El banco de pruebas/ A benchmark

Celebramos los últimos días del otoño astronómico con una ruta con buena asistencia.                                         A good turnout for this walk, likely to be the last of the year, and a benchmark for those to come, in more ways than one!

Hay varios caminos que se adentran en el parque natural del Saja, y la pista que forma parte del GR 71, y que seguimos hasta las brañas es el primero que recorrí, hace 30 años, poco después de establecerme en Cantabria There are several trails that help you to explore the Saja nature reserve, and this one is the first I walked up, not long after settling in Cantabria 30 years ago.

Desde la braña contemplamos el Cueto Cucón, el extremo de la Sierra de Peña Sagra.                                        From the pastures above the forest we enjoy the view of Peña Sagra sierra

Siempre me agrada descubrir caminos nuevos y la idea de bajar a Saja por senderos que bordean la vaguada me entusiasmaba

I'm always up for getting off the beaten track, and the suggestion that we return to Saja via paths that follow the streams down the mountain gave me the chance to discover a new route

Este claro, que habíamos oteado desde arriba, nos sirvió de punto de referencia

This clearing, which we'd spied from higher up was a useful reference point

A nuestra derecha, el tono de las hayas llamaba la atención

To our right the hue of the beech trees showed that autumn beauty isn't confined to November

y cuando el sendero que buscábamos amenazaba con desaparecer topamos con este panorama precioso y la sorpresa mayúscula de este banco. Un imán que probamos todos.

and when the path we were looking for seemed to be about to disappear, we came upon this lovely perspective and the totally unexpected presence of this bench

Evidentemente, el camino no iba a presentar dificultades a partir de entonces, salvo por los disparos de unos cazadores, que intuíamos estaban en la ladera de enfrente

The walk was obviously not going to be difficult to follow from then on, except for the accompaniment of a group of hunters' rifle-shots and yelping dogs, which we assumed were on the other side of the gully

However, they finished their day's hunting with a series of gunshots only a little above where we found ourselves

Preferí sacar esta foto donde habían aparcado, en lugar de una del jabalí muerto que un setter mordía

I preferred to take this photo near the spot where they'd parked, rather than one of the dead boar that was being bitten by a setter

Quedaba una sorpresa más: al llegar a la carretera descubrí que habíamos bajado por una pista que subí brevemente hace un año cerca del Centro de Interpretación.

There was still one surprise in store: when we came out onto the road, I realised we'd been coming down a trail I walked up briefly this time last year, near the park's Visitor Centre.
