El banco de pruebas/ A benchmark

Celebramos los últimos días del otoño astronómico con una ruta con buena asistencia.                                         A good turnout for this walk, likely to be the last of the year, and a benchmark for those to come, in more ways than one!

Hay varios caminos que se adentran en el parque natural del Saja, y la pista que forma parte del GR 71, y que seguimos hasta las brañas es el primero que recorrí, hace 30 años, poco después de establecerme en Cantabria There are several trails that help you to explore the Saja nature reserve, and this one is the first I walked up, not long after settling in Cantabria 30 years ago.

Desde la braña contemplamos el Cueto Cucón, el extremo de la Sierra de Peña Sagra.                                        From the pastures above the forest we enjoy the view of Peña Sagra sierra

Un poco más adelante, donde el PR 71 desciende a Tudanca, la vista es aun mejor

Siempre me agrada descubrir caminos nuevos y la idea de bajar a Saja por senderos que bordean la vaguada me entusiasmaba

I'm always up for getting off the beaten track, and the suggestion that we return to Saja via paths that follow the streams down the mountain gave me the chance to discover a new route

Este claro, que habíamos oteado desde arriba, nos sirvió de punto de referencia

This clearing, which we'd spied from higher up was a useful reference point

A nuestra derecha, el tono de las hayas llamaba la atención

To our right the hue of the beech trees showed that autumn beauty isn't confined to November

y cuando el sendero que buscábamos amenazaba con desaparecer topamos con este panorama precioso y la sorpresa mayúscula de este banco. Un imán que probamos todos.

and when the path we were looking for seemed to be about to disappear, we came upon this lovely perspective and the totally unexpected presence of this bench

Evidentemente, el camino no iba a presentar dificultades a partir de entonces, salvo por los disparos de unos cazadores, que intuíamos estaban en la ladera de enfrente

The walk was obviously not going to be difficult to follow from then on, except for the accompaniment of a group of hunters' rifle-shots and yelping dogs, which we assumed were on the other side of the gully

However, they finished their day's hunting with a series of gunshots only a little above where we found ourselves

Preferí sacar esta foto donde habían aparcado, en lugar de una del jabalí muerto que un setter mordía

I preferred to take this photo near the spot where they'd parked, rather than one of the dead boar that was being bitten by a setter

Quedaba una sorpresa más: al llegar a la carretera descubrí que habíamos bajado por una pista que subí brevemente hace un año cerca del Centro de Interpretación.

There was still one surprise in store: when we came out onto the road, I realised we'd been coming down a trail I walked up briefly this time last year, near the park's Visitor Centre.

El monte del Infierno/ Mount Hell

La cuarta vez que visito esta parte de la provincia este año. 

Mientras subimos al macizo de Alcomba vemos la nieblina que se levanta sobre el Asón, entre nosotros y el Pico San Vicente y la Sierra de Rozas

My fourth outing to this part of Cantabria in 2025. As we make our way up to the Sierra de Alcomba, we see the mist rising from the Asón river with Pico San Vicente and Sierra de Rozas behind

Habíamos visto esta cambera en enero y solo hoy me daría cuenta que ya había pasado por aquí hace años

We'd clocked this track earlier in the year and only later did I realise I'd come this way years ago

Enfrente ahora está la Canal de Ancillo; la Sierra de Rozas a la izquierda y el Pico del Hornijo a la derecha

Opposite us now is the Ancillo gorge, with Rozas to the left and the Pico del Hornijo to the right

Dejamos la cambera y seguimos un sendero entre las rocas

We leave the track and follow a path through rocky terrain

Entramos en una zona sombría y vemos el punto más alto de la sierra delante de nosotros : el Rubrillo, también conocido como el monte del Infierno

Moving into the shade, we see the highest point of the sierra ahead

Bordeamos un par de dolinas, disfrutando de las formas rocosas y ocasionales árboles- éste parece estar dotado de largos dedos verdes y garras 

We skirt a couple of depressions, admiring the rock formations dotted with occasional trees, this one complete with green fingers and claws

La última parte de la subida pasa por un lapiaz, donde tenemos que usar las manos para progresar

The final stage up to Mount Hell, which is one of this peak's names, is the typical karst landscape, where you need to use your hands as you negotiate the outcrops

Cerca de la cima vemos la costa y el Buciero

Near the top, the coast comes into view

Mirando hacia el lugar donde empezamos

Looking down at where we set off from

las montañas en el horizonte están en el País Vasco

the mountains on the horizon are in the Basque Country

En el centro está Peña Rocías, luego Porracolina a su derecha, y los Picos nevados a lo lejos más a la derecha

Behind us stand Peña Rocías and then Porracolina centre-right, with snowcapped Picos de Europa away in the distance to the right

Regresamos por el mismo camino - la única manera de evitar caer al infierno es ir trepando por las rocas

We return the way we came - the only way to avoid falling into hell is by making your way carefully across the rocks

Otra vez enfrente de la Canal de Ancillo, pero el hayal está bañado ahora por el sol

Back opposite the Ancillo Gorge, but with the sunlight altering the beechwood's appearance

Llegamos al coche y echamos una mirada final de despedida al macizo de la Alcomba

As we get back to the car, we take a final look at the Sierra de la Alcomba

Una excursión cortita que he disfrutado en compañía de un amigo gamense que ha podido ver su municipio desde arriba 

A short hike I was able to enjoy accompanied by a friend who finally got to look down on his village from the summit.
