el embalse), el castillo (la primera vez que veo graffitis en las ruinas de un castillo)...
I hadn't planned to curtail the walking there, but the temperature was now high enough for me to call it a day. I did though stop off in the town of Aguilar de Campoo on the way back, and had a mooch round parts of it I'd seen before driving past but never up close, like the dam and reservoir and the castle ruins (the former winning hands down).

Mes y medio después de subir los Tiro Navarro, volvimos a la misma zona. Había mucho menos nieve y muchos más montañeros. Al salir de la Canalona cogimos el sendero que se dirige hacia la cabeza del valle de las Moñetas. Al fondo distinguimos Pico Boru y Cueto Tejado (centro-derecha de la imagen), escenario de mi última salida.

We returned to the part of central Picos we were in a month and a half ago to climb Tiro Navarro. There was a lot less snow now, but lots of mountaineers eager to make the most of the good weather. The photo shows the path down from the top of the Canalona to the head of the Moñetas Valley. In the distance right of centre are the mountains we walked up last time out (Pico Boru and Cueto Tejado).

y vemos lo que en un principio pensamos que son los Campanarios, pero que resultan ser los (dos) Tiros de Santiago. Vamos hacia  el collado (izq. de la foto). El Tiro de la derecha parece sobrepasar su vecino de la izquierda por mucho más de los 9 metros que indican los mapas.
As we continue (the two) Tiros de Santiago come into view. We head to the col on the left.

Al llegar al collado vemos el Jou del Infanzón (el hoyo más alto de Picos) al otro lado. Después descubriré el significado del nombre (hidalgo)
When we get there we see on the other side the highest depression in the Picos (the Jou del Infanzón)

y un poco hacia la derecha la colladita por donde pasaremos luego para rodear los Tiros. Al fondo está la Morra

Acometemos la corta ascensión al Tiro más cercano. Al llegar a la cima se ve Curavacas a lo lejos y Peña Vieja cerca a la derecha
It's a short climb up to the nearest summit. On reaching the top we see Curavacas in the distance and Peña Vieja nearby on the right

Pero lo que más llama la atención es el segundo Tiro, justo al lado - no entra dentro de las posibilidades de un "senderista" como yo. Desde aquí lo de los 9 metros parece creíble. Pico Boru detrás a la izquierda y Prau Cortés a la derecha
But what grabs your attention the most is the peak just next door - not accessible to a mere rambler like myself. Pico Boru is behind to the left

Hacia la izquierda está La Torre del Oso y en el centro, detrás, Peña Castil. Debajo está el Hoyacón de Villasobrada por donde vimos pasar bastantes personas camino de la Collada Bonita (a la izq. de La Torre del Oso)

Una vez abajo, y desde la colladina vemos Tiros Navarro a la izquierda y La Horcada del Infanzón a la derecha. Los Campanarios están a su derecha (no se ven en la foto) pero los dejamos para otro día.

No hay sendero claro ni hitos (salvo los que pusimos nosotros)
There's no clear path or cairns (though we placed a couple on the way),

pero se bordea las peñas sin problema, destrepando un poco cerca del final pero sin dificultad
you have to climb down the rock face a few metres towards the end but nothing difficult

Al dar la vuelta volvemos a ver el collado que da paso al Jou del Infanzón
And so the col leading to the Jou del Infanzón comes into view once more
